ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci balakaraį¹‡Ä«yā kammantā kayiranti, sabbe te pathaviį¹ nissāya pathaviyaį¹ patiį¹­į¹­hāya evamete balakaraį¹‡Ä«yā kammantā kayiranti; ā€œMendicants, all the hard work that gets done depends on the earth and is grounded on the earth.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«laį¹ nissāya sÄ«le patiį¹­į¹­hāya cattāro sammappadhāne bhāveti, cattāro sammappadhāne bahulÄ«karoti. In the same way, a mendicant develops and cultivates the four right efforts depending on and grounded on ethics.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«laį¹ nissāya sÄ«le patiį¹­į¹­hāya cattāro sammappadhāne bhāveti, cattāro sammappadhāne bahulÄ«karoti? How so?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ pāpakānaį¹ akusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ anuppādāya chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati ā€¦peā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise. ā€¦

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sÄ«laį¹ nissāya sÄ«le patiį¹­į¹­hāya cattāro sammappadhāne bhāveti, cattāro sammappadhāne bahulÄ«karotÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant develops and cultivates the four right efforts depending on and grounded on ethics.ā€
