Sutanusutta On the Bank of the Sutanu

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā anuruddho sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati sutanutÄ«re. At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« on the bank of the Sutanu.

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhÅ« yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaį¹…kamiį¹su; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā anuruddhena saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. Then several mendicants went up to Venerable Anuruddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmantaį¹ anuruddhaį¹ etadavocuį¹: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œkatamesaį¹ āyasmā anuruddho dhammānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ pattoā€ti? ā€œWhat things has Venerable Anuruddha developed and cultivated to attain great direct knowledge?ā€

ā€œCatunnaį¹ khvāhaį¹, āvuso, satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ patto. ā€œReverends, I attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? What four?

Idhāhaį¹, āvuso, kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹; I meditate observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharāmi ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹ā€”principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

imesaį¹ khvāhaį¹, āvuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā mahābhiƱƱataį¹ patto. I attained great direct knowledge by developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

ImesaƱca panāhaį¹, āvuso, catunnaį¹ satipaį¹­į¹­hānānaį¹ bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā hÄ«naį¹ dhammaį¹ hÄ«nato abbhaƱƱāsiį¹, majjhimaį¹ dhammaį¹ majjhimato abbhaƱƱāsiį¹, paį¹‡Ä«taį¹ dhammaį¹ paį¹‡Ä«tato abbhaƱƱāsinā€ti. And it was by developing and cultivating these four kinds of mindfulness meditation that I directly knew the lower realm as lower, the middle realm as middle, and the higher realm as higher.ā€
