ā€œÄ€nāpānassati, bhikkhave, bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaį¹sā. ā€œMendicants, when mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated itā€™s very fruitful and beneficial.

Kathaį¹ bhāvitā ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaį¹sā? And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated to be very fruitful and beneficial?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Itā€™s when a mendicantā€”gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutā€”sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati ā€¦peā€¦ Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

Evaį¹ bhāvitā kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati evaį¹ bahulÄ«katā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaį¹sā. Mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated in this way, is very fruitful and beneficial.

Evaį¹ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaį¹ bahulÄ«katāya satta phalā sattānisaį¹sā pāį¹­ikaį¹…khā. When mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect seven fruits and benefits.

Katame satta phalā sattānisaį¹sā? What seven?

Diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme paį¹­ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ārādheti; You attain enlightenment early on in this very life.

no ce diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme paį¹­ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ārādheti.

Atha maraį¹‡akāle aƱƱaį¹ ārādheti; If not, you attain enlightenment at the time of death.

no ce diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme paį¹­ikacca aƱƱaį¹ ārādheti, no ce maraį¹‡akāle aƱƱaį¹ ārādheti.

Atha paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā antarāparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦ If not, with the ending of the five lower fetters youā€™re extinguished in between one life and the next ā€¦

upahaccaparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦ youā€™re extinguished upon landing ā€¦

asaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦ youā€™re extinguished without extra effort ā€¦

sasaį¹…khāraparinibbāyÄ« hoti ā€¦ youā€™re extinguished with extra effort ā€¦

uddhaį¹soto hoti akaniį¹­į¹­hagāmÄ«ā€”you head upstream, going to the Akaniį¹­į¹­ha realm ā€¦

evaį¹ bhāvitāya kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatiyā evaį¹ bahulÄ«katāya ime satta phalā sattānisaį¹sā pāį¹­ikaį¹…khāā€ti. When mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated in this way you can expect these seven fruits and benefits.ā€
