Esanādisuttadasaka Ten Discourses on Searches, Etc.

ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. ā€œMendicants, there are these three searches.

Katamā tisso? What three?

Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanāā€”The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path.

imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā. These are the three searches.

Imāsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ esanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā. The four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three searches.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Itā€™s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donā€™t arise. ā€¦

uppannānaį¹ kusalānaį¹ dhammānaį¹ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaį¹ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ ārabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹‡hāti padahati. so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.

Imāsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ esanānaį¹ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbāā€ti. These four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three searches.ā€
