Pokkharaį¹‡Ä«sutta A Lotus Pond

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, pokkharaį¹‡Ä« paƱƱāsayojanāni āyāmena, paƱƱāsayojanāni vitthārena, paƱƱāsayojanāni ubbedhena, puį¹‡į¹‡Ä udakassa samatittikā kākapeyyā. ā€œMendicants, suppose there was a lotus pond that was fifty leagues long, fifty leagues wide, and fifty leagues deep, full to the brim so a crow could drink from it.

Tato puriso kusaggena udakaį¹ uddhareyya. Then a person would pick up some water on the tip of a blade of grass.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹ā€”yaį¹ vā kusaggena ubbhataį¹, yaį¹ vā pokkharaį¹‡iyā udakanā€ti? Which is more: the water on the tip of the blade of grass, or the water in the lotus pond?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”pokkharaį¹‡iyā udakaį¹; appamattakaį¹ kusaggena udakaį¹ ubbhataį¹. ā€œSir, the water in the lotus pond is certainly more. The water on the tip of a blade of grass is tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhāgampi na upeti pokkharaį¹‡iyā udakaį¹ upanidhāya kusaggena udakaį¹ ubbhatanā€ti. Compared to the water in the lotus pond, it doesnā€™t count, thereā€™s no comparison, itā€™s not worth a fraction.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œIn the same way, for a noble disciple ā€¦

yogo karaį¹‡Ä«yoā€ti. Thatā€™s why you should practice meditation ā€¦ā€
