ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, balāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five powers.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Saddhābalaį¹, vÄ«riyabalaį¹, satibalaį¹, samādhibalaį¹, paƱƱābalaį¹ā€”The powers of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱca balānīti. These are the five powers.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gaį¹…gā nadÄ« pācÄ«naninnā pācÄ«napoį¹‡Ä pācÄ«napabbhārā; The Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱca balāni bhāvento paƱca balāni bahulÄ«karonto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoį¹‡o nibbānapabbhāro. In the same way, a mendicant who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱca balāni bhāvento paƱca balāni bahulÄ«karonto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoį¹‡o nibbānapabbhāro? And how does a mendicant who develops the five powers slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddhābalaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹, Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the powers of faith,

vÄ«riyabalaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ energy,

satibalaį¹ ā€¦ mindfulness,

samādhibalaį¹ ā€¦ immersion,

paƱƱābalaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. and wisdom, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu paƱca balāni bhāvento paƱca balāni bahulÄ«karonto nibbānaninno hoti nibbānapoį¹‡o nibbānapabbhāroā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant who develops and cultivates the five powers slants, slopes, and inclines to extinguishment.ā€

Dvādasamaį¹.

Gaį¹…gāpeyyālavaggo paį¹­hamo.

Tassuddānaį¹

Cha pācīnato ninnā, Six on slanting to the east,

cha ninnā ca samuddato; and six on slanting to the ocean;

Dvete cha dvādasa honti, these two sixes make twelve,

vaggo tena pavuccatÄ«ti. and thatā€™s how this chapter is recited.
