Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œPubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ā€œMendicants, before my awakeningā€”when I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningā€”I thought:

ā€˜ko nu kho hetu, ko paccayo iddhipādabhāvanāyāā€™ti? ā€˜Whatā€™s the cause, whatā€™s the reason for the development of the bases of psychic power?ā€™

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me:

ā€˜idha bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāvetiā€”ā€˜Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm, and active effort.

iti me chando na ca atilÄ«no bhavissati, na ca atippaggahito bhavissati, na ca ajjhattaį¹ saį¹…khitto bhavissati, na ca bahiddhā vikkhitto bhavissati. They think: ā€œMy enthusiasm wonā€™t be too lax or too tense. And itā€™ll be neither constricted internally nor scattered externally.ā€

PacchāpuresaƱƱī ca viharatiā€”And they meditate perceiving before and behind:

yathā pure tathā pacchā, yathā pacchā tathā pure; as before, so behind; as behind, so before;

yathā adho tathā uddhaį¹, yathā uddhaį¹ tathā adho; as below, so above; as above, so below;

yathā divā tathā rattiį¹, yathā rattiį¹ tathā divā. as by day, so by night; as by night, so by day.

Iti vivaį¹­ena cetasā apariyonaddhena sappabhāsaį¹ cittaį¹ bhāvetiā€™. And so, with an open and unenveloped heart, they develop a mind thatā€™s full of radiance.

VÄ«riyasamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāvetiā€”They develop the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to energy ā€¦

Cittasamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāvetiā€”mental development ā€¦

Evaį¹ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catÅ«su iddhipādesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu, anekavihitaį¹ iddhividhaį¹ paccanubhotiā€”ekopi hutvā bahudhā hoti, bahudhāpi hutvā eko hoti; āvibhāvaį¹, tirobhāvaį¹; tirokuį¹­į¹­aį¹ tiropākāraį¹ tiropabbataį¹ asajjamāno gacchati, seyyathāpi ākāse; pathaviyāpi ummujjanimujjaį¹ karoti, seyyathāpi udake; udakepi abhijjamāne gacchati, seyyathāpi pathaviyaį¹; ākāsepi pallaį¹…kena kamati, seyyathāpi pakkhÄ« sakuį¹‡o; imepi candimasÅ«riye evaį¹mahiddhike evaį¹mahānubhāve pāį¹‡inā parimasati parimajjati; yāva brahmalokāpi kāyena vasaį¹ vatteti. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unobstructed through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling the body as far as the realm of divinity.

Evaį¹ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catÅ«su iddhipādesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu dibbāya sotadhātuyā visuddhāya atikkantamānusikāya ubho sadde suį¹‡Ätiā€”dibbe ca mānuse ca, dÅ«re santike cāti. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they hear both kinds of sounds, human and heavenly, whether near or far.

Evaį¹ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catÅ«su iddhipādesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu, parasattānaį¹ parapuggalānaį¹ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāti. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind.

Sarāgaį¹ vā cittaį¹ ā€˜sarāgaį¹ cittanā€™ti pajānāti; They understand mind with greed as ā€˜mind with greedā€™,

vÄ«tarāgaį¹ vā cittaį¹ ā€˜vÄ«tarāgaį¹ cittanā€™ti pajānāti; and mind without greed as ā€˜mind without greedā€™.

sadosaį¹ vā cittaį¹ ā€˜sadosaį¹ cittanā€™ti pajānāti; They understand mind with hate ā€¦

vÄ«tadosaį¹ vā cittaį¹ ā€˜vÄ«tadosaį¹ cittanā€™ti pajānāti; mind without hate ā€¦

Iti sākāraį¹ sauddesaį¹ anekavihitaį¹ pubbenivāsaį¹ anussarati. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they recollect many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. They remember: ā€˜There, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn somewhere else. There, too, I was named this, my clan was that, I looked like this, and that was my food. This was how I felt pleasure and pain, and that was how my life ended. When I passed away from that place I was reborn here.ā€™ And so they recollect their many kinds of past lives, with features and details.

Evaį¹ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catÅ«su iddhipādesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti: ā€˜ime vata, bhonto, sattā kāyaduccaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«duccaritena samannāgatā manoduccaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ upavādakā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikā micchādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannā. Ime vā pana, bhonto, sattā kāyasucaritena samannāgatā vacÄ«sucaritena samannāgatā manosucaritena samannāgatā ariyānaį¹ anupavādakā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikā sammādiį¹­į¹­hikammasamādānā; te kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapannāā€™ti. Iti dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena satte passati cavamāne upapajjamāne hÄ«ne paį¹‡Ä«te, suvaį¹‡į¹‡e dubbaį¹‡į¹‡e, sugate duggate yathākammÅ«page satte pajānāti. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds. ā€˜These dear beings did bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. They denounced the noble ones; they had wrong view; and they chose to act out of that wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These dear beings, however, did good things by way of body, speech, and mind. They never denounced the noble ones; they had right view; and they chose to act out of that right view. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā€™ And so, with clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, they see sentient beings passing away and being rebornā€”inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, in a good place or a bad place. They understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.

Evaį¹ bhāvitesu kho, bhikkhu, catÅ«su iddhipādesu evaį¹ bahulÄ«katesu, āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€ti. When the four bases of psychic power have been developed and cultivated in this way, they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.ā€
