PapÄtasutta A Cliff
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Atha kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then the Buddha said to the mendicants,
āÄyÄma, bhikkhave, yena paį¹ibhÄnakÅ«į¹o tenupasaį¹
kamissÄma divÄvihÄrÄyÄāti. āCome, mendicants, letās go to Inspiration Peak for the dayās meditation.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
Atha kho bhagavÄ sambahulehi bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ yena paį¹ibhÄnakÅ«į¹o tenupasaį¹
kami. Then the Buddha together with several mendicants went to Inspiration Peak.
AddasÄ kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu paį¹ibhÄnakÅ«į¹e mahantaį¹ papÄtaį¹. A certain mendicant saw the big cliff there
DisvÄna bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to the Buddha,
āmahÄ vatÄyaį¹, bhante, papÄto subhayÄnako, bhante, papÄto. āSir, that big cliff is really huge and scary.
Atthi nu kho, bhante, imamhÄ papÄtÄ aƱƱo papÄto mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti? Is there any other cliff bigger and scarier than this one?ā
āAtthi kho, bhikkhu, imamhÄ papÄtÄ aƱƱo papÄto mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti. āThere is, mendicant.ā
āKatamo pana, bhante, imamhÄ papÄtÄ aƱƱo papÄto mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti? āBut sir, what is it?ā
āYe hi keci, bhikkhave, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āMendicant, there are ascetics and brahmins who donāt truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

khÄresu abhiramanti. They take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.
