AndhakÄrasutta Darkness
āAtthi, bhikkhave, lokantarikÄ aghÄ asaį¹vutÄ andhakÄrÄ andhakÄratimisÄ, yatthamimesaį¹ candimasÅ«riyÄnaį¹ evaį¹mahiddhikÄnaį¹ evaį¹ mahÄnubhÄvÄnaį¹ ÄbhÄya nÄnubhontÄ«āti. āMendicants, the boundless void of interstellar space is so utterly dark that even the light of the moon and the sun, so mighty and powerful, makes no impression.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, one of the mendicants asked the Buddha,
āmahÄ vata so, bhante, andhakÄro, sumahÄ vata so, bhante, andhakÄro. āSir, that darkness really is mighty, so very mighty.
Atthi nu kho, bhante, etamhÄ andhakÄrÄ aƱƱo andhakÄro mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti? Is there any other darkness more mighty and terrifying than this one?ā
āAtthi kho, bhikkhu, etamhÄ andhakÄrÄ aƱƱo andhakÄro mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti. āThere is, mendicant.ā
āKatamo pana, bhante, etamhÄ andhakÄrÄ aƱƱo andhakÄro mahantataro ca bhayÄnakataro cÄāti? āBut sir, what is it?ā
āYe hi keci, bhikkhu, samaį¹Ä vÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä vÄ āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti ā¦peā¦ āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, āThere are ascetics and brahmins who donāt truly understand about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path.
te jÄtisaį¹vattanikesu saį¹
khÄresu abhiramanti ā¦peā¦ They take pleasure in choices that lead to rebirth ā¦
abhiratÄ ā¦peā¦ abhisaį¹
kharonti ā¦peā¦ They continue to make such choices ā¦
abhisaį¹
kharitvÄ jÄtandhakÄrampi papatanti, jarandhakÄrampi papatanti, maraį¹andhakÄrampi papatanti, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupÄyÄsandhakÄrampi papatanti. Having made such choices, they fall into the darkness of rebirth, old age, and death, of sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.
Te na parimuccanti jÄtiyÄ jarÄya maraį¹ena sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upÄyÄsehi. Theyāre not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.
