Ariį¹į¹hasutta With Ariį¹į¹ha

Tatra kho bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ etadavoca: There the Buddha ā¦ said:
ābhÄvetha no tumhe bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatināti? āMendicants, do you develop mindfulness of breathing?ā
Evaį¹ vutte, ÄyasmÄ ariį¹į¹ho bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Ariį¹į¹ha said to him:
āahaį¹ kho, bhante, bhÄvemi ÄnÄpÄnassatināti. āSir, I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā
āYathÄ kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, ariį¹į¹ha, bhÄvesi ÄnÄpÄnassatināti? āBut mendicant, how do you develop it?ā
āAtÄ«tesu me, bhante, kÄmesu kÄmacchando pahÄ«no, anÄgatesu me kÄmesu kÄmacchando vigato, ajjhattabahiddhÄ ca me dhammesu paį¹ighasaĆ±Ć±Ä suppaį¹ivinÄ«tÄ. āSir, Iāve given up desire for sensual pleasures of the past. Iām rid of desire for sensual pleasures of the future. And I have eliminated perception of repulsion regarding phenomena internally and externally.
So satova assasissÄmi, satova passasissÄmi. Just mindful, I will breathe in. Mindful, I will breathe out.
Evaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhÄvemi ÄnÄpÄnassatināti. Thatās how I develop mindfulness of breathing.ā
āāAtthesÄ, ariį¹į¹ha, ÄnÄpÄnassati, nesÄ natthÄ«āti vadÄmi. āThat is mindfulness of breathing, Ariį¹į¹ha; I donāt deny it.
Api ca, ariį¹į¹ha, yathÄ ÄnÄpÄnassati vitthÄrena paripuį¹į¹Ä hoti But as to how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail,
taį¹ suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho ÄyasmÄ ariį¹į¹ho bhagavato paccassosi. āYes, sir,ā Ariį¹į¹ha replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āKathaƱca, ariį¹į¹ha, ÄnÄpÄnassati vitthÄrena paripuį¹į¹Ä hoti? āAnd how is mindfulness of breathing fulfilled in detail?
Idha, ariį¹į¹ha, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vÄ rukkhamÅ«lagato vÄ suƱƱÄgÄragato vÄ nisÄ«dati pallaį¹
kaį¹ ÄbhujitvÄ ujuį¹ kÄyaį¹ paį¹idhÄya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hapetvÄ. Itās when a mendicantāgone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutāsits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.
So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.
DÄ«ghaį¹ vÄ assasanto ādÄ«ghaį¹ assasÄmÄ«āti pajÄnÄti ā¦peā¦ Breathing in heavily they know: āIām breathing in heavily.ā Breathing out heavily they know: āIām breathing out heavily.ā ā¦
āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati. They practice like this: āIāll breathe in observing letting go.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out observing letting go.ā
Evaį¹ kho, ariį¹į¹ha, ÄnÄpÄnassati vitthÄrena paripuį¹į¹Ä hotÄ«āti. This is how mindfulness of breathing is fulfilled in detail.ā
