āDhÄretha no tumhe, bhikkhave, mayÄ cattÄri ariyasaccÄni desitÄnÄ«āti? āMendicants, do you remember the four noble truths that I taught?ā
Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha:
āahaį¹ kho, bhante, dhÄremi bhagavatÄ cattÄri ariyasaccÄni desitÄnÄ«āti. āI do, sir.ā
āYathÄ kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhÄresi mayÄ cattÄri ariyasaccÄni desitÄnÄ«āti? āHow so, mendicant?ā
āDukkhaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ paį¹hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhÄremi; āSir, I remember that suffering is the first noble truth youāve taught;
dukkhasamudayaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ dutiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhÄremi; the origin of suffering is the second;
dukkhanirodhaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ tatiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhÄremi; the cessation of suffering is the third;
dukkhanirodhagÄminiį¹ paį¹ipadaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ catutthaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhÄremi. and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering is the fourth.
Evaį¹ khvÄhaį¹, bhante, dhÄremi bhagavatÄ cattÄri ariyasaccÄni desitÄnÄ«āti. Thatās how I remember the four noble truths as youāve taught them.ā
āSÄdhu sÄdhu, bhikkhu. āGood, good, mendicant!
SÄdhu kho tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhÄresi mayÄ cattÄri ariyasaccÄni desitÄnÄ«ti. Itās good that you remember the four noble truths as Iāve taught them.
Dukkhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayÄ paį¹hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathÄ naį¹ dhÄrehi; Suffering is the first noble truth Iāve taught, and thatās how you should remember it.
dukkhasamudayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayÄ dutiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathÄ naį¹ dhÄrehi; The origin of suffering is the second;
dukkhanirodhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayÄ tatiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathÄ naį¹ dhÄrehi; the cessation of suffering is the third;
