Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āatthi nu kho, bhante, ekadhammo bhÄvito bahulÄ«kato cattÄro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattÄro dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«āti? āSir, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills four things; and those four things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill seven things; and those seven things, when developed and cultivated, fulfill two things?ā
āAtthi kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo bhÄvito bahulÄ«kato cattÄro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattÄro dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«āti. āThere is, mendicants.ā
āKatamo pana, bhante, ekadhammo bhÄvito bahulÄ«kato cattÄro dhamme paripÅ«reti, cattÄro dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satta dhamme paripÅ«renti, satta dhammÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ dve dhamme paripÅ«rentÄ«āti? āSir, what is that one thing?ā
āÄnÄpÄnassatisamÄdhi kho, bhikkhave, ekadhammo bhÄvito bahulÄ«kato cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄne paripÅ«reti, cattÄro satipaį¹į¹hÄnÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ satta bojjhaį¹
ge paripÅ«renti, satta bojjhaį¹
gÄ bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ vijjÄvimuttiį¹ paripÅ«rentÄ«ti. āImmersion due to mindfulness of breathing is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, fulfills the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. And the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, when developed and cultivated, fulfill the seven awakening factors. And the seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, fulfill knowledge and freedom.
