Tena samayena buddho bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time when the Buddha was staying at KosambÄ« in Ghositaās Monastery,
Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱatarena brÄhmaį¹ena saį¹
ghassa payopÄnaį¹ paį¹iyattaį¹ hoti. a brahmin prepared a milk drink for the Sangha.
BhikkhÅ« surusurukÄrakaį¹ khÄ«raį¹ pivanti. The monks slurped while drinking the milk.
AƱƱataro naį¹apubbako bhikkhu evamÄhaāA monk who was previously an entertainer made a joke of it, saying,
āsabboyaį¹ maƱƱe saį¹
gho sÄ«tÄ«katoāti. āItās as if the whole Sangha is cooled.ā
Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchÄ ā¦peā¦ te ujjhÄyanti khiyyanti vipÄcentiāThe monks of few desires complained and criticized him,
ākathaƱhi nÄma bhikkhu saį¹
ghaį¹ Ärabbha davaį¹ karissatÄ«āti ā¦peā¦ āHow could a monk joke about the Sangha?ā ā¦
āsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, bhikkhu, saį¹
ghaį¹ Ärabbha davaį¹ akÄsÄ«āti? āIs it true, monk, that you did this?ā
āSaccaį¹, bhagavÄāti. āItās true, sir.ā
Vigarahi buddho bhagavÄ ā¦peā¦ The Buddha rebuked him ā¦
kathaƱhi nÄma tvaį¹, moghapurisa, saį¹
ghaį¹ Ärabbha davaį¹ karissasi. āFoolish man, how could you do this?
Netaį¹, moghapurisa, appasannÄnaį¹ vÄ pasÄdÄya ā¦peā¦ This will affect peopleās confidence ā¦ā
vigarahitvÄ ā¦peā¦ After rebuking him ā¦
dhammiį¹ kathaį¹ katvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesiāhe gave a teaching and addressed the monks:
āna, bhikkhave, buddhaį¹ vÄ dhammaį¹ vÄ saį¹
ghaį¹ vÄ Ärabbha davo kÄtabbo. āMonks, you should not joke about the Buddha, the Teaching, or the Sangha.
Yo kareyya, Äpatti dukkaį¹assÄāti. If you do, you commit an offense of wrong conduct.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ taį¹ bhikkhuį¹ anekapariyÄyena vigarahitvÄ dubbharatÄya ā¦peā¦ After rebuking that monk in many ways, the Buddha spoke in dispraise of being difficult to support ā¦
evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaį¹ sikkhÄpadaį¹ uddiseyyÄthaāāAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:
āNa surusurukÄrakaį¹ bhuƱjissÄmÄ«ti sikkhÄ karaį¹Ä«yÄāti. āāI will not slurp while eating,ā this is how you should train.āā
Na surusurukÄrakaį¹ bhuƱjitabbaį¹. One should not slurp while eating.
Yo anÄdariyaį¹ paį¹icca surusurukÄrakaį¹ bhuƱjati, Äpatti dukkaį¹assa. If a monk, out of disrespect, slurps while eating, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.
AnÄpattiāThere is no offense:
asaƱcicca ā¦peā¦ if it is unintentional;
ÄdikammikassÄti. if he is the first offender.
Paį¹hamasikkhÄpadaį¹ niį¹į¹hitaį¹. The first training rule is finished.
