ā€œDhāretha no tumhe, bhikkhave, mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you remember the four noble truths that I taught?ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha:

ā€œahaį¹ kho, bhante, dhāremi bhagavatā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti. ā€œI do, sir.ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhāresi mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ā€ti? ā€œHow so, mendicant?ā€

ā€œDukkhaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi. ā€œSir, I remember that suffering is the first noble truth youā€™ve taught.

Yo hi koci, bhante, samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā evaį¹ vadeyya: For if any ascetic or brahmin should say this:

ā€˜netaį¹ dukkhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yaį¹ samaį¹‡ena gotamena desitaį¹. ā€˜What the ascetic Gotama teaches is not the first noble truth of suffering.

Ahametaį¹ dukkhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ paccakkhāya aƱƱaį¹ dukkhaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ paƱƱapessāmÄ«ā€™tiā€”Iā€™ll reject this first noble truth of suffering and describe another first noble truth of suffering.ā€™

dukkhanirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ khvāhaį¹, bhante, bhagavatā catutthaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹ dhāremi. The practice that leads to the cessation of suffering is the fourth noble truth youā€™ve taught.

Yo hi koci, bhante, samaį¹‡o vā brāhmaį¹‡o vā evaį¹ vadeyya: For if any ascetic or brahmin should say this:

ā€˜netaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā catutthaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ yaį¹ samaį¹‡ena gotamena desitaį¹. ā€˜What the ascetic Gotama teaches is not the fourth noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.

Sādhu kho tvaį¹, bhikkhu, dhāresi mayā cattāri ariyasaccāni desitānÄ«ti. Itā€™s good that you remember the four noble truths as Iā€™ve taught them.

Dukkhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, mayā paį¹­hamaį¹ ariyasaccaį¹ desitaį¹, tathā naį¹ dhārehi. Suffering is the first noble truth Iā€™ve taught, and thatā€™s how you should remember it.
