SÄ«sapÄvanasutta In a Rosewood Forest
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati sÄ«sapÄvane. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ« in a rosewood forest.
Atha kho bhagavÄ parittÄni sÄ«sapÄpaį¹į¹Äni pÄį¹inÄ gahetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha picked up a few rosewood leaves in his hand and addressed the mendicants:
āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, āWhat do you think, mendicants?
katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹āWhich is more:
yÄni vÄ mayÄ parittÄni sÄ«sapÄpaį¹į¹Äni pÄį¹inÄ gahitÄni yadidaį¹ upari sÄ«sapÄvaneāti? the few leaves in my hand, or those in the forest above me?ā
āAppamattakÄni, bhante, bhagavatÄ parittÄni sÄ«sapÄpaį¹į¹Äni pÄį¹inÄ gahitÄni; āSir, the few leaves in your hand are a tiny amount.
atha kho etÄneva bahutarÄni yadidaį¹ upari sÄ«sapÄvaneāti. There are far more leaves in the forest above.ā
āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, etadeva bahutaraį¹ yaį¹ vo mayÄ abhiƱƱÄya anakkhÄtaį¹. āIn the same way, there is much more that I have directly known but have not explained to you. What I have explained is a tiny amount.
KasmÄ cetaį¹, bhikkhave, mayÄ anakkhÄtaį¹? And why havenāt I explained it?
Na hetaį¹, bhikkhave, atthasaį¹hitaį¹ nÄdibrahmacariyakaį¹ na nibbidÄya na virÄgÄya na nirodhÄya na upasamÄya na abhiƱƱÄya na sambodhÄya na nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati; Because itās not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesnāt lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
tasmÄ taį¹ mayÄ anakkhÄtaį¹. Thatās why I havenāt explained it.
KiƱca, bhikkhave, mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹? And what have I explained?
āIdaį¹ dukkhanāti, bhikkhave, mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹. I have explained: āThis is sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the origin of sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the cessation of sufferingā ā¦ āThis is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā.
KasmÄ cetaį¹, bhikkhave, mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹? And why have I explained this?
EtaƱhi, bhikkhave, atthasaį¹hitaį¹ etaį¹ Ädibrahmacariyakaį¹ etaį¹ nibbidÄya virÄgÄya nirodhÄya upasamÄya abhiƱƱÄya sambodhÄya nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati; Because itās beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.
tasmÄ taį¹ mayÄ akkhÄtaį¹. Thatās why Iāve explained it.
