3. Saraį¹‡Änivagga 3. About Sarakāni

Paį¹hamasaraį¹‡Änisakkasutta About Sarakāni (1st)

Kapilavatthunidānaį¹. At Kapilavatthu.

Tena kho pana samayena saraį¹‡Äni sakko kālaį¹…kato hoti. Now at that time Sarakāni the Sakyan had passed away.

So bhagavatā byākato: The Buddha declared that he was

ā€œsotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€ti. a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

Tatra sudaį¹ sambahulā sakkā saį¹…gamma samāgamma ujjhāyanti khÄ«yanti vipācenti: At that, several Sakyans came together complaining, grumbling, and objecting,

ā€œacchariyaį¹ vata bho, abbhutaį¹ vata bho. ā€œOh lord, how incredible, how amazing!

Ettha dāni ko na sotāpanno bhavissati. Who canā€™t become a stream-enterer these days?

Yatra hi nāma saraį¹‡Äni sakko kālaį¹…kato; For the Buddha even declared Sarakāni to be a stream-enterer after he passed away.

so bhagavatā byākato:

ā€˜sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€™ti.

Saraį¹‡Äni sakko sikkhādubbalyamāpādi, majjapānaį¹ apāyÄ«ā€ti. Sarakāni was too weak for the training; he used to drink liquor.ā€

Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. The Buddha said:

ā€œidha, bhante, saraį¹‡Äni sakko kālaį¹…kato.

So bhagavatā byākato:

ā€˜sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€™ti.

Tatra sudaį¹, bhante, sambahulā sakkā saį¹…gamma samāgamma ujjhāyanti khÄ«yanti vipācentiā€”

acchariyaį¹ vata, bho, abbhutaį¹ vata, bho.

Ettha dāni ko na sotāpanno bhavissati.

Yatra hi nāma saraį¹‡Äni sakko kālaį¹…kato;

so bhagavatā byākato:

ā€˜sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€™ti.

Saraį¹‡Äni sakko sikkhādubbalyamāpādi, majjapānaį¹ apāyÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œYo so, mahānāma, dÄ«gharattaį¹ upāsako buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato, so kathaį¹ vinipātaį¹ gaccheyya. ā€œMahānāma, when a lay follower has for a long time gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha, how could they go to the underworld?

YaƱhi taį¹, mahānāma, sammā vadamāno vadeyya: And if anyone should rightly be said to

ā€˜dÄ«gharattaį¹ upāsako buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatoā€™ti, saraį¹‡Äni sakkaį¹ sammā vadamāno vadeyya. have for a long time gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha, itā€™s Sarakāni the Sakyan.

Saraį¹‡Äni, mahānāma, sakko dÄ«gharattaį¹ upāsako buddhaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato dhammaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato saį¹…ghaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gato. Sarakāni the Sakyan has for a long time gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha.

So kathaį¹ vinipātaį¹ gaccheyya. How could he go to the underworld?

Idha, mahānāma, ekacco puggalo buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hotiā€”Take a certain person who has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāti.

Dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

hāsapaƱƱo javanapaƱƱo vimuttiyā ca samannāgato. They have laughing wisdom and swift wisdom, and are endowed with freedom.

So āsavānaį¹ khayā anāsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱāvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. Theyā€™ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Ayampi kho, mahānāma, puggalo parimutto nirayā parimutto tiracchānayoniyā parimutto pettivisayā parimutto apāyaduggativinipātā. This person is exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. Theyā€™re exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld.

Idha pana, mahānāma, ekacco puggalo buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hotiā€”Take another person who has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāti.

Dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

hāsapaƱƱo javanapaƱƱo na ca vimuttiyā samannāgato. They have laughing wisdom and swift wisdom, but are not endowed with freedom.

So paƱcannaį¹ orambhāgiyānaį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyÄ« anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā. With the ending of the five lower fetters theyā€™re reborn spontaneously. They are extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world.

Ayampi kho, mahānāma, puggalo parimutto nirayā parimutto tiracchānayoniyā parimutto pettivisayā parimutto apāyaduggativinipātā. This person, too, is exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm.

Dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

na hāsapaƱƱo na javanapaƱƱo na ca vimuttiyā samannāgato. But they donā€™t have laughing wisdom or swift wisdom, nor are they endowed with freedom.

So tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaį¹ tanuttā sakadāgāmÄ« hoti, sakideva imaį¹ lokaį¹ āgantvā dukkhassantaį¹ karoti. With the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, theyā€™re a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.

Ayampi kho, mahānāma, puggalo parimutto nirayā parimutto tiracchānayoniyā parimutto pettivisayā parimutto apāyaduggativinipātā. This person, too, is exempt from hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. Theyā€™re exempt from places of loss, bad places, the underworld.

Idha pana, mahānāma, ekacco puggalo buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hotiā€”Take another person who has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāti;

dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

na hāsapaƱƱo na javanapaƱƱo na ca vimuttiyā samannāgato. But they donā€™t have laughing wisdom or swift wisdom, nor are they endowed with freedom.

So tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹yojanānaį¹ parikkhayā sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oti. With the ending of three fetters theyā€™re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

Idha pana, mahānāma, ekacco puggalo na heva kho buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti ā€¦ Take another person who doesnā€™t have experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

na dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

na saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

na hāsapaƱƱo na javanapaƱƱo na ca vimuttiyā samannāgato. They donā€™t have laughing wisdom or swift wisdom, nor are they endowed with freedom.

Api cassa ime dhammā hontiā€”Still, they have these qualities:

saddhindriyaį¹, vÄ«riyindriyaį¹, satindriyaį¹, samādhindriyaį¹, paƱƱindriyaį¹. the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

Tathāgatappaveditā cassa dhammā paƱƱāya mattaso nijjhānaį¹ khamanti. And they accept the teachings proclaimed by the Realized One after deliberating them with a degree of wisdom.

Ayampi kho, mahānāma, puggalo agantā nirayaį¹ agantā tiracchānayoniį¹ agantā pettivisayaį¹ agantā apāyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipātaį¹. This person, too, doesnā€™t go to hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. They donā€™t go to places of loss, bad places, the underworld.

Idha pana, mahānāma, ekacco puggalo na heva kho buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti ā€¦ Take another person who doesnā€™t have experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

na dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

na saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

na hāsapaƱƱo na javanapaƱƱo na ca vimuttiyā samannāgato, They donā€™t have laughing wisdom or swift wisdom, nor are they endowed with freedom.

api cassa ime dhammā honti Still, they have these qualities:

saddhindriyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ paƱƱindriyaį¹. the faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

Tathāgate cassa saddhāmattaį¹ hoti pemamattaį¹. And they have a degree of faith and love for the Buddha.

Ime cepi, mahānāma, mahāsālā subhāsitaį¹ dubbhāsitaį¹ ājāneyyuį¹, ime cāhaį¹ mahāsāle byākareyyaį¹: ā€˜sotāpannā avinipātadhammā niyatā sambodhiparāyaį¹‡Äā€™ti; If these great sal trees could understand what was well said and poorly said, Iā€™d declare them to be stream-enterers.

kimaį¹…gaį¹ pana saraį¹‡Äniį¹ sakkaį¹. Why canā€™t this apply to Sarakāni?

Saraį¹‡Äni, mahānāma, sakko maraį¹‡akāle sikkhaį¹ samādiyÄ«ā€ti. Mahānāma, Sarakāni the Sakyan undertook the training at the time of his death.ā€
