Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhante, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulÄ«kato cattāro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattāro dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills four things; and those four things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill seven things; and those seven things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill two things?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, ānanda, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulÄ«kato cattāro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattāro dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, Ānanda.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulÄ«kato cattāro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattāro dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is that one thing?ā€

ā€œÄ€nāpānassatisamādhi kho, ānanda, ekadhammo bhāvito bahulÄ«kato cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hāne paripÅ«reti, cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā satta bojjhaį¹…ge paripÅ«renti, satta bojjhaį¹…gā bhāvitā bahulÄ«katā vijjāvimuttiį¹ paripÅ«renti. ā€œImmersion due to mindfulness of breathing is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. And the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors. And the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.

Kathaį¹ bhāvito, ānanda, ānāpānassatisamādhi kathaį¹ bahulÄ«kato cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hāne paripÅ«reti? And how is mindfulness of breathing developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation?

Idhānanda, bhikkhu araƱƱagato vā rukkhamÅ«lagato vā suƱƱāgāragato vā nisÄ«dati pallaį¹…kaį¹ ābhujitvā ujuį¹ kāyaį¹ paį¹‡idhāya parimukhaį¹ satiį¹ upaį¹­į¹­hapetvā. Itā€™s when a mendicantā€”gone to a wilderness, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty hutā€”sits down cross-legged, sets their body straight, and establishes mindfulness in their presence.

So satova assasati, satova passasati. Just mindful, they breathe in. Mindful, they breathe out.

DÄ«ghaį¹ vā assasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ assasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, dÄ«ghaį¹ vā passasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ passasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ Breathing in heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing in heavily.ā€™ Breathing out heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing out heavily.ā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati. They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu dÄ«ghaį¹ vā assasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ assasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti, dÄ«ghaį¹ vā passasanto ā€˜dÄ«ghaį¹ passasāmÄ«ā€™ti pajānāti; Thereā€™s a time when a mendicant is breathing in heavily, and they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing in heavily.ā€™ Breathing out heavily they know: ā€˜Iā€™m breathing out heavily.ā€™

rassaį¹ vā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€¦

ā€˜passambhayaį¹ kāyasaį¹…khāraį¹ assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜passambhayaį¹ kāyasaį¹…khāraį¹ passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhatiā€”They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in stilling physical processes.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out stilling physical processes.ā€™

kāye kāyānupassÄ«, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

KāyaƱƱatarāhaį¹, ānanda, etaį¹ vadāmi, yadidaį¹ā€”assāsapassāsaį¹. Because the breath is a certain aspect of the body, I say.

Tasmātihānanda, kāye kāyānupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the bodyā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu ā€˜pÄ«tippaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, Thereā€™s a time when a mendicant practices like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in experiencing rapture ā€¦

sukhappaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ā€¦peā€¦ bliss ā€¦

cittasaį¹…khārappaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« ā€¦ mind ā€¦ā€™ ā€¦

ā€˜passambhayaį¹ cittasaį¹…khāraį¹ assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜passambhayaį¹ cittasaį¹…khāraį¹ passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhatiā€”They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in stilling mental processes.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out stilling mental processes.ā€™

vedanāsu vedanānupassÄ«, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of feelingsā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

VedanāƱƱatarāhaį¹, ānanda, etaį¹ vadāmi, yadidaį¹ā€”assāsapassāsānaį¹ sādhukaį¹ manasikāraį¹. Because careful application of mind to the in-breaths and out-breaths is a certain aspect of feelings, I say.

Tasmātihānanda, vedanāsu vedanānupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of feelingsā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu ā€˜cittappaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜cittappaį¹­isaį¹vedÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati; Thereā€™s a time when a mendicant practices like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in experiencing the mind.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out experiencing the mind.ā€™

abhippamodayaį¹ cittaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in gladdening the mind ā€¦

samādahaį¹ cittaį¹ ā€¦ immersing the mind in samādhi ā€¦

ā€˜vimocayaį¹ cittaį¹ assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜vimocayaį¹ cittaį¹ passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhatiā€”freeing the mind.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out freeing the mind.ā€™

citte cittānupassÄ«, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the mindā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Nāhaį¹, ānanda, muį¹­į¹­hassatissa asampajānassa ānāpānassatisamādhibhāvanaį¹ vadāmi. Because there is no development of immersion due to mindfulness of breathing for someone who is unmindful and lacks awareness, I say.

Tasmātihānanda, citte cittānupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of the mindā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu aniccānupassÄ« ā€¦peā€¦ Thereā€™s a time when a mendicant practices like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe in observing impermanence ā€¦

virāgānupassÄ« ā€¦ fading away ā€¦

nirodhānupassÄ« ā€¦ cessation ā€¦

ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« assasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhati, ā€˜paį¹­inissaggānupassÄ« passasissāmÄ«ā€™ti sikkhatiā€”letting go.ā€™ They practice like this: ā€˜Iā€™ll breathe out observing letting go.ā€™

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ«, ānanda, bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. At such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

So yaį¹ taį¹ hoti abhijjhādomanassānaį¹ pahānaį¹ taį¹ paƱƱāya disvā sādhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. Having seen with wisdom the giving up of covetousness and displeasure, they watch closely over with equanimity.

Tasmātihānanda, dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« bhikkhu tasmiį¹ samaye viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaį¹. Therefore, at such a time a mendicant is meditating by observing an aspect of principlesā€”keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world.

Evaį¹ bhāvito kho, ānanda, ānāpānassatisamādhi evaį¹ bahulÄ«kato cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hāne paripÅ«reti. Thatā€™s how immersion due to mindfulness of breathing is developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the four kinds of mindfulness meditation.

Kathaį¹ bhāvitā cānanda, cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katā satta bojjhaį¹…ge paripÅ«renti? And how are the four kinds of mindfulness meditation developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the seven awakening factors?

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharatiā€”Whenever a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body,

upaį¹­į¹­hitāssa tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno sati hoti asammuį¹­į¹­hā. their mindfulness is established and lucid.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno upaį¹­į¹­hitā sati hoti asammuį¹­į¹­hāā€”satisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, satisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati. At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of mindfulness; they develop it and perfect it.

So tathā sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱāya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samāpajjati. As they live mindfully in this way they investigate, explore, and inquire into that principle with wisdom.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu tathā sato viharanto taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱāya pavicinati pavicarati parivÄ«maį¹samāpajjatiā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of investigation of principles; they develop it and perfect it.

dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

Tassa taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱāya pavicinato pavicarato parivÄ«maį¹samāpajjato āraddhaį¹ hoti vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹. As they investigate principles with wisdom in this way their energy is roused up and unflagging.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno taį¹ dhammaį¹ paƱƱāya pavicinato pavicarato parivÄ«maį¹samāpajjato āraddhaį¹ hoti vÄ«riyaį¹ asallÄ«naį¹ā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of energy; they develop it and perfect it.

vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, vÄ«riyasambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

ĀraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirāmisā. When youā€™re energetic, rapture not of the flesh arises.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno āraddhavÄ«riyassa uppajjati pÄ«ti nirāmisāā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of rapture; they develop it and perfect it.

pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, pÄ«tisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

Pītimanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body and mind become tranquil.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno pÄ«timanassa kāyopi passambhati, cittampi passambhatiā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of tranquility; they develop it and perfect it.

passaddhisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, passaddhisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, passaddhisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

Passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyati. When the body is tranquil and one feels bliss, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno passaddhakāyassa sukhino cittaį¹ samādhiyatiā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of immersion; they develop it and perfect it.

samādhisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, samādhisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, samādhisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

So tathāsamāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sādhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. They closely watch over that mind immersed in samādhi.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu tathāsamāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sādhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitā hotiā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of equanimity; they develop it and perfect it.

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu vedanāsu ā€¦peā€¦ Whenever a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of feelings ā€¦

dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharatiā€”principles,

upaį¹­į¹­hitāssa tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno sati hoti asammuį¹­į¹­hā. their mindfulness is established and lucid.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhuno upaį¹­į¹­hitā sati hoti asammuį¹­į¹­hāā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of mindfulness; they develop it and perfect it. ā€¦

satisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, satisambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

So tathāsamāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sādhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitā hoti. They closely watch over that mind immersed in samādhi.

Yasmiį¹ samaye, ānanda, bhikkhu tathāsamāhitaį¹ cittaį¹ sādhukaį¹ ajjhupekkhitā hotiā€”At such a time, a mendicant has activated the awakening factor of equanimity; they develop it and perfect it.

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno āraddho hoti, upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhu bhāveti, upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…go tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhuno bhāvanāpāripÅ«riį¹ gacchati.

Evaį¹ bhāvitā kho, ānanda, cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā evaį¹ bahulÄ«katā satta bojjhaį¹…ge paripÅ«renti. Thatā€™s how the four kinds of mindfulness meditation are developed and cultivated so as to fulfill the seven awakening factors.

Kathaį¹ bhāvitā, ānanda, satta bojjhaį¹…gā kathaį¹ bahulÄ«katā vijjāvimuttiį¹ paripÅ«renti? And how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to fulfill knowledge and freedom?

Idhānanda, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹, Itā€™s when a mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness,

dhammavicayasambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti ā€¦peā€¦ investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion,

upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaį¹ bhāveti vivekanissitaį¹ virāganissitaį¹ nirodhanissitaį¹ vossaggapariį¹‡Ämiį¹. and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.

Evaį¹ bhāvitā kho, ānanda, satta bojjhaį¹…gā evaį¹ bahulÄ«katā vijjāvimuttiį¹ paripÅ«rentÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated so as to fulfill knowledge and freedom.ā€
