Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ Änando kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time Venerable Änanda was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Atha kho uį¹į¹Äbho brÄhmaį¹o yenÄyasmÄ Änando tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ Änandena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Uį¹į¹Äbha the brahmin went up to Venerable Änanda, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho uį¹į¹Äbho brÄhmaį¹o Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him,
ākimatthiyaį¹ nu kho, bho Änanda, samaį¹e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti? āWorthy Änanda, whatās the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā
āChandappahÄnatthaį¹ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. āThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha, brahmin, is to give up desire.ā
āAtthi pana, bho Änanda, maggo atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa chandassa pahÄnÄyÄāti? āBut is there a path and a practice for giving up that desire?ā
āAtthi kho, brÄhmaį¹a, maggo, atthi paį¹ipadÄ etassa chandassa pahÄnÄyÄāti. āThere is.ā
āKatamo pana, bho Änanda, maggo katamÄ paį¹ipadÄ etassa chandassa pahÄnÄyÄāti? āWhat is that path?ā
āIdha, brÄhmaį¹a, bhikkhu chandasamÄdhippadhÄnasaį¹
khÄrasamannÄgataį¹ iddhipÄdaį¹ bhÄveti, āItās when a mendicant develops the basis of psychic power that has immersion due to enthusiasm ā¦
vÄ«riyasamÄdhi ā¦peā¦ energy ā¦
cittasamÄdhi ā¦ mental development ā¦
vÄ«maį¹sÄsamÄdhippadhÄnasaį¹
khÄrasamannÄgataį¹ iddhipÄdaį¹ bhÄvetiāinquiry, and active effort.
ayaį¹ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, maggo ayaį¹ paį¹ipadÄ etassa chandassa pahÄnÄyÄāti. This is the path and the practice for giving up that desire.ā
āEvaį¹ sante, bho Änanda, santakaį¹ hoti no asantakaį¹. āThis being the case, worthy Änanda, the path is endless, not finite.
Chandeneva chandaį¹ pajahissatÄ«tiānetaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjatiā. For itās not possible to give up desire by means of desire.ā
āTena hi, brÄhmaį¹a, taƱƱevettha paį¹ipucchissÄmi. YathÄ te khameyya tathÄ taį¹ byÄkareyyÄsi. āWell then, brahmin, Iāll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brÄhmaį¹a, What do you think, brahmin?
ahosi te pubbe chando āÄrÄmaį¹ gamissÄmÄ«āti? Have you ever had a desire to walk to the park,
Tassa te ÄrÄmagatassa yo tajjo chando so paį¹ippassaddhoāti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding desire faded away?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āAhosi te pubbe vÄ«riyaį¹ āÄrÄmaį¹ gamissÄmÄ«āti? āHave you ever had the energy to walk to the park,
Tassa te ÄrÄmagatassa yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ taį¹ paį¹ippassaddhanāti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding energy faded away?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āAhosi te pubbe cittaį¹ āÄrÄmaį¹ gamissÄmÄ«āti? āHave you ever had the idea to walk to the park,
Tassa te ÄrÄmagatassa yaį¹ tajjaį¹ cittaį¹ taį¹ paį¹ippassaddhanāti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding idea faded away?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āAhosi te pubbe vÄ«maį¹sÄ āÄrÄmaį¹ gamissÄmÄ«āti? āHave you ever inquired regarding a walk to the park,
Tassa te ÄrÄmagatassa yÄ tajjÄ vÄ«maį¹sÄ sÄ paį¹ippassaddhÄāti? but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding inquiry faded away?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āEvameva kho, brÄhmaį¹a, yo so bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo vusitavÄ katakaraį¹Ä«yo ohitabhÄro anuppattasadattho parikkhÄ«į¹abhavasaį¹yojano sammadaƱƱÄvimutto, tassa yo pubbe chando ahosi arahattappattiyÄ, arahattappatte yo tajjo chando so paį¹ippassaddho; āIn the same way, take a mendicant who is perfectedāwith defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment. They formerly had the desire to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding desire faded away.
yaį¹ pubbe vÄ«riyaį¹ ahosi arahattappattiyÄ, arahattappatte yaį¹ tajjaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ taį¹ paį¹ippassaddhaį¹; They formerly had the energy to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding energy faded away.
yaį¹ pubbe cittaį¹ ahosi arahattappattiyÄ, arahattappatte yaį¹ tajjaį¹ cittaį¹ taį¹ paį¹ippassaddhaį¹; They formerly had the idea to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding idea faded away.
yÄ pubbe vÄ«maį¹sÄ ahosi arahattappattiyÄ, arahattappatte yÄ tajjÄ vÄ«maį¹sÄ sÄ paį¹ippassaddhÄ. They formerly inquired regarding attaining perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding inquiry faded away.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brÄhmaį¹a, What do you think, brahmin?
iti evaį¹ sante, santakaį¹ vÄ hoti no asantakaį¹ vÄāti? This being the case, is the path endless or finite?ā
āAddhÄ, bho Änanda, evaį¹ sante, santakaį¹ hoti no asantakaį¹. āClearly, worthy Änanda, this being the case, the path is finite, not endless.
Abhikkantaį¹, bho Änanda, abhikkantaį¹, bho Änanda. Excellent, worthy Änanda! Excellent!
SeyyathÄpi, bho Änanda, nikkujjitaį¹ vÄ ukkujjeyya, paį¹icchannaį¹ vÄ vivareyya, mÅ«įø·hassa vÄ maggaį¹ Äcikkheyya, andhakÄre vÄ telapajjotaį¹ dhÄreyya: ācakkhumanto rÅ«pÄni dakkhantÄ«āti; evamevaį¹ bhotÄ Änandena anekapariyÄyena dhammo pakÄsito. As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see whatās there, the worthy Änanda has made the teaching clear in many ways.
EsÄhaį¹, bho Änanda, taį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gacchÄmi dhammaƱca bhikkhusaį¹
ghaƱca. I go for refuge to the worthy Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Saį¹
gha.
UpÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ Änando dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Änanda remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
