Sekhasutta A Trainee
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
āatthi nu kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āasekhosmÄ«āti pajÄneyyÄāti? āMendicants, is there a way that a mendicant who is a trainee, standing at the level of a trainee, can understand that they are a trainee? And that a mendicant who is an adept, standing at the level of an adept, can understand that they are an adept?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ ā¦peā¦ āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā¦ā
āatthi, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄneyya, asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āasekhosmÄ«āti pajÄneyya. āThere is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee, standing at the level of a trainee, can understand that they are a trainee, and that a mendicant who is an adept, standing at the level of an adept, can understand that they are an adept.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti? And what is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee?
Idha, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnÄtiāItās when a mendicant who is a trainee truly understands: āThis is sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the origin of sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the cessation of sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā.
ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti. This is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu iti paį¹isaƱcikkhati: Furthermore, a mendicant who is a trainee reflects:
āatthi nu kho ito bahiddhÄ aƱƱo samaį¹o vÄ brÄhmaį¹o vÄ yo evaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ tathaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti yathÄ bhagavÄāti? āIs there any other ascetic or brahmin elsewhere whose teaching is as true, as real, as accurate as that of the Buddha?ā
So evaį¹ pajÄnÄti: They understand:
ānatthi kho ito bahiddhÄ aƱƱo samaį¹o vÄ brÄhmaį¹o vÄ yo evaį¹ bhÅ«taį¹ tacchaį¹ tathaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti yathÄ bhagavÄāti. āThere is no other ascetic or brahmin elsewhere whose teaching is as true, as real, as accurate as that of the Buddha.ā
Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti. This too is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu paƱcindriyÄni pajÄnÄtiāFurthermore, a mendicant who is a trainee understands the five faculties:
saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samÄdhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

gatikÄni yaį¹paramÄni yaį¹phalÄni yaį¹pariyosÄnÄni. Na heva kho kÄyena phusitvÄ viharati; And although they donāt have direct meditative experience of their destination, apex, fruit, and culmination,
paƱƱÄya ca ativijjha passati. they do see them with penetrating wisdom.
Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma sekho bhikkhu sekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āsekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti. This too is a way that a mendicant who is a trainee can understand that they are a trainee.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āasekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti? And what is the way that a mendicant who is an adept can understand that they are an adept?
Idha, bhikkhave, asekho bhikkhu paƱcindriyÄni pajÄnÄtiāItās when a mendicant who is an adept understands the five faculties:
saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samÄdhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

gatikÄni yaį¹paramÄni yaį¹phalÄni yaį¹pariyosÄnÄni. KÄyena ca phusitvÄ viharati; They have direct meditative experience of their destination, apex, fruit, and culmination,

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, asekho bhikkhu cha indriyÄni pajÄnÄti. Furthermore, a mendicant who is an adept understands the six faculties:
āCakkhundriyaį¹, sotindriyaį¹, ghÄnindriyaį¹, jivhindriyaį¹, kÄyindriyaį¹, manindriyaį¹āeye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.
imÄni kho cha indriyÄni sabbena sabbaį¹ sabbathÄ sabbaį¹ aparisesaį¹ nirujjhissanti, aƱƱÄni ca cha indriyÄni na kuhiƱci kismiƱci uppajjissantÄ«āti pajÄnÄti. They understand: āThese six faculties will totally and utterly cease without anything left over. And no other six faculties will arise anywhere anyhow.ā
Ayampi kho, bhikkhave, pariyÄyo yaį¹ pariyÄyaį¹ Ägamma asekho bhikkhu asekhabhÅ«miyaį¹ į¹hito āasekhosmÄ«āti pajÄnÄtÄ«āti. This too is a way that a mendicant who is an adept can understand that they are an adept.ā
