DutiyamahÄnÄmasutta With MahÄnÄma (2nd)
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
Atha kho mahÄnÄmo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄnÄmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then MahÄnÄma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āidaį¹, bhante, kapilavatthu iddhaƱceva phÄ«taƱca bÄhujaƱƱaį¹ Äkiį¹į¹amanussaį¹ sambÄdhabyÅ«haį¹. āSir, this Kapilavatthu is successful and prosperous, populous, full of people, with cramped cul-de-sacs.
So khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavantaį¹ vÄ payirupÄsitvÄ manobhÄvanÄ«ye vÄ bhikkhÅ« sÄyanhasamayaį¹ kapilavatthuį¹ pavisanto; In the late afternoon, after paying homage to the Buddha or an esteemed mendicant, I enter Kapilavatthu.
bhantenapi hatthinÄ samÄgacchÄmi; I encounter a stray elephant,
bhantenapi assena samÄgacchÄmi; horse,
bhantenapi rathena samÄgacchÄmi; chariot,
bhantenapi sakaį¹ena samÄgacchÄmi; cart,
bhantenapi purisena samÄgacchÄmi. or person.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, tasmiį¹ samaye mussateva bhagavantaį¹ Ärabbha sati, mussati dhammaį¹ Ärabbha sati, mussati saį¹
ghaį¹ Ärabbha sati. At that time I lose mindfulness regarding the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹
gha.
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhante, evaį¹ hoti: I think:
āimamhi cÄhaį¹ samaye kÄlaį¹ kareyyaį¹, kÄ mayhaį¹ gati, ko abhisamparÄyoāāti? āIf I were to die at this time, where would I be reborn in my next life?āā
āMÄ bhÄyi, mahÄnÄma, mÄ bhÄyi, mahÄnÄma. āDo not fear, MahÄnÄma, do not fear!
ApÄpakaį¹ te maraį¹aį¹ bhavissati apÄpikÄ kÄlaį¹
kiriyÄ. Your death will not be a bad one; your passing will not be a bad one.
CatÅ«hi kho, mahÄnÄma, dhammehi samannÄgato ariyasÄvako nibbÄnaninno hoti nibbÄnapoį¹o nibbÄnapabbhÄro. A noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards extinguishment.
Katamehi catūhi? What four?
Idha, mahÄnÄma, ariyasÄvako buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato hotiāItās when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā¦
itipi so bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti.

ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgato hoti akhaį¹įøehi ā¦peā¦ samÄdhisaį¹vattanikehi. And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones ā¦ leading to immersion.
SeyyathÄpi, mahÄnÄma, rukkho pÄcÄ«naninno pÄcÄ«napoį¹o pÄcÄ«napabbhÄro, so mÅ«lacchinno katamena papateyyÄāti? Suppose there was a tree that slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. If it was cut off at the root where would it fall?ā
āYena, bhante, ninno yena poį¹o yena pabbhÄroāti. āSir, it would fall in the direction that it slants, slopes, and inclines.ā
āEvameva kho, mahÄnÄma, imehi catÅ«hi dhammehi samannÄgato ariyasÄvako nibbÄnaninno hoti nibbÄnapoį¹o nibbÄnapabbhÄroāti. āIn the same way, a noble disciple who has four things slants, slopes, and inclines towards extinguishment.ā
