58. Ovādasikkhāpada The training rule on the instruction

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhārāme. At one time when the Buddha was staying in the Sakyan country in the Banyan Tree Monastery at Kapilavatthu,

Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaį¹ upasaį¹…kamitvā chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovadanti. the monks from the group of six went to the nunsā€™ dwelling place to instruct the nuns from the group of six.

Bhikkhuniyo chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo etadavocuį¹ā€”Soon afterwards other nuns said to those nuns,

ā€œethāyye, ovādaį¹ gamissāmāā€ti. ā€œCome, Venerables, letā€™s go to the instruction.ā€

ā€œYampi mayaį¹, ayye, gaccheyyāma ovādassa kāraį¹‡Ä, ayyā chabbaggiyā idheva āgantvā amhe ovadantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThereā€™s no need. The monks from the group of six came and instructed us right here.ā€

Yā tā bhikkhuniyo appicchā ā€¦peā€¦ tā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācentiā€”The nuns of few desires complained and criticized them,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovādaį¹ na gacchissantÄ«ā€ti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œHow could the nuns from the group of six not go to the instruction?ā€ ā€¦

ā€œsaccaį¹ kira, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovādaį¹ na gacchantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs it true, monks, that those nuns didnā€™t do this?ā€

ā€œSaccaį¹, bhagavāā€ti. ā€œItā€™s true, Sir.ā€

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ The Buddha rebuked them ā€¦

kathaƱhi nāma, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovādaį¹ na gacchissanti. ā€œHow could the nuns from the group of six not do this?

Netaį¹, bhikkhave, appasannānaį¹ vā pasādāya ā€¦peā€¦ This will affect peopleā€™s confidence ā€¦ā€ ā€¦

evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaį¹ sikkhāpadaį¹ uddisantuā€”ā€œAnd, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:

ā€œYā pana bhikkhunÄ« ovādāya vā saį¹vāsāya vā na gaccheyya, pācittiyanā€ti. ā€˜If a nun does not go to the instruction or to a formal meeting of the community, she commits an offense entailing confession.ā€™ā€

Yā panāti A:

yā yādisā ā€¦peā€¦ whoever ā€¦

bhikkhunīti Nun:

ā€¦peā€¦ ayaį¹ imasmiį¹ atthe adhippetā bhikkhunÄ«ti. ā€¦ The nun who has been given the full ordination in unanimity by both Sanghas through a legal procedure consisting of one motion and three announcements that is irreversible and fit to standā€”this sort of nun is meant in this case.

Ovādo nāma The instruction:

aį¹į¹ha garudhammā. the eight important principles.

Saį¹vāso nāma The community:

ekakammaį¹ ekuddeso samasikkhatā. joint legal procedures, a joint recitation, the same training.

Ovādāya vā saį¹vāsāya vā na gacchissāmÄ«ti dhuraį¹ nikkhittamatte āpatti pācittiyassa. If she thinks, ā€œI wonā€™t go to the instruction or to formal meetings of the community,ā€ then by the mere fact of abandoning her duty, she commits an offense entailing confession.

Anāpattiā€”There is no offense:

sati antarāye, if there is an obstacle;

pariyesitvā dutiyikaį¹ bhikkhuniį¹ na labhati, if she searches for a companion nun, but does not find one;

gilānāya, if she is sick;

āpadāsu, if there is an emergency;

ummattikāya, if she is insane;

ādikammikāyāti. if she is the first offender.

Aį¹į¹hamasikkhāpadaį¹ niį¹į¹hitaį¹. The eighth training rule is finished.
