Tena kho pana samayena saraį¹Äni sakko kÄlaį¹
kato hoti. Now at that time SarakÄni the Sakyan had passed away.
So bhagavatÄ byÄkato: The Buddha declared that he was
āsotÄpanno avinipÄtadhammo niyato sambodhiparÄyaį¹oāti. a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.
Tatra sudaį¹ sambahulÄ sakkÄ saį¹
gamma samÄgamma ujjhÄyanti khÄ«yanti vipÄcenti: At that, several Sakyans came together complaining, grumbling, and objecting,
āacchariyaį¹ vata bho, abbhutaį¹ vata bho. āOh lord, how incredible, how amazing!
Ettha dÄni ko na sotÄpanno bhavissati. Who canāt become a stream-enterer these days?
Yatra hi nÄma saraį¹Äni sakko kÄlaį¹
kato; For the Buddha even declared SarakÄni to be a stream-enterer after he passed away.
so bhagavatÄ byÄkato:
āsotÄpanno avinipÄtadhammo niyato sambodhiparÄyaį¹oāti.
Saraį¹Äni sakko sikkhÄdubbalyamÄpÄdi, majjapÄnaį¹ apÄyÄ«āti. SarakÄni was too weak for the training; he used to drink liquor.ā
Atha kho mahÄnÄmo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄnÄmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then MahÄnÄma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. The Buddha said:

gha, how could they go to the underworld?
YaƱhi taį¹, mahÄnÄma, sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya: And if anyone should rightly be said to
ādÄ«gharattaį¹ upÄsako buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato saį¹
ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatoāti, saraį¹Äni sakkaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. have for a long time gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹

So ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati. Theyāve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
Ayampi kho, mahÄnÄma, puggalo parimutto nirayÄ parimutto tiracchÄnayoniyÄ parimutto pettivisayÄ parimutto apÄyaduggativinipÄtÄ. This person is exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. Theyāre exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld.

So paƱcannaį¹ orambhÄgiyÄnaį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ opapÄtiko hoti tattha parinibbÄyÄ« anÄvattidhammo tasmÄ lokÄ. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyāre reborn spontaneously. They are extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world.

So tiį¹į¹aį¹ saį¹yojanÄnaį¹ parikkhayÄ rÄgadosamohÄnaį¹ tanuttÄ sakadÄgÄmÄ« hoti, sakideva imaį¹ lokaį¹ ÄgantvÄ dukkhassantaį¹ karoti. With the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, theyāre a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.

TathÄgatappaveditÄ cassa dhammÄ paƱƱÄya mattaso nijjhÄnaį¹ khamanti. And they accept the teachings proclaimed by the Realized One after deliberating them with a degree of wisdom.
