āPaƱcimÄni, bhikkhave, uddhambhÄgiyÄni saį¹yojanÄni. āMendicants, there are five higher fetters.
KatamÄni paƱca? What five?
RÅ«parÄgo, arÅ«parÄgo, mÄno, uddhaccaį¹, avijjÄāDesire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance.
imÄni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhÄgiyÄni saį¹yojanÄni. These are the five higher fetters.
Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ abhiƱƱÄya pariƱƱÄya parikkhayÄya pahÄnÄya cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄ. The four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannÄnaį¹ ā¦peā¦ Itās when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise. ā¦
uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati. so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.
Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ uddhambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ abhiƱƱÄya pariƱƱÄya parikkhayÄya pahÄnÄya ime cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄāti. These four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā
