Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜sekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajāneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜asekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajāneyyāā€ti? ā€œMendicants, is there a way that a mendicant who is a trainee, standing at the level of a trainee, can understand that they are a trainee? And that a mendicant who is an adept, standing at the level of an adept, can understand that they are an adept?ā€

ā€œBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā€¦ā€

ā€œatthi, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜sekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajāneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜asekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajāneyya. ā€œThere is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee, standing at the level of a trainee, can understand that they are a trainee, and that a mendicant who is an adept, standing at the level of an adept, can understand that they are an adept.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜sekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti? And what is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee?

Idha, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānātiā€”Itā€™s when a mendicant who is a trainee truly understands: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜sekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. This is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu iti paį¹isaƱcikkhati: Furthermore, a mendicant who is a trainee reflects:

ā€˜atthi nu kho ito bahiddhā aƱƱo samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā yo evaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ tathaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti yathā bhagavāā€™ti? ā€˜Is there any other ascetic or brahmin elsewhere whose teaching is as true, as real, as accurate as that of the Buddha?ā€™

So evaį¹ pajānāti: They understand:

ā€˜natthi kho ito bahiddhā aƱƱo samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā yo evaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ tathaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti yathā bhagavāā€™ti. ā€˜There is no other ascetic or brahmin elsewhere whose teaching is as true, as real, as accurate as that of the Buddha.ā€™

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜sekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. This too is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee.

saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samādhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

Yaį¹…gatikāni yaį¹paramāni yaį¹phalāni yaį¹pariyosānāni. Na heva kho kāyena phusitvā viharati; And although they donā€™t have direct meditative experience of their destination, apex, fruit, and culmination,

paƱƱāya ca ativijjha passati. they do see them with penetrating wisdom.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜asekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti? And what is the way that a mendicant who is an adept can understand that they are an adept?

Idha, bhikkhave, asekho bhikkhu paƱcindriyāni pajānātiā€”Itā€™s when a mendicant who is an adept understands the five faculties:

saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samādhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

Yaį¹…gatikāni yaį¹paramāni yaį¹phalāni yaį¹pariyosānāni. Kāyena ca phusitvā viharati; They have direct meditative experience of their destination, apex, fruit, and culmination,

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜asekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. This is a way that a mendicant who is an adept can understand that they are an adept.

They understand: ā€˜These six faculties will totally and utterly cease without anything left over. And no other six faculties will arise anywhere anyhow.ā€™

Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyāyo yaį¹ pariyāyaį¹ āgamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito ā€˜asekhosmÄ«ā€™ti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. This too is a way that a mendicant who is an adept can understand that they are an adept.ā€
