āatthi nu kho, bhante, ekadhammo bhÄvito bahulÄ«kato cattÄro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattÄro dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«āti? āSir, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills four things; and those four things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill seven things; and those seven things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill two things?ā

gÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ vijjÄvimuttiį¹ paripÅ«renti. āImmersion due to mindfulness of breathing is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. And the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors. And the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.
Kathaį¹ bhÄvito, Änanda, ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi kathaį¹ bahulÄ«kato cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄne paripÅ«reti? And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation?
IdhÄnanda, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vÄ rukkhamÅ«lagato vÄ suƱƱÄgÄragato vÄ nisÄ«dati pallaį¹
kaį¹ ÄbhujitvÄ ujuį¹ kÄyaį¹ paį¹idhÄya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hapetvÄ. Itās when a mendicantāgone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutāsits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.
So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati. They practice like this: āIāll breathe in observing letting go.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out observing letting go.ā

kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ«, Änanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
KÄyaƱƱatarÄhaį¹, Änanda, etaį¹ vadÄmi, yadidaį¹āassÄsapassÄsaį¹. Because the breath is a certain aspect of the body, I say.
TasmÄtihÄnanda, kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the bodyākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhu āpÄ«tippaį¹isaį¹vedÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, Thereās a time when a mendicant practices like this: āIāll breathe in experiencing rapture ā¦

vedanÄsu vedanÄnupassÄ«, Änanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of feelingsākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
VedanÄƱƱatarÄhaį¹, Änanda, etaį¹ vadÄmi, yadidaį¹āassÄsapassÄsÄnaį¹ sÄdhukaį¹ manasikÄraį¹. Because careful application of mind to the in-breaths and out-breaths is a certain aspect of feelings, I say.
TasmÄtihÄnanda, vedanÄsu vedanÄnupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of feelingsākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhu ācittappaį¹isaį¹vedÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, ācittappaį¹isaį¹vedÄ« passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati; Thereās a time when a mendicant practices like this: āIāll breathe in experiencing the mind.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out experiencing the mind.ā
abhippamodayaį¹ cittaį¹ ā¦peā¦ They practice like this: āIāll breathe in gladdening the mind ā¦
samÄdahaį¹ cittaį¹ ā¦ immersing the mind in samÄdhi ā¦
āvimocayaį¹ cittaį¹ assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, āvimocayaį¹ cittaį¹ passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhatiāfreeing the mind.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out freeing the mind.ā
citte cittÄnupassÄ«, Änanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the mindākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
NÄhaį¹, Änanda, muį¹į¹hassatissa asampajÄnassa ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhibhÄvanaį¹ vadÄmi. Because there is no development of immersion due to mindfulness of breathing for someone who is unmindful and lacks awareness, I say.
TasmÄtihÄnanda, citte cittÄnupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the mindākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhu aniccÄnupassÄ« ā¦peā¦ Thereās a time when a mendicant practices like this: āIāll breathe in observing impermanence ā¦
virÄgÄnupassÄ« ā¦ fading away ā¦
nirodhÄnupassÄ« ā¦ cessation ā¦
āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« assasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhati, āpaį¹inissaggÄnupassÄ« passasissÄmÄ«āti sikkhatiāletting go.ā They practice like this: āIāll breathe out observing letting go.ā
dhammesu dhammÄnupassÄ«, Änanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of principlesākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
So yaį¹ taį¹ hoti abhijjhÄdomanassÄnaį¹ pahÄnaį¹ taį¹ paƱƱÄya disvÄ sÄdhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitÄ hoti. Having seen with wisdom the giving up of covetousness and displeasure, they watch closely over with equanimity.
TasmÄtihÄnanda, dhammesu dhammÄnupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ÄtÄpÄ« sampajÄno satimÄ, vineyya loke abhijjhÄdomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of principlesākeen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.
Evaį¹ bhÄvito kho, Änanda, ÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kato cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄne paripÅ«reti. Thatās how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.
Kathaį¹ bhÄvitÄ cÄnanda, cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄnÄ kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katÄ satta bojjhaį¹
ge paripūrenti? And how are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the seven awakening factors?
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhu kÄye kÄyÄnupassÄ« viharatiāWhenever a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body,
upaį¹į¹hitÄssa tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno sati hoti asammuį¹į¹hÄ. their mindfulness is established and lucid.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhuno upaį¹į¹hitÄ sati hoti asammuį¹į¹hÄāsatisambojjhaį¹
go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti, satisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti, satisambojjhaį¹
go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of mindfulness; they develop it and perfect it.
So tathÄ sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjati. As they live mindfully in this way they investigate, explore, and inquire into that principle with wisdom.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhu tathÄ sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjatiāAt such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of investigation of principles; they develop it and perfect it.
dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹
go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹
go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.
Tassa taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱÄya pavicinato pavicarato parivÄ«maį¹samÄpajjato Äraddhaį¹ hoti vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹. As they investigate principles with wisdom in this way their energy is roused up and unflagging.

ÄraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirÄmisÄ. When youāre energetic, rapture not of the flesh arises.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhuno ÄraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirÄmisÄāAt such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of rapture; they develop it and perfect it.
pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹
go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹

PÄ«timanassa kÄyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body and mind become tranquil.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhuno pÄ«timanassa kÄyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhatiāAt such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of tranquility; they develop it and perfect it.

go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno Äraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaį¹
gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti, passaddhisambojjhaį¹

PassaddhakÄyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati. When the body is tranquil and one feels bliss, the mind becomes immersed in samÄdhi.
Yasmiį¹ samaye, Änanda, bhikkhuno passaddhakÄyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyatiāAt such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of immersion; they develop it and perfect it.

gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhÄveti, samÄdhisambojjhaį¹
