Papātasutta A Cliff

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain.

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to the mendicants,

ā€œÄyāma, bhikkhave, yena paį¹­ibhānakÅ«į¹­o tenupasaį¹…kamissāma divāvihārāyāā€ti. ā€œCome, mendicants, letā€™s go to Inspiration Peak for the dayā€™s meditation.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Atha kho bhagavā sambahulehi bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ yena paį¹­ibhānakÅ«į¹­o tenupasaį¹…kami. Then the Buddha together with several mendicants went to Inspiration Peak.

Addasā kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu paį¹­ibhānakÅ«į¹­e mahantaį¹ papātaį¹. A certain mendicant saw the big cliff there

Disvāna bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to the Buddha,

ā€œmahā vatāyaį¹, bhante, papāto subhayānako, bhante, papāto. ā€œSir, that big cliff is really huge and scary.

Atthi nu kho, bhante, imamhā papātā aƱƱo papāto mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cāā€ti? Is there any other cliff bigger and scarier than this one?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, bhikkhu, imamhā papātā aƱƱo papāto mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cāā€ti. ā€œThere is, mendicant.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, imamhā papātā aƱƱo papāto mahantataro ca bhayānakataro cāā€ti? ā€œBut sir, what is it?ā€

ā€œYe hi keci, bhikkhave, samaį¹‡Ä vā brāhmaį¹‡Ä vā ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhasamudayoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhoā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti, ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti, ā€œMendicant, there are ascetics and brahmins who donā€™t truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

te jātisaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiramanti, jarāsaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiramanti, maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiramanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiramanti. They take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

Te jātisaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiratā jarāsaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiratā maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiratā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu abhiratā jātisaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharonti, jarāsaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharonti, maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharonti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharonti. Since they take pleasure in such choices, they continue to make them.

Te jātisaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharitvā jarāsaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharitvā maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharitvā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre abhisaį¹…kharitvā jātipapātampi papatanti, jarāpapātampi papatanti, maraį¹‡apapātampi papatanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsapapātampi papatanti. Having made choices that lead to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, they fall down the cliff of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

Te na parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. Theyā€™re not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

ā€˜Na parimuccanti dukkhasmāā€™ti vadāmi. Theyā€™re not freed from suffering, I say.

Ye ca kho keci, bhikkhave, samaį¹‡Ä vā brāhmaį¹‡Ä vā ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānanti ā€¦peā€¦ There are ascetics and brahmins who truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.

ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānanti, te jātisaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu nābhiramanti, jarāsaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu nābhiramanti, maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu nābhiramanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu nābhiramanti. They donā€™t take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

Te jātisaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu anabhiratā, jarāsaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu anabhiratā, maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu anabhiratā, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikesu saį¹…khāresu anabhiratā, jātisaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre nābhisaį¹…kharonti, jarāsaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre nābhisaį¹…kharonti, maraį¹‡asaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre nābhisaį¹…kharonti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsasaį¹vattanikepi saį¹…khāre nābhisaį¹…kharonti. Since they donā€™t take pleasure in such choices, they stop making them.

Having stopped making choices that lead to rebirth, old age, and death, to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, they donā€™t fall down the cliff of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

Te parimuccanti jātiyā jarāya maraį¹‡ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi. Theyā€™re freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

ā€˜Parimuccanti dukkhasmāā€™ti vadāmi. Theyā€™re freed from suffering, I say.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ā€˜idaį¹ dukkhanā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yo ā€¦peā€¦ ā€˜ayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadāā€™ti yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
