Paį¹­hamadhāraį¹‡asutta Remembering (1st)

ā€œDhāretha no tumhe, bhikkhave, mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you remember the four noble truths that I taught?ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha:

ā€œahaį¹ kho, bhante, dhāremi bhagavatā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti. ā€œI do, sir.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhāresi mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti? ā€œHow so, mendicant?ā€

ā€œDukkhaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi; ā€œSir, I remember that suffering is the first noble truth youā€™ve taught;

dukkhasamudayaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā dutiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi; the origin of suffering is the second;

dukkhanirodhaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā tatiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi; the cessation of suffering is the third;

dukkhanirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā catutthaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi. and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering is the fourth.

Evaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, dhāremi bhagavatā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how I remember the four noble truths as youā€™ve taught them.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, bhikkhu. ā€œGood, good, mendicant!

Sādhu kho tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhāresi mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ti. Itā€™s good that you remember the four noble truths as Iā€™ve taught them.

Dukkhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayā paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathā naį¹ dhārehi; Suffering is the first noble truth Iā€™ve taught, and thatā€™s how you should remember it.

dukkhasamudayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayā dutiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathā naį¹ dhārehi; The origin of suffering is the second;

dukkhanirodhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayā tatiyaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathā naį¹ dhārehi; the cessation of suffering is the third;

dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā kho, bhikkhu, mayā catutthaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathā naį¹ dhārehi. and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering is the fourth.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, dhārehi mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ti. Thatā€™s how you should remember the four noble truths as Iā€™ve taught them.
