āYe hi keci, bhikkhave, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āMendicants, there are ascetics and brahmins who donāt truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
na me te, bhikkhave, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ samaį¹esu vÄ samaį¹asammatÄ brÄhmaį¹esu vÄ brÄhmaį¹asammatÄ, na ca pana te Äyasmanto sÄmaƱƱatthaį¹ vÄ brahmaƱƱatthaį¹ vÄ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharanti. I donāt deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables donāt realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and donāt live having realized it with their own insight.
Ye ca kho keci, bhikkhave, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ pajÄnanti, There are ascetics and brahmins who do truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
te kho me, bhikkhave, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ samaį¹esu ceva samaį¹asammatÄ brÄhmaį¹esu ca brÄhmaį¹asammatÄ, te ca panÄyasmanto sÄmaƱƱatthaƱca brahmaƱƱatthaƱca diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharantÄ«āti. I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
āYe dukkhaį¹ nappajÄnanti, āThere are those who donāt understand suffering
atho dukkhassa sambhavaį¹; and sufferingās cause,
Yattha ca sabbaso dukkhaį¹, and where all suffering
asesaį¹ uparujjhati. ceases with nothing left over.
TaƱca maggaį¹ na jÄnanti, And they do not know the path
DukkhÅ«pasamagÄminaį¹; that leads to the stilling of suffering.
CetovimuttihÄ«nÄ te, They lack the heartās release,
Atho paƱƱÄvimuttiyÄ; as well as the release by wisdom.
AbhabbÄ te antakiriyÄya, Unable to make an end,
Te ve jÄtijarÅ«pagÄ. they continue to be reborn and grow old.
Ye ca dukkhaį¹ pajÄnanti, But there are those who understand suffering
atho dukkhassa sambhavaį¹; and sufferingās cause,
Yattha ca sabbaso dukkhaį¹, and where all suffering
asesaį¹ uparujjhati. ceases with nothing left over.
TaƱca maggaį¹ pajÄnanti, And they understand the path
dukkhÅ«pasamagÄminaį¹; that leads to the stilling of suffering.
CetovimuttisampannÄ, Theyāre endowed with the heartās release,
atho paƱƱÄvimuttiyÄ; as well as the release by wisdom.
BhabbÄ te antakiriyÄya, Able to make an end,
na te jÄtijarÅ«pagÄāti. they donāt continue to be reborn and grow old.ā
Dutiyaį¹.
