Tena samayena buddho bhagavā kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositārāme. At one time when the Buddha was staying at KosambÄ« in Ghositaā€™s Monastery,

Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱatarena brāhmaį¹‡ena saį¹…ghassa payopānaį¹ paį¹iyattaį¹ hoti. a brahmin prepared a milk drink for the Sangha.

BhikkhÅ« surusurukārakaį¹ khÄ«raį¹ pivanti. The monks slurped while drinking the milk.

AƱƱataro naį¹apubbako bhikkhu evamāhaā€”A monk who was previously an entertainer made a joke of it, saying,

ā€œsabboyaį¹ maƱƱe saį¹…gho sÄ«tÄ«katoā€ti. ā€œItā€™s as if the whole Sangha is cooled.ā€

Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchā ā€¦peā€¦ te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācentiā€”The monks of few desires complained and criticized him,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma bhikkhu saį¹…ghaį¹ ārabbha davaį¹ karissatÄ«ā€ti ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œHow could a monk joke about the Sangha?ā€ ā€¦

ā€œsaccaį¹ kira tvaį¹, bhikkhu, saį¹…ghaį¹ ārabbha davaį¹ akāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs it true, monk, that you did this?ā€

ā€œSaccaį¹, bhagavāā€ti. ā€œItā€™s true, sir.ā€

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ The Buddha rebuked him ā€¦

kathaƱhi nāma tvaį¹, moghapurisa, saį¹…ghaį¹ ārabbha davaį¹ karissasi. ā€œFoolish man, how could you do this?

Netaį¹, moghapurisa, appasannānaį¹ vā pasādāya ā€¦peā€¦ This will affect peopleā€™s confidence ā€¦ā€

vigarahitvā ā€¦peā€¦ After rebuking him ā€¦

dhammiį¹ kathaį¹ katvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesiā€”he gave a teaching and addressed the monks:

ā€œna, bhikkhave, buddhaį¹ vā dhammaį¹ vā saį¹…ghaį¹ vā ārabbha davo kātabbo. ā€œMonks, you should not joke about the Buddha, the Teaching, or the Sangha.

Yo kareyya, āpatti dukkaį¹assāā€ti. If you do, you commit an offense of wrong conduct.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā taį¹ bhikkhuį¹ anekapariyāyena vigarahitvā dubbharatāya ā€¦peā€¦ After rebuking that monk in many ways, the Buddha spoke in dispraise of being difficult to support ā€¦

evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaį¹ sikkhāpadaį¹ uddiseyyāthaā€”ā€œAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

ā€œNa surusurukārakaį¹ bhuƱjissāmÄ«ti sikkhā karaį¹‡Ä«yāā€ti. ā€˜ā€œI will not slurp while eating,ā€ this is how you should train.ā€™ā€

Na surusurukārakaį¹ bhuƱjitabbaį¹. One should not slurp while eating.

Yo anādariyaį¹ paį¹icca surusurukārakaį¹ bhuƱjati, āpatti dukkaį¹assa. If a monk, out of disrespect, slurps while eating, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anāpattiā€”There is no offense:

asaƱcicca ā€¦peā€¦ if it is unintentional;

ādikammikassāti. if he is the first offender.

Paį¹hamasikkhāpadaį¹ niį¹į¹hitaį¹. The first training rule is finished.
