Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Then Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

ā€œā€˜sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, sotāpattiyaį¹…ganā€™ti hidaį¹, sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œSāriputta, they speak of a ā€˜factor of stream-entryā€™.

Katamaį¹ nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaį¹…ganā€ti? What is a factor of stream-entry?ā€

ā€œSappurisasaį¹sevo hi, bhante, sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, saddhammassavanaį¹ sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipatti sotāpattiyaį¹…ganā€ti. ā€œSir, the factors of stream-entry are associating with true persons, listening to the true teaching, rational application of mind, and practicing in line with the teaching.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Sappurisasaį¹sevo hi, sāriputta, sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, saddhammassavanaį¹ sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, yonisomanasikāro sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹, dhammānudhammappaį¹­ipatti sotāpattiyaį¹…gaį¹. For the factors of stream-entry are associating with true persons, listening to the true teaching, rational application of mind, and practicing in line with the teaching.

ā€˜Soto, sotoā€™ti hidaį¹, sāriputta, vuccati. Sāriputta, they speak of ā€˜the streamā€™.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, sotoā€ti? What is the stream?ā€

ā€œAyameva hi, bhante, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo soto, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ā€œSir, the stream is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi, sammāsaį¹…kappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājÄ«vo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhÄ«ā€ti. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Ayameva hi, sāriputta, ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo soto, seyyathidaį¹ā€”For the stream is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

sammādiį¹­į¹­hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

ā€˜Sotāpanno, sotāpannoā€™ti hidaį¹, sāriputta, vuccati. Sāriputta, they speak of ā€˜a stream-entererā€™.

Katamo nu kho, sāriputta, sotāpannoā€ti? What is a stream-enterer?ā€

ā€œYo hi, bhante, iminā ariyena aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikena maggena samannāgato ayaį¹ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaį¹ āyasmā evaį¹nāmo evaį¹…gottoā€ti. ā€œSir, anyone who possesses this noble eightfold path is called a stream-enterer, the venerable of such and such name and clan.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, sāriputta. ā€œGood, good, Sāriputta!

Yo hi, sāriputta, iminā ariyena aį¹­į¹­haį¹…gikena maggena samannāgato ayaį¹ vuccati sotāpanno, svāyaį¹ āyasmā evaį¹nāmo evaį¹…gottoā€ti. For anyone who possesses this noble eightfold path is called a stream-enterer, the venerable of such and such name and clan.ā€
