Paį¹­hamamahāsamuddasutta The Ocean (1st)

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso mahāsamuddato dve vā tÄ«į¹‡i vā udakaphusitāni uddharitāni. ā€œMendicants, suppose a man was to draw up two or three drops of water from the ocean.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹ā€”yāni dve vā tÄ«į¹‡i vā udakaphusitāni ubbhatāni, yaį¹ vā mahāsamudde udakanā€ti? Which is more: the two or three drops drawn out or the water in the ocean?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹ā€”mahāsamudde udakaį¹; appamattakāni dve vā tÄ«į¹‡i vā udakaphusitāni ubbhatāni. ā€œSir, the water in the ocean is certainly more. The two or three drops drawn out are tiny.

Saį¹…khampi na upenti, upanidhampi na upenti, kalabhāgampi na upenti mahāsamudde udakaį¹ upanidhāya dve vā tÄ«į¹‡i vā udakaphusitāni ubbhatānÄ«ā€ti. Compared to the water in the ocean, it doesnā€™t count, thereā€™s no comparison, itā€™s not worth a fraction.ā€
