Sīsapāvanasutta In a Rosewood Forest

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati sÄ«sapāvane. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ« in a rosewood forest.

Atha kho bhagavā parittāni sÄ«sapāpaį¹‡į¹‡Äni pāį¹‡inā gahetvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: Then the Buddha picked up a few rosewood leaves in his hand and addressed the mendicants:

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, ā€œWhat do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹ā€”Which is more:

yāni vā mayā parittāni sÄ«sapāpaį¹‡į¹‡Äni pāį¹‡inā gahitāni yadidaį¹ upari sÄ«sapāvaneā€ti? the few leaves in my hand, or those in the forest above me?ā€

ā€œAppamattakāni, bhante, bhagavatā parittāni sÄ«sapāpaį¹‡į¹‡Äni pāį¹‡inā gahitāni; ā€œSir, the few leaves in your hand are a tiny amount.

atha kho etāneva bahutarāni yadidaį¹ upari sÄ«sapāvaneā€ti. There are far more leaves in the forest above.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, etadeva bahutaraį¹ yaį¹ vo mayā abhiƱƱāya anakkhātaį¹. ā€œIn the same way, there is much more that I have directly known but have not explained to you. What I have explained is a tiny amount.

Kasmā cetaį¹, bhikkhave, mayā anakkhātaį¹? And why havenā€™t I explained it?

Na hetaį¹, bhikkhave, atthasaį¹hitaį¹ nādibrahmacariyakaį¹ na nibbidāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upasamāya na abhiƱƱāya na sambodhāya na nibbānāya saį¹vattati; Because itā€™s not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesnā€™t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

tasmā taį¹ mayā anakkhātaį¹. Thatā€™s why I havenā€™t explained it.

KiƱca, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaį¹? And what have I explained?

ā€˜Idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaį¹, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti mayā akkhātaį¹, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti mayā akkhātaį¹, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti mayā akkhātaį¹. I have explained: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

Kasmā cetaį¹, bhikkhave, mayā akkhātaį¹? And why have I explained this?

EtaƱhi, bhikkhave, atthasaį¹hitaį¹ etaį¹ ādibrahmacariyakaį¹ etaį¹ nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiƱƱāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saį¹vattati; Because itā€™s beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.

tasmā taį¹ mayā akkhātaį¹. Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve explained it.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
