Nandiyasutta With Nandiya

Kapilavatthunidānaį¹. At Kapilavatthu.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho nandiyaį¹ sakkaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: Seated to one side, the Buddha said to Nandiya the Sakyan:

ā€œcatÅ«hi kho, nandiya, dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡o. ā€œNandiya, a noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

Katamehi catūhi? What four?

Idha, nandiya, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hotiā€”Itā€™s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ā€¦

itipi so bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ satthā devamanussānaį¹ buddho bhagavāti.

Dhamme ā€¦peā€¦ the teaching ā€¦

saį¹…ghe ā€¦peā€¦ the Saį¹…gha ā€¦

ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannāgato hoti akhaį¹‡įøehi ā€¦peā€¦ samādhisaį¹vattanikehi. And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones ā€¦ leading to immersion.

Imehi kho, nandiya, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannāgato ariyasāvako sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaį¹‡oā€ti. A noble disciple who has these four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.ā€
