ā€œÄ€nāpānassatisamādhi, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulÄ«kato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaį¹so. ā€œMendicants, when immersion due to mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated itā€™s very fruitful and beneficial.

Kathaį¹ bhāvito ca, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaį¹ bahulÄ«kato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaį¹so? How so?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Itā€™s when a mendicantā€”gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutā€”sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

DÄ«ghaį¹ vā assasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ assasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ Breathing in heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing in heavily.ā€™ Breathing out heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing out heavily.ā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

Evaį¹ bhāvito kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kato mahapphalo hoti mahānisaį¹so. Thatā€™s how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, is very fruitful and beneficial.

Ahampi sudaį¹, bhikkhave, pubbeva sambodhā anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samāno iminā vihārena bahulaį¹ viharāmi. Before my awakeningā€”when I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningā€”I too usually practiced this kind of meditation.

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, iminā vihārena bahulaį¹ viharato neva kāyo kilamati na cakkhÅ«ni; And while I was usually practicing this kind of meditation neither my body nor my eyes became fatigued.

anupādāya ca me āsavehi cittaį¹ vimucci. And my mind was freed from defilements by not grasping.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜neva me kāyo kilameyya na cakkhÅ«ni, anupādāya ca me āsavehi cittaį¹ vimucceyyāā€™ti, ā€˜May neither my body nor my eyes became fatigued. And may my mind be freed from the defilements by not grasping.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜ye me gehasitā sarasaį¹…kappā te pahÄ«yeyyunā€™ti, ā€˜May I give up memories and thoughts tied to domestic life.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜appaį¹­ikÅ«le paį¹­ikÅ«lasaƱƱī vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜May I meditate perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜paį¹­ikÅ«le appaį¹­ikÅ«lasaƱƱī vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜May I meditate perceiving the unrepulsive in the repulsive.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜appaį¹­ikÅ«laƱca paį¹­ikÅ«laƱca tadubhayaį¹ abhinivajjetvā upekkhako vihareyyaį¹ sato sampajānoā€™ti, ā€˜May I meditate staying equanimous, mindful and aware, rejecting both the repulsive and the unrepulsive.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaį¹ savicāraį¹ vivekajaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, may I enter and remain in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜vitakkavicārānaį¹ vÅ«pasamā ajjhattaį¹ sampasādanaį¹ cetaso ekodibhāvaį¹ avitakkaį¹ avicāraį¹ samādhijaį¹ pÄ«tisukhaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, may I enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜pÄ«tiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca vihareyyaį¹ sato ca sampajāno, sukhaƱca kāyena paį¹­isaį¹vedeyyaį¹, yaį¹ taį¹ ariyā ācikkhantiā€”upekkhako satimā sukhavihārÄ«ti tatiyaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜With the fading away of rapture, may I enter and remain in the third absorption, where I will meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ā€œEquanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.ā€ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhānaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜With the giving up of pleasure and pain, and the ending of former happiness and sadness, may I enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sabbaso rÅ«pasaƱƱānaį¹ samatikkamā paį¹­ighasaƱƱānaį¹ atthaį¹…gamā nānattasaƱƱānaį¹ amanasikārā ananto ākāsoti ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the ending of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ā€œspace is infiniteā€, may I enter and remain in the dimension of infinite space.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sabbaso ākāsānaƱcāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma anantaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anti viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ā€œconsciousness is infiniteā€, may I enter and remain in the dimension of infinite consciousness.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sabbaso viƱƱāį¹‡aƱcāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma natthi kiƱcÄ«ti ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ā€œthere is nothing at allā€, may I enter and remain in the dimension of nothingness.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sabbaso ākiƱcaƱƱāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Going totally beyond the dimension of nothingness, may I enter and remain in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu cepi ākaį¹…kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:

ā€˜sabbaso nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanā€™ti, ā€˜Going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, may I enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling.ā€™

ayameva ānāpānassatisamādhi sādhukaį¹ manasi kātabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

Evaį¹ bhāvite kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassatisamādhimhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kate, sukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, sā ā€˜aniccāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anajjhositāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anabhinanditāā€™ti pajānāti; When immersion due to mindfulness of breathing has been developed and cultivated in this way, if they feel a pleasant feeling, they understand that itā€™s impermanent, that theyā€™re not attached to it, and that they donā€™t take pleasure in it.

dukkhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, sā ā€˜aniccāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anajjhositāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anabhinanditāā€™ti pajānāti; If they feel a painful feeling, they understand that itā€™s impermanent, that theyā€™re not attached to it, and that they donā€™t take pleasure in it.

adukkhamasukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, ā€˜sā aniccāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anajjhositāā€™ti pajānāti, ā€˜anabhinanditāā€™ti pajānāti. If they feel a neutral feeling, they understand that itā€™s impermanent, that theyā€™re not attached to it, and that they donā€™t take pleasure in it.

SukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, visaį¹yutto naį¹ vedayati; If they feel a pleasant feeling, they feel it detached.

dukkhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, visaį¹yutto naį¹ vedayati; If they feel a painful feeling, they feel it detached.

adukkhamasukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, visaį¹yutto naį¹ vedayati. If they feel a neutral feeling, they feel it detached.

So kāyapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayamāno ā€˜kāyapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, jÄ«vitapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayamāno ā€˜jÄ«vitapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, Feeling the end of the body approaching, they understand: ā€˜I feel the end of the body approaching.ā€™ Feeling the end of life approaching, they understand: ā€˜I feel the end of life approaching.ā€™

ā€˜kāyassa bhedā uddhaį¹ jÄ«vitapariyādānā idheva sabbavedayitāni anabhinanditāni sÄ«tÄ«bhavissantÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti. They understand: ā€˜When my body breaks up and my life has come to an end, everything thatā€™s felt, since I no longer take pleasure in it, will become cool right here.ā€™

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, telaƱca paį¹­icca, vaį¹­į¹­iƱca paį¹­icca telappadÄ«po jhāyeyya, Suppose an oil lamp depended on oil and a wick to burn.

tasseva telassa ca vaį¹­į¹­iyā ca pariyādānā anāhāro nibbāyeyya; As the oil and the wick are used up, it would be extinguished due to not being fed.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāyapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayamāno ā€˜kāyapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, jÄ«vitapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayamāno ā€˜jÄ«vitapariyantikaį¹ vedanaį¹ vedayāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, In the same way, feeling the end of the body approaching, they understand: ā€˜I feel the end of the body approaching.ā€™ Feeling the end of life approaching, they understand: ā€˜I feel the end of life approaching.ā€™

ā€˜kāyassa bhedā uddhaį¹ jÄ«vitapariyādānā idheva sabbavedayitāni anabhinanditāni sÄ«tÄ«bhavissantÄ«ā€™ti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. They understand: ā€˜When my body breaks up and my life has come to an end, everything thatā€™s felt, since I no longer take pleasure in it, will become cool right here.ā€™ā€
