Vitakkasutta Thoughts

ā€œMā, bhikkhave, pāpake akusale vitakke vitakkeyyātha, seyyathidaį¹ā€”ā€œMendicants, donā€™t think bad, unskillful thoughts, such as

kāmavitakkaį¹, byāpādavitakkaį¹, vihiį¹sāvitakkaį¹. sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Nete, bhikkhave, vitakkā atthasaį¹hitā nādibrahmacariyakā na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattanti. Because those thoughts arenā€™t beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. They donā€™t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

Vitakkentā ca kho tumhe, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti vitakkeyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti vitakkeyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti vitakkeyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadāā€™ti vitakkeyyātha. When you think, you should think: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.
