Viggāhikakathāsutta Arguments

ā€œMā, bhikkhave, viggāhikakathaį¹ katheyyātha: ā€œMendicants, donā€™t get into arguments, such as:

ā€˜na tvaį¹ imaį¹ dhammavinayaį¹ ājānāsi, ahaį¹ imaį¹ dhammavinayaį¹ ājānāmi. Kiį¹ tvaį¹ imaį¹ dhammavinayaį¹ ājānissasi. Micchāpaį¹ipanno tvamasi, ahamasmi sammāpaį¹ipanno. Sahitaį¹ me, asahitaį¹ te. PurevacanÄ«yaį¹ pacchā avaca, pacchāvacanÄ«yaį¹ pure avaca. Adhiciį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ te viparāvattaį¹. Āropito te vādo, cara vādappamokkhāya. Niggahitosi, nibbeį¹hehi vā sace pahosÄ«ā€™ti. ā€˜You donā€™t understand this teaching and training. I understand this teaching and training. What, you understand this teaching and training? Youā€™re practicing wrong. Iā€™m practicing right. I stay on topic, you donā€™t. You said last what you should have said first. You said first what you should have said last. What youā€™ve thought so much about has been disproved. Your doctrine is refuted. Go on, save your doctrine! Youā€™re trapped; get yourself out of thisā€”if you can!ā€™

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Nesā, bhikkhave, kathā atthasaį¹hitā nādibrahmacariyakā na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati. Because those discussions arenā€™t beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. They donā€™t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

Kathentā ca kho tumhe, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti katheyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti katheyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti katheyyātha, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadāā€™ti katheyyātha ā€¦peā€¦ When you discuss, you should discuss: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™. ā€¦

yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
