54. Anādariyasikkhāpada 54. The training rule on disrespect

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time when the Buddha was staying at KosambÄ« in Ghositaā€™s Monastery,

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā channo anācāraį¹ ācarati. Venerable Channa was misbehaving.

BhikkhÅ« evamāhaį¹suā€”The monks would tell him,

ā€œmāvuso channa, evarÅ«paį¹ akāsi. ā€œChanna, donā€™t do that;

Netaį¹ kappatÄ«ā€ti. itā€™s not allowable,ā€

So anādariyaį¹ paį¹­icca karotiyeva. and he just did it again out of disrespect.

Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchā ā€¦peā€¦ te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācentiā€”The monks of few desires complained and criticized him,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma āyasmā channo anādariyaį¹ karissatÄ«ā€ti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œHow can Venerable Channa act disrespectfully?ā€ ā€¦

ā€œsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, channa, anādariyaį¹ karosÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs it true, Channa, that you do this?ā€

ā€œSaccaį¹, bhagavāā€ti. ā€œItā€™s true, sir.ā€

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ The Buddha rebuked him ā€¦

kathaƱhi nāma tvaį¹, moghapurisa, anādariyaį¹ karissasi. ā€œFoolish man, how can you do this?

Netaį¹, moghapurisa, appasannānaį¹ vā pasādāya ā€¦peā€¦ This will affect peopleā€™s confidence ā€¦ā€ ā€¦

evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaį¹ sikkhāpadaį¹ uddiseyyāthaā€”ā€œAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

ā€œAnādariye pācittiyanā€ti. ā€˜If a monk is disrespectful, he commits an offense entailing confession.ā€™ā€

Anādariyaį¹ nāma Disrespectful:

dve anādariyāniā€” puggalānādariyaƱca dhammānādariyaƱca. there are two kinds of disrespect: disrespect for the person and disrespect for the rule.

Puggalānādariyaį¹ nāma Disrespect for the person:

upasampannena paƱƱattena vuccamānoā€” ā€œayaį¹ ukkhittako vā vambhito vā garahito vā, imassa vacanaį¹ akataį¹ bhavissatÄ«ā€ti anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti pācittiyassa. if, when corrected by one who is fully ordained about a rule that has been laid down, he thinks, ā€œTheyā€™ve been ejected,ā€ ā€œTheyā€™ve been reproved,ā€ or ā€œTheyā€™ve been censured,ā€ and then, ā€œI wonā€™t do what they say,ā€ and he acts disrespectfully, then he commits an offense entailing confession.

Dhammānādariyaį¹ nāma Disrespect for the rule:

upasampannena paƱƱattena vuccamānoā€” ā€œkathāyaį¹ nasseyya vā vinasseyya vā antaradhāyeyya vāā€, taį¹ vā na sikkhitukāmo anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti pācittiyassa. if, when corrected by one who is fully ordained about a rule that has been laid down, he thinks, ā€œWhat can be done so that this rule is lost?ā€ ā€œWhat can be done so that it perishes?ā€ or ā€œWhat can be done so that it disappears?ā€ or he does not want to train in that rule, and he acts disrespectfully, then he commits an offense entailing confession.

Upasampanne upasampannasaƱƱī anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti pācittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, and he perceives them as such, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.

Upasampanne vematiko anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti pācittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.

Upasampanne anupasampannasaƱƱī anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti pācittiyassa. If the other person is fully ordained, but he does not perceive them as such, and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense entailing confession.

ApaƱƱattena vuccamānoā€”If, when corrected about something that has not been laid down, he thinks,

ā€œidaį¹ na sallekhāya na dhutatthāya na pāsādikatāya na apacayāya na vÄ«riyārambhāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€ti anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti dukkaį¹­assa. ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to self-effacement,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to ascetic practices,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to being inspiring,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to a reduction in things,ā€ or ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to being energetic,ā€ and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anupasampannena paƱƱattena vā apaƱƱattena vā vuccamānoā€”If, when corrected by one who is not fully ordained, whether or not it has been laid down, he thinks,

ā€œidaį¹ na sallekhāya na dhutatthāya na pāsādikatāya na apacayāya na vÄ«riyārambhāya saį¹vattatÄ«ā€ti anādariyaį¹ karoti, āpatti dukkaį¹­assa. ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to self-effacement,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to ascetic practices,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to being inspiring,ā€ ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to a reduction in things,ā€ or ā€œThis isnā€™t conducive to being energetic,ā€ and he acts disrespectfully, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anupasampanne upasampannasaƱƱī āpatti dukkaį¹­assa. If the other person is not fully ordained, but he perceives them as such, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anupasampanne vematiko, āpatti dukkaį¹­assa. If the other person is not fully ordained, but he is unsure of it, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anupasampanne anupasampannasaƱƱī, āpatti dukkaį¹­assa. If the other person is not fully ordained, and he does not perceive them as such, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anāpattiā€”There is no offense:

ā€œevaį¹ amhākaį¹ ācariyānaį¹ uggaho paripucchāā€ti bhaį¹‡ati, if he says, ā€œThis is how we were taught and tested by our teachers;ā€

ummattakassa, if he is insane;

ādikammikassāti. if he is the first offender.

Anādariyasikkhāpadaį¹ niį¹­į¹­hitaį¹ catutthaį¹. The training rule on disrespect, the fourth, is finished.
