Tena samayena buddho bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time when the Buddha was staying at KosambÄ« in Ghositaās Monastery,
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ channo anÄcÄraį¹ Äcarati. Venerable Channa was misbehaving.
BhikkhÅ« evamÄhaį¹suāThe monks would tell him,
āmÄvuso channa, evarÅ«paį¹ akÄsi. āChanna, donāt do that;
Netaį¹ kappatÄ«āti. itās not allowable,ā
So anÄdariyaį¹ paį¹icca karotiyeva. and he just did it again out of disrespect.
Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchÄ ā¦peā¦ te ujjhÄyanti khiyyanti vipÄcentiāThe monks of few desires complained and criticized him,
ākathaƱhi nÄma ÄyasmÄ channo anÄdariyaį¹ karissatÄ«āti ā¦peā¦ āHow can Venerable Channa act disrespectfully?ā ā¦
āsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, channa, anÄdariyaį¹ karosÄ«āti? āIs it true, Channa, that you do this?ā
āSaccaį¹, bhagavÄāti. āItās true, sir.ā
Vigarahi buddho bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ The Buddha rebuked him ā¦
kathaƱhi nÄma tvaį¹, moghapurisa, anÄdariyaį¹ karissasi. āFoolish man, how can you do this?
Netaį¹, moghapurisa, appasannÄnaį¹ vÄ pasÄdÄya ā¦peā¦ This will affect peopleās confidence ā¦ā ā¦
evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaį¹ sikkhÄpadaį¹ uddiseyyÄthaāāAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:
āAnÄdariye pÄcittiyanāti. āIf a monk is disrespectful, he commits an offense entailing confession.āā
AnÄdariyaį¹ nÄma Disrespectful:
dve anÄdariyÄniā puggalÄnÄdariyaƱca dhammÄnÄdariyaƱca. there are two kinds of disrespect: disrespect for the person and disrespect for the rule.
PuggalÄnÄdariyaį¹ nÄma Disrespect for the person:
upasampannena paƱƱattena vuccamÄnoā āayaį¹ ukkhittako vÄ vambhito vÄ garahito vÄ, imassa vacanaį¹ akataį¹ bhavissatÄ«āti anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti pÄcittiyassa. if, when corrected by one who is fully ordained about a rule that has been laid down, he thinks, āTheyāve been ejected,ā āTheyāve been reproved,ā or āTheyāve been censured,ā and then, āI wonāt do what they say,ā and he acts disrespectfully, then he commits an offense entailing confession.
DhammÄnÄdariyaį¹ nÄma Disrespect for the rule:
upasampannena paƱƱattena vuccamÄnoā ākathÄyaį¹ nasseyya vÄ vinasseyya vÄ antaradhÄyeyya vÄā, taį¹ vÄ na sikkhitukÄmo anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti pÄcittiyassa. if, when corrected by one who is fully ordained about a rule that has been laid down, he thinks, āWhat can be done so that this rule is lost?ā āWhat can be done so that it perishes?ā or āWhat can be done so that it disappears?ā or he does not want to train in that rule, and he acts disrespectfully, then he commits an offense entailing confession.
Upasampanne upasampannasaƱƱī anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti pÄcittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, and he perceives them as such, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.
Upasampanne vematiko anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti pÄcittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.
Upasampanne anupasampannasaƱƱī anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti pÄcittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, but he does not perceive them as such, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.
ApaƱƱattena vuccamÄnoāIf, when corrected about something that has not been laid down, he thinks,
āidaį¹ na sallekhÄya na dhutatthÄya na pÄsÄdikatÄya na apacayÄya na vÄ«riyÄrambhÄya saį¹vattatÄ«āti anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti dukkaį¹assa. āThis isnāt conducive to self-effacement,ā āThis isnāt conducive to ascetic practices,ā āThis isnāt conducive to being inspiring,ā āThis isnāt conducive to a reduction in things,ā or āThis isnāt conducive to being energetic,ā and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Anupasampannena paƱƱattena vÄ apaƱƱattena vÄ vuccamÄnoāIf, when corrected by one who is not fully ordained, whether or not it has been laid down, he thinks,
āidaį¹ na sallekhÄya na dhutatthÄya na pÄsÄdikatÄya na apacayÄya na vÄ«riyÄrambhÄya saį¹vattatÄ«āti anÄdariyaį¹ karoti, Äpatti dukkaį¹assa. āThis isnāt conducive to self-effacement,ā āThis isnāt conducive to ascetic practices,ā āThis isnāt conducive to being inspiring,ā āThis isnāt conducive to a reduction in things,ā or āThis isnāt conducive to being energetic,ā and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anupasampanne vematiko, Äpatti dukkaį¹assa. If the other person is not fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Anupasampanne anupasampannasaƱƱī, Äpatti dukkaį¹assa. If the other person is not fully ordained, and he does not perceive them as such, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.
AnÄpattiāThere is no offense:
āevaį¹ amhÄkaį¹ ÄcariyÄnaį¹ uggaho paripucchÄāti bhaį¹ati, if he says, āThis is how we were taught and tested by our teachers;ā
ummattakassa, if he is insane;
ÄdikammikassÄti. if he is the first offender.
AnÄdariyasikkhÄpadaį¹ niį¹į¹hitaį¹ catutthaį¹. The training rule on disrespect, the fourth, is finished.
