Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahākappino bhagavato avidÅ«re nisinno hoti pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Now at that time Venerable Mahākappina was sitting not far from the Buddha, cross-legged, his body set straight, and mindfulness established in his presence.

Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ mahākappinaį¹ avidÅ«re nisinnaį¹ pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. The Buddha saw him,

Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi: and addressed the mendicants:

ā€œPassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etassa bhikkhuno kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā phanditattaį¹ vāā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you see any disturbance or trembling in that mendicantā€™s body?ā€

ā€œYadāpi mayaį¹, bhante, taį¹ āyasmantaį¹ passāma saį¹…ghamajjhe vā nisinnaį¹ ekaį¹ vā raho nisinnaį¹, tadāpi mayaį¹ tassa āyasmato na passāma kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā phanditattaį¹ vāā€ti. ā€œSir, whenever we see that mendicant meditatingā€”whether in the middle of the Saį¹…gha or alone in privateā€”we never see any disturbance or trembling in his body.ā€

ā€œYassa, bhikkhave, samādhissa bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā neva kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, na cittassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, tassa so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samādhissa nikāmalābhÄ« akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«. ā€œMendicants, when an immersion has been developed and cultivated thereā€™s no disturbance or trembling of the body or mind. That mendicant gets such immersion when he wants, without trouble or difficulty.

Katamassa ca, bhikkhave, samādhissa bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā neva kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, na cittassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā? And what is that immersion?

Ānāpānassatisamādhissa, bhikkhave, bhāvitattā bahulÄ«katattā neva kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, na cittassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā. When immersion due to mindfulness of breathing has been developed and cultivated thereā€™s no disturbance or trembling of the body or mind.

Kathaį¹ bhāvite ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhimhi kathaį¹ bahulÄ«kate neva kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, na cittassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā? And how is immersion due to mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated in such a way?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Itā€™s when a mendicantā€”gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutā€”sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati ā€¦peā€¦ Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out. ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

Evaį¹ bhāvite ca kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhimhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kate neva kāyassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vā, na cittassa iƱjitattaį¹ vā hoti phanditattaį¹ vāā€ti. Thatā€™s how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated so that thereā€™s no disturbance or trembling of the body or mind.ā€
