Avijjāsutta Ignorance

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjāā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignoranceā€™.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, dukkhe aƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, dukkhasamudaye aƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, dukkhanirodhe aƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, dukkhanirodhagāminiyā paį¹­ipadāya aƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ā€”ā€œNot knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.

ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotīti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhu, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
