Ariį¹­į¹­hasutta With Ariį¹­į¹­ha

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Tatra kho bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ etadavoca: There the Buddha ā€¦ said:

ā€œbhāvetha no tumhe bhikkhave, ānāpānassatinā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you develop mindfulness of breathing?ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, āyasmā ariį¹­į¹­ho bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Ariį¹­į¹­ha said to him:

ā€œahaį¹ kho, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatinā€ti. ā€œSir, I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, ariį¹­į¹­ha, bhāvesi ānāpānassatinā€ti? ā€œBut mendicant, how do you develop it?ā€

ā€œAtÄ«tesu me, bhante, kāmesu kāmacchando pahÄ«no, anāgatesu me kāmesu kāmacchando vigato, ajjhattabahiddhā ca me dhammesu paį¹­ighasaƱƱā suppaį¹­ivinÄ«tā. ā€œSir, Iā€™ve given up desire for sensual pleasures of the past. Iā€™m rid of desire for sensual pleasures of the future. And I have eliminated perception of repulsion regarding phenomena internally and externally.

So satova assasissāmi, satova passasissāmi. Just mindful, I will breathe in. Mindful, I will breathe out.

Evaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhāvemi ānāpānassatinā€ti. Thatā€™s how I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā€

ā€œā€˜Atthesā, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati, nesā natthÄ«ā€™ti vadāmi. ā€œThat is mindfulness of breathing, Ariį¹­į¹­ha; I donā€™t deny it.

Api ca, ariį¹­į¹­ha, yathā ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuį¹‡į¹‡Ä hoti But as to how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail,

taį¹ suį¹‡Ähi, sādhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho āyasmā ariį¹­į¹­ho bhagavato paccassosi. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Ariį¹­į¹­ha replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKathaƱca, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuį¹‡į¹‡Ä hoti? ā€œAnd how is mindfulness of breathing fulfilled in detail?

Idha, ariį¹­į¹­ha, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Itā€™s when a mendicantā€”gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutā€”sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

DÄ«ghaį¹ vā assasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ assasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ Breathing in heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing in heavily.ā€™ Breathing out heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing out heavily.ā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

Evaį¹ kho, ariį¹­į¹­ha, ānāpānassati vitthārena paripuį¹‡į¹‡Ä hotÄ«ā€ti. This is how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail.ā€
