VijjÄsutta Knowledge
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āāvijjÄ, vijjÄāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of this thing called āknowledgeā.
KatamÄ nu kho, bhante, vijjÄ; What is knowledge?
kittÄvatÄ ca vijjÄgato hotÄ«āti? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā
āYaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, dukkhe ƱÄį¹aį¹, dukkhasamudaye ƱÄį¹aį¹, dukkhanirodhe ƱÄį¹aį¹, dukkhanirodhagÄminiyÄ paį¹ipadÄya ƱÄį¹aį¹āāKnowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjÄ; This is called knowledge.
ettÄvatÄ ca vijjÄgato hotÄ«ti. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.
