Sahassabhikkhunisaį¹…ghasutta A Saį¹…gha of a Thousand Nuns

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati rājakārāme. At one time the Buddha was staying near SāvatthÄ« in the Royal Monastery.

Atha kho sahassabhikkhunisaį¹…gho yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹­hitā kho tā bhikkhuniyo bhagavā etadavoca: Then a Saį¹…gha of a thousand nuns went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. The Buddha said to them:

ā€œCatÅ«hi kho, bhikkhuniyo, dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡o. ā€œNuns, a noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, bhikkhuniyo, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hotiā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāti.

Dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannāgato hoti, akhaį¹‡įøehi ā€¦peā€¦ samādhisaį¹vattanikehi. And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones ā€¦ leading to immersion.

Imehi kho, bhikkhuniyo, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€ti. A noble disciple who has these four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.ā€
