Pāį¹‡asutta Living Creatures

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso yaį¹ imasmiį¹ jambudÄ«pe tiį¹‡akaį¹į¹hasākhāpalāsaį¹ tacchetvā ekajjhaį¹ saį¹hareyya; ā€œSuppose a person was to strip all the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in the Black Plum Tree Land, gather them together into one pile,

ekajjhaį¹ saį¹haritvā sÅ«laį¹ kareyya. and make them into stakes.

SÅ«laį¹ karitvā ye mahāsamudde mahantakā pāį¹‡Ä te mahantakesu sÅ«lesu āvuneyya, ye mahāsamudde majjhimakā pāį¹‡Ä te majjhimakesu sÅ«lesu āvuneyya, ye mahāsamudde sukhumakā pāį¹‡Ä te sukhumakesu sÅ«lesu āvuneyya. Then theyā€™d impale the large creatures in the ocean on large stakes; the medium-sized creatures on medium-sized stakes; and the small creatures on small stakes.

Apariyādinnā ca, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde oįø·Ärikā pāį¹‡Ä assu. They wouldnā€™t run out of sizable creatures in the ocean before

Atha imasmiį¹ jambudÄ«pe tiį¹‡akaį¹į¹hasākhāpalāsaį¹ parikkhayaį¹ pariyādānaį¹ gaccheyya. using up all the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in the Black Plum Tree Land.

Ito bahutarā kho, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde sukhumakā pāį¹‡Ä, ye na sukarā sÅ«lesu āvunituį¹. There are far more small creatures in the ocean than this, so it wouldnā€™t be feasible to impale them on stakes.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Sukhumattā, bhikkhave, attabhāvassa. Because of the small size of those life-forms.

Evaį¹ mahā kho, bhikkhave, apāyo. Thatā€™s how big the plane of loss is.

Evaį¹ mahantasmā kho, bhikkhave, apāyasmā parimutto diį¹į¹hisampanno puggalo ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. A person accomplished in view, exempt from that vast plane of loss, truly understands: ā€˜This is sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the origin of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the cessation of sufferingā€™ ā€¦ ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of sufferingā€™.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹ipadāā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
