Kathaį¹ bhÄvito ca, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi kathaį¹ bahulÄ«kato mahapphalo hoti mahÄnisaį¹so? How so?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vÄ rukkhamÅ«lagato vÄ suƱƱÄgÄragato vÄ nisÄ«dati pallaį¹
kaį¹ ÄbhujitvÄ ujuį¹ kÄyaį¹ paį¹idhÄya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hapetvÄ. Itās when a mendicantāgone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutāsits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.
So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

Evaį¹ bhÄvito kho, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kato mahapphalo hoti mahÄnisaį¹so. Thatās how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing, when developed and cultivated, is very fruitful and beneficial.
Ahampi sudaį¹, bhikkhave, pubbeva sambodhÄ anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samÄno iminÄ vihÄrena bahulaį¹ viharÄmi. Before my awakeningāwhen I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningāI too usually practiced this kind of meditation.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, iminÄ vihÄrena bahulaį¹ viharato neva kÄyo kilamati na cakkhÅ«ni; And while I was usually practicing this kind of meditation neither my body nor my eyes became fatigued.
anupÄdÄya ca me Äsavehi cittaį¹ vimucci. And my mind was freed from defilements by not grasping.

ayameva ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi sÄdhukaį¹ manasi kÄtabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.

kheyya: Now, a mendicant might wish:
āsabbaso nevasaƱƱÄnÄsaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ samatikkamma saƱƱÄvedayitanirodhaį¹ upasampajja vihareyyanāti, āGoing totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, may I enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling.ā
ayameva ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi sÄdhukaį¹ manasi kÄtabbo. So let them closely focus on this immersion due to mindfulness of breathing.
Evaį¹ bhÄvite kho, bhikkhave, ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhimhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kate, sukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, sÄ āaniccÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanajjhositÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanabhinanditÄāti pajÄnÄti; When immersion due to mindfulness of breathing has been developed and cultivated in this way, if they feel a pleasant feeling, they understand that itās impermanent, that theyāre not attached to it, and that they donāt take pleasure in it.
dukkhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, sÄ āaniccÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanajjhositÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanabhinanditÄāti pajÄnÄti; If they feel a painful feeling, they understand that itās impermanent, that theyāre not attached to it, and that they donāt take pleasure in it.
adukkhamasukhaƱce vedanaį¹ vedayati, āsÄ aniccÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanajjhositÄāti pajÄnÄti, āanabhinanditÄāti pajÄnÄti. If they feel a neutral feeling, they understand that itās impermanent, that theyāre not attached to it, and that they donāt take pleasure in it.

ākÄyassa bhedÄ uddhaį¹ jÄ«vitapariyÄdÄnÄ idheva sabbavedayitÄni anabhinanditÄni sÄ«tÄ«bhavissantÄ«āti pajÄnÄti. They understand: āWhen my body breaks up and my life has come to an end, everything thatās felt, since I no longer take pleasure in it, will become cool right here.ā
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, telaƱca paį¹icca, vaį¹į¹iƱca paį¹icca telappadÄ«po jhÄyeyya, Suppose an oil lamp depended on oil and a wick to burn.
tasseva telassa ca vaį¹į¹iyÄ ca pariyÄdÄnÄ anÄhÄro nibbÄyeyya; As the oil and the wick are used up, it would be extinguished due to not being fed.

ākÄyassa bhedÄ uddhaį¹ jÄ«vitapariyÄdÄnÄ idheva sabbavedayitÄni anabhinanditÄni sÄ«tÄ«bhavissantÄ«āti pajÄnÄtÄ«āti. They understand: āWhen my body breaks up and my life has come to an end, everything thatās felt, since I no longer take pleasure in it, will become cool right here.āā
