Uį¹‡į¹‡Äbhabrāhmaį¹‡asutta The Brahmin Uį¹‡į¹‡Äbha

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaā€™s Monastery.

Atha kho uį¹‡į¹‡Äbho brāhmaį¹‡o yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Uį¹‡į¹‡Äbha the brahmin went up to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho uį¹‡į¹‡Äbho brāhmaį¹‡o āyasmantaį¹ ānandaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him,

ā€œkimatthiyaį¹ nu kho, bho ānanda, samaį¹‡e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWorthy Ānanda, whatā€™s the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā€

ā€œChandappahānatthaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha, brahmin, is to give up desire.ā€

ā€œAtthi pana, bho ānanda, maggo atthi paį¹­ipadā etassa chandassa pahānāyāā€ti? ā€œBut is there a path and a practice for giving up that desire?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, maggo, atthi paį¹­ipadā etassa chandassa pahānāyāā€ti. ā€œThere is.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bho ānanda, maggo katamā paį¹­ipadā etassa chandassa pahānāyāā€ti? ā€œWhat is that path?ā€

ā€œIdha, brāhmaį¹‡a, bhikkhu chandasamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāveti, ā€œItā€™s when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm ā€¦

vÄ«riyasamādhi ā€¦peā€¦ energy ā€¦

cittasamādhi ā€¦ mental development ā€¦

vÄ«maį¹sāsamādhippadhānasaį¹…khārasamannāgataį¹ iddhipādaį¹ bhāvetiā€”inquiry, and active effort.

ayaį¹ kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹­ipadā etassa chandassa pahānāyāā€ti. This is the path and the practice for giving up that desire.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹ sante, bho ānanda, santakaį¹ hoti no asantakaį¹. ā€œThis being the case, worthy Ānanda, the path is endless, not finite.

Chandeneva chandaį¹ pajahissatÄ«tiā€”netaį¹ į¹­hānaį¹ vijjatiā€. For itā€™s not possible to give up desire by means of desire.ā€

ā€œTena hi, brāhmaį¹‡a, taƱƱevettha paį¹­ipucchissāmi. Yathā te khameyya tathā taį¹ byākareyyāsi. ā€œWell then, brahmin, Iā€™ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

ahosi te pubbe chando ā€˜Ärāmaį¹ gamissāmÄ«ā€™ti? Have you ever had a desire to walk to the park,

Tassa te ārāmagatassa yo tajjo chando so paį¹­ippassaddhoā€ti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding desire faded away?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œAhosi te pubbe vÄ«riyaį¹ ā€˜Ärāmaį¹ gamissāmÄ«ā€™ti? ā€œHave you ever had the energy to walk to the park,

Tassa te ārāmagatassa yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ taį¹ paį¹­ippassaddhanā€ti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding energy faded away?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œAhosi te pubbe cittaį¹ ā€˜Ärāmaį¹ gamissāmÄ«ā€™ti? ā€œHave you ever had the idea to walk to the park,

Tassa te ārāmagatassa yaį¹ tajjaį¹ cittaį¹ taį¹ paį¹­ippassaddhanā€ti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding idea faded away?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œAhosi te pubbe vÄ«maį¹sā ā€˜Ärāmaį¹ gamissāmÄ«ā€™ti? ā€œHave you ever inquired regarding a walk to the park,

Tassa te ārāmagatassa yā tajjā vÄ«maį¹sā sā paį¹­ippassaddhāā€ti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding inquiry faded away?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhoā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, yo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹‡Äsavo vusitavā katakaraį¹‡Ä«yo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹‡abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱāvimutto, tassa yo pubbe chando ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yo tajjo chando so paį¹­ippassaddho; ā€œIn the same way, take a mendicant who is perfectedā€”with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment. They formerly had the desire to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding desire faded away.

yaį¹ pubbe vÄ«riyaį¹ ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ taį¹ paį¹­ippassaddhaį¹; They formerly had the energy to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding energy faded away.

yaį¹ pubbe cittaį¹ ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yaį¹ tajjaį¹ cittaį¹ taį¹ paį¹­ippassaddhaį¹; They formerly had the idea to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding idea faded away.

yā pubbe vÄ«maį¹sā ahosi arahattappattiyā, arahattappatte yā tajjā vÄ«maį¹sā sā paį¹­ippassaddhā. They formerly inquired regarding attaining perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding inquiry faded away.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brāhmaį¹‡a, What do you think, brahmin?

iti evaį¹ sante, santakaį¹ vā hoti no asantakaį¹ vāā€ti? This being the case, is the path endless or finite?ā€

ā€œAddhā, bho ānanda, evaį¹ sante, santakaį¹ hoti no asantakaį¹. ā€œClearly, worthy Ānanda, this being the case, the path is finite, not endless.

Abhikkantaį¹, bho ānanda, abhikkantaį¹, bho ānanda. Excellent, worthy Ānanda! Excellent!

Seyyathāpi, bho ānanda, nikkujjitaį¹ vā ukkujjeyya, paį¹­icchannaį¹ vā vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vā maggaį¹ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaį¹ dhāreyya: ā€˜cakkhumanto rÅ«pāni dakkhantÄ«ā€™ti; evamevaį¹ bhotā ānandena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatā€™s there, the worthy Ānanda has made the teaching clear in many ways.

Esāhaį¹, bho ānanda, taį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gacchāmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹…ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹…gha.

Upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ ānando dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Ānanda remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
