3. Samuṭṭhānasīsasaṅkhepa The thirteen groups of originations of offenses

1. Samuṭṭhānassuddāna Summary of originations

Aniccā sabbe saṅkhārā, “All phenomena are impermanent,

dukkhānattā ca saṅkhatā; And suffering, nonself, made up;

Nibbānañceva paññatti, Indeed the description extinguishment,

anattā iti nicchayā. Is the conviction about nonself.

Buddhacande anuppanne, When the Buddha moon has not appeared,

buddhādicce anuggate; When the Buddha sun has not yet risen;

Tesaṁ sabhāgadhammānaṁ, Then even the name is not known,

nāmamattaṁ na nāyati. Of the things that are the same as those. This renders tesaṁ sabhāgadhammānaṁ. The point seems to be that the names anicca, etc., mentioned above, are not even known if a Buddha does not arise.

Dukkaraṁ vividhaṁ katvā, Having done many difficult things,

pūrayitvāna pāramī; Having fulfilled the perfections;

Uppajjanti mahāvīrā, The Great Heroes emerge,

cakkhubhūtā sabrahmake. Endowed with vision, in this world with its supreme beings. Reading sabrahmake as a shorthand for sabrahmake loke.

Te desayanti saddhammaṁ, They instruct in the True Teaching,

dukkhahāniṁ sukhāvahaṁ; That ends suffering and brings happiness;

Aṅgīraso sakyamuni, Angīrasa, the Sakyan Sage,

sabbabhūtānukampako. Who has compassion for all beings.

Sabbasattuttamo sīho, The best of all creatures, the lion,

piṭake tīṇi desayi; Taught the three Collections:

Suttantamabhidhammañca, The Discourses, and the Philosophy,

vinayañca mahāguṇaṁ. And the Monastic Law, of great quality.

Evaṁ nīyati saddhammo, Thus the true Teaching carries on,

vinayo yadi tiṭṭhati; So long as the Monastic Law remains;

Ubhato ca vibhaṅgāni, As well as both Analyses,

khandhakā yā ca mātikā. The Chapters, and the Key Terms—

Mālā suttaguṇeneva, A garland bound,

parivārena ganthitā; By the quality of the string of the Compendium;

Tasseva parivārassa, In this very Compendium,

samuṭṭhānaṁ niyato kataṁ. Originations are determined.

Sambhedaṁ nidānañcaññaṁ, Combination and source are another,

sutte dissanti upari; Which are pointed out in the list below.

Tasmā sikkhe parivāraṁ, Therefore, they should train in the Compendium,

dhammakāmo supesaloti. Those who love the Teaching and are highly virtuous.”

2. Terasasamuṭṭhāna The thirteen originations

Vibhaṅge dvīsu paññattaṁ, “Laid down in the two analyses,

uddisanti uposathe; They recite on the observance day;

Pavakkhāmi samuṭṭhānaṁ, I will declare the origination,

yathāñāyaṁ suṇātha me. According to the method: listen to me.

Pārājikaṁ yaṁ paṭhamaṁ, The first offense entailing expulsion, Starting with the first offense entailing expulsion, here are the headings for the thirteen categories of origination, that is, offenses that are like the first pārājika, etc.

dutiyañca tato paraṁ; And then the second;

Sañcarittānubhāsanañca, Matchmaking and pressing,

atirekañca cīvaraṁ. And an extra robe.

Lomāni padasodhammo, Wool, memorizing the Teaching,

bhūtaṁ saṁvidhānena ca; True, and by arrangement;

Theyyadesanacorī ca, Thieves, teaching, and female criminal,

ananuññātāya terasa. Lack of permission is the thirteenth.

Terasete samuṭṭhāna- These are the thirteen originations,

nayā viññūhi cintitā; The method thought out by the wise;

Ekekasmiṁ samuṭṭhāne, In regard to a single origination,

sadisā idha dissare. Those that are alike are shown here.

2.1. Paṭhamapārājikasamuṭṭhāna 1. Originations like the first offense entailing expulsion

Methunaṁ sukkasaṁsaggo, Sexual intercourse, semen, contact, Bu Pj 1, and Bu Ss 1 and 2. This and the following rule identifications are all taken from the commentary.

aniyatā paṭhamikā; The first undetermined offense;

Pubbūpaparipācitā, Arrived before, had prepared, Bu Pc 16 and 29.

raho bhikkhuniyā saha. With a nun in private. Bu Pc 30.

Sabhojane raho dve ca, Lustful, and two in private, Bu Pc 43, 44, and 45.

aṅguli udake hasaṁ; Finger, playing in the water; Bu Pc 51 and 52.

Pahāre uggire ceva, Should he hit, and should he raise, Bu Pc 74 and 75.

tepaññāsā ca sekhiyā. And fifty-three on training. Sk 1-10, 15-36, 38-42, 44-56, and 73-75.

Adhakkhagāmāvassutā, Below the collar bone, village, lustful, Bi Pj 5, and Bi Ss 3 and 5.

talamaṭṭhañca suddhikā; Palm, and dildo, cleaning; Bi Pc 3, 4, and 5.

Vassaṁvuṭṭhā ca ovādaṁ, And completed the rainy-season residence, instruction, Bi Pc 40 and 58.

nānubandhe pavattiniṁ. If she should not follow her mentor. Bi Pc 69.

Chasattati ime sikkhā, These seventy-six training rules,

kāyamānasikā katā; Done from body and mind;

Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, All have one origination,

paṭhamaṁ pārājikaṁ yathā. Like the first offense entailing expulsion.

Paṭhamapārājikasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the first offense entailing expulsion are finished.

2.2. Dutiyapārājikasamuṭṭhāna 2. Originations like the second offense entailing expulsion

Adinnaṁ viggahuttari, Not given, form, super, Bu Pj 2, 3, and 4.

duṭṭhullā attakāminaṁ; Indecent, his own needs; Bu Ss 3 and 4.

Amūlā aññabhāgiyā, Groundless, unrelated, Bu Ss 8 and 9.

aniyatā dutiyikā. The second undetermined offense.

Acchinde pariṇāmane, Should he take back, in intending, Bu Np 25 and 30.

musā omasapesuṇā; Falsely, abusive, malicious talebearing; Bu Pc 1, 2, and 3.

Duṭṭhullā pathavīkhaṇe, Grave offense, should he dig the earth, Bu Pc 9 and 10.

bhūtaṁ aññāya ujjhāpe. Plant, with evasion, should he complain. Bu Pc 11, 12, and 13.

Nikkaḍḍhanaṁ siñcanañca, Throwing out, and sprinkling, Bu Pc 17 and 20.

āmisahetu bhuttāvī; For the sake of worldly gain, who has finished his meal; Bu Pc 24 and 36.

Ehi anādari bhiṁsā, Come, disrespect, scaring, Bu Pc 42, 54, and 55.

apanidhe ca jīvitaṁ. And should he hide, life. Bu Pc 60 and 61.

Jānaṁ sappāṇakaṁ kammaṁ, That one knows contains living beings, legal procedure, Bu Pc 62 and 63.

ūnasaṁvāsanāsanā; Less than, doing formal meetings with, expulsion; Bu Pc 65, 69, and 70.

Sahadhammikavilekhā, Legitimately, annoyance, Bu Pc 71 and 72.

moho amūlakena ca. Deception, and with groundless. Bu Pc 73 and 76.

Kukkuccaṁ dhammikaṁ cīvaraṁ datvā, Anxious, legitimate, gives out a robe, Bu Pc 77, 79, and 81.

Pariṇāmeyya puggale; Should he divert to an individual; Bu Pc 82.

Kiṁ te akālaṁ acchinde, What to you, out-of-season, should she take back, Bi Ss 6, and Bi Np 2 and 3.

Duggahī nirayena ca. Because of misunderstanding, and with hell. Bi Pc 18 and 19.

Gaṇaṁ vibhaṅgaṁ dubbalaṁ, Group, distribution, uncertain, Bi Pc 26, 27, and 29.

kathināphāsupassayaṁ; Robe season, ill at ease, dwelling place; Bi Pc 30, 33, and 35.

Akkosacaṇḍī maccharī, Abuse, furious, keep for herself, Bi Pc 52, 53, and 55.

gabbhinī ca pāyantiyā. And pregnant woman, breastfeeding woman. Bi Pc 61 and 62.

Dvevassaṁ sikkhā saṅghena, Two years’ training, by the Sangha, Bi Pc 63 and 64.

tayo ceva gihīgatā; And three on married girls; Bi Pc 65, 66, and 67.

Kumāribhūtā tisso ca, And three on unmarried women, Bi Pc 71, 72, and 73.

ūnadvādasasammatā. Less than twelve, without approval. Bi Pc 74 and 75.

Alaṁ tāva sokāvāsaṁ, Enough, difficult to live with, Bi Pc 76 and 79.

chandā anuvassā ca dve; Consent, and every year, two; Bi Pc 81, 82, and 83.

Sikkhāpadā sattatime, These seventy training rules, All versions of the Pali have seventy at this point, yet counting according to the commentary, I get seventy-one. Seventy-one does, in fact, seem to be required so as to account for all the rules in the two Pātimokkhas.

samuṭṭhānā tikā katā. Have three originations:

Kāyacittena na vācā, From body and mind, not from speech,

vācācittaṁ na kāyikaṁ; Or from speech and mind, not from body;

Tīhi dvārehi jāyanti, Or they are produced from the three doors,

pārājikaṁ dutiyaṁ yathā. As is the second offense entailing expulsion.

Dutiyapārājikasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the second offense entailing expulsion are finished.

2.3. Sañcarittasamuṭṭhāna 3. Originations like the offense for matchmaking

Sañcarī kuṭi vihāro, Matchmaking, hut, dwelling, Bu Ss 5, 6, and 7.

dhovanañca paṭiggaho; And washing, receiving; Bu Np 4 and 5.

Viññattuttari abhihaṭṭhuṁ, Asking, invites to take more than, Bu Np 6 and 7.

ubhinnaṁ dūtakena ca. Of both, and with messenger. Bu Np 8, 9 and 10.

Kosiyā suddhadvebhāgā, Silk, entirely, two parts, Bu Np 11, 12 and 13.

chabbassāni nisīdanaṁ; Six years, sitting mat; Bu Np 14 and 15.

Riñcanti rūpikā ceva, They neglect, and money, Bu Np 17 and 18.

ubho nānappakārakā. Two on various kinds. Bu Np 19 and 20.

Ūnabandhanavassikā, Fewer than five mends, rainy season, Bu Np 22 and 24.

suttaṁ vikappanena ca; Thread, and by assigning; Bu Np 26 and 27.

Dvāradānasibbāni ca, Door, and giving, and sewing, Bu Pc 19, 25, and 26.

pūvapaccayajoti ca. Cookie, requisite, and fire. Bu Pc 34, 47, and 56.

Ratanaṁ sūci mañco ca, Precious things, needle, and bed, Bu Pc 84, 86, and 87.

tūlaṁ nisīdanakaṇḍu ca; Cotton down, sitting mat, and itch; Bu Pc 88, 89, and 90.

Vassikā ca sugatena, Rainy-season, and by the standard, Bu Pc 91 and 92.

viññatti aññaṁ cetāpanā. Asking, exchanging for something else. Bi Np 4 and 5.

Dve saṅghikā mahājanikā dve, Two on belonging to the Sangha, two on collective, Bi Np 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Puggalalahukā garu; Individual, light, heavy; Bi Np 10, 11, and 12.

Dve vighāsā sāṭikā ca, Two on food scraps, and bathing robe, Bi Pc 8, 9, and 22.

Samaṇacīvarena ca. And with a monastic robe. Bi Pc 28.

Samapaññāsime dhammā, These exactly fifty rules,

chahi ṭhānehi jāyare; Are produced for six reasons:

Kāyato na vācācittā, From body, not from speech or mind;

vācato na kāyamanā. From speech, not from body or mind;

Kāyavācā na ca cittā, From body and speech, not from mind;

kāyacittā na vācikā; From body and mind, not from speech;

Vācācittā na kāyena, From speech and mind, not from body;

tīhi dvārehi jāyare; Or they are produced from the three doors.

Chasamuṭṭhānikā ete, They have six originations,

sañcarittena sādisā. As it is with matchmaking.

Sañcarittasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for matchmaking are finished.

2.4. Samanubhāsanāsamuṭṭhāna 4. Originations like the offense on pressing

Bhedānuvattadubbaca- Schism, those who side with, difficult to correct, Bu Ss 10, 11, and 12.

dūsaduṭṭhulladiṭṭhi ca; Corrupter, grave, and view; Bu Ss 13, and Bu Pc 64 and 69.

Chandaṁ ujjagghikā dve ca, Consent, and two on laughing loudly, Bu Pc 80, and Sk 11 and 12.

dve ca saddā na byāhare. And two on noise, should not speak. Sk 13, 14, and 43.

Chamā nīcāsane ṭhānaṁ, The ground, on a low seat, standing, Sk 68, 69 and 70.

pacchato uppathena ca; Behind, and next to the path; Sk 71 and 72.

Vajjānuvattigahaṇā, Offenses, taking sides with, holding, Bi Pj 6, 7, and 8.

osāre paccācikkhanā. Should readmit, renouncing. Bi Ss 4 and 10.

Kismiṁ saṁsaṭṭhā dve vadhi, A, two on socializing, beating, Bi Ss 11, 12, and 13, and Bi Pc 20.

Visibbe dukkhitāya ca; Should she unstitch, and with suffering; Bi Pc 23 and 34.

Puna saṁsaṭṭhā na vūpasame, Again socializing, should she not resolve, Bi Pc 36 and 45.

Ārāmañca pavāraṇā. And monastery, inviting correction. Bi Pc 51 and 57.

Anvaddhaṁ saha jīviniṁ dve, Every half, two on disciple, Bi Pc 59, 68, and 70.

Cīvaraṁ anubandhanā; Robe, following. Bi Pc 77 and 78.

Sattatiṁsa ime dhammā, These thirty-seven rules

Kāyavācāya cittato; Are from body, speech and mind;

Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, All have one origination,

Samanubhāsanā yathā. As the rule on pressing.

Samanubhāsanāsamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense on pressing are finished.

2.5. Kathinasamuṭṭhāna 5. Originations like the offense on the robe-making ceremony

Ubbhataṁ kathinaṁ tīṇi, Three on the end of the robe season, Bu Np 1, 2, and 3.

paṭhamaṁ pattabhesajjaṁ; The first on bowl, tonics; Bu Np 21 and 23.

Accekaṁ cāpi sāsaṅkaṁ, And also haste, risky, Bu Np 28 and 29.

pakkamantena vā duve. And two with departing. Bu Pc 14 and 15.

Upassayaṁ paramparā, Nunnery, one before another, Bu Pc 23 and 33.

anatirittaṁ nimantanā; Not left over, invitation; Bu Pc 35 and 46.

Vikappaṁ rañño vikāle, Assignment, of a king, at the wrong time, Bu Pc 59, 83, and 85.

vosāsāraññakena ca. Giving directions, and with wilderness. Bu Pd 2 and 4.

Ussayāsannicayañca, Litigious, and collection, Bi Ss 1 and Bi Np 1.

pure pacchā vikāle ca; Before, after, and at the wrong time; Bi Pc 15, 16, and 17.

Pañcāhikā saṅkamanī, Five days, borrowed, Bi Pc 24 and 25.

dvepi āvasathena ca. And also two with lodging. Bi Pc 47 and 48.

Pasākhe āsane ceva, On the lower part of the body, and on a seat— Bi Pc 60 and 94.

tiṁsa ekūnakā ime; These twenty-nine

Kāyavācā na ca cittā, Are from body and speech, not from mind,

tīhi dvārehi jāyare; Or they are produced from the three doors;

Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, All have two originations,

kathinena sahā samā. The same as with the robe-making ceremony.

Kathinasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense on the robe-making ceremony are finished.

2.6. Eḷakalomasamuṭṭhāna 6. Originations like the offense on wool

Eḷakalomā dve seyyā, Wool, two on sleeping place, Bu Np 16, and Bu Pc 5 and 6.

āhacca piṇḍabhojanaṁ; Detachable, eating an almsmeal; Bu Pc 18 and 31.

Gaṇavikālasannidhi, Group, at the wrong time, store, Bu Pc 32, 37 and 38.

dantaponena celakā. With tooth cleaner, naked ascetic. Bu Pc 40 and 41.

Uyyuttaṁ senaṁ uyyodhi, (Mobilized) army, army, battle, Bu Pc 48, 49, and 50.

surā orena nhāyanā; Alcohol, bathing at less than; Bu Pc 51 and 57.

Dubbaṇṇe dve desanikā, On stains, two on acknowlegment, Bu Pc 57, and Bu Pd 1 and 3.

lasuṇupatiṭṭhe naccanā. Garlic, should she attend on, dancing. Bi Pc 1, 6, and 10.

Nhānamattharaṇaṁ seyyā, Bathing, sheet, sleeping place, Bi Pc 21, 31, and 32.

antoraṭṭhe tathā bahi; Within her own country, and so outside; Bi Pc 37 and 38.

Antovassaṁ cittāgāraṁ, During the rainy season, gallery, Bi Pc 39 and 41.

āsandi suttakantanā. High couch, spinning yarn. Bi Pc 42 and 43.

Veyyāvaccaṁ sahatthā ca, Service, and personally, Bi Pc 44 and 46.

abhikkhukāvāsena ca; And with a monastery without monks; Bi Pc 56.

Chattaṁ yānañca saṅghāṇiṁ, Sunshade, and vehicle, hip ornament, Bi Pc 84, 85, and 86.

alaṅkāraṁ gandhavāsitaṁ. Jewelry, scents, scented. Bi Pc 87, 88, and 89.

Bhikkhunī sikkhamānā ca, Nun, and trainee nun, Bi Pc 90 and 91.

sāmaṇerī gihiniyā; Novice nun, and with female householder; Bi Pc 92 and 93.

Asaṅkaccikā āpatti, The offense for not wearing a chest wrap: Bi Pc 96.

cattārīsā catuttari. The forty-four rules

Kāyena na vācācittena, Are from body, not from speech or mind,

kāyacittena na vācato; Or from body and mind, not from speech;

Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, All have two originations,

samā eḷakalomikāti. The same as ‘wool’.

Eḷakalomasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense on wool are finished.

2.7. Padasodhammasamuṭṭhāna 7. Originations like the offense for memorizing the Teaching

Padaññatra asammatā, Memorizing, except, not appointed, Bu Pc 4, 7, and 21.

tathā atthaṅgatena ca; And so with sunset; Bu Pc 22.

Tiracchānavijjā dve vuttā, Two were spoken on worldly subjects, Bi Pc 46 and 50.

anokāso ca pucchanā. And asking without permission. Bi Pc 95.

Satta sikkhāpadā ete, These seven training rules

vācā na kāyacittato; Are from speech, not from body or mind;

Vācācittena jāyanti, Or they are produced from speech and mind,

na tu kāyena jāyare; Not from body;

Dvisamuṭṭhānikā sabbe, All have two originations,

padasodhammasadisā. As in memorizing the Teaching.

Padasodhammasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for memorizing the Teaching are finished.

2.8. Addhānasamuṭṭhāna 8. Originations like the offense for traveling

Addhānanāvaṁ paṇītaṁ, Traveling, boat, fine, Bu Pc 27, 28, and 39.

mātugāmena saṁhare; With a woman, should she remove; Bu Pc 67 and Bi Pc 2.

Dhaññaṁ nimantitā ceva, Grain, and invited, Bi Pc 7 and 54.

aṭṭha ca pāṭidesanī. And the eight to be acknowledged. Bi Pd 1-8.

Sikkhā pannarasa ete, These fifteen training rules

kāyā na vācā na manā; Are from body, not from speech or mind;

Kāyavācāhi jāyanti, Or they are produced from body and speech,

na te cittena jāyare. Not from mind;

Kāyacittena jāyanti, Or they are produced from body and mind,

na te jāyanti vācato; Not from speech;

Kāyavācāhi cittena, Or from body, speech and mind—

samuṭṭhānā catubbidhā; The fourfold origination;

Paññattā buddhañāṇena, Laid down through the Buddha’s knowledge,

addhānena sahā samā. The same as with the rule on traveling.

Addhānasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for traveling are finished.

2.9. Theyyasatthasamuṭṭhāna 9. Originations like the offense on a group of traveling thieves

Theyyasatthaṁ upassuti, A group of traveling thieves, eavesdropping, Bu Pc 66 and 78.

sūpaviññāpanena ca; And with asking for bean curry; Sk 37.

Rattichannañca okāsaṁ, Night, and concealed, out in the open, Bi Pc 11, 12, and 13.

ete byūhena sattamā. With a cul-de-sac: these seven Bi Pc 14.

Kāyacittena jāyanti, Are produced from body and mind,

na te jāyanti vācato; Not from speech;

Tīhi dvārehi jāyanti, Or they are produced from the three doors.

dvisamuṭṭhānikā ime; They have two originations;

Theyyasatthasamuṭṭhānā, As the origination of a group of traveling thieves,

desitādiccabandhunā. Taught by the Kinsman of the Sun.

Theyyasatthasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense on a group of traveling thieves are finished.

2.10. Dhammadesanāsamuṭṭhāna 10. Originations like the offenses on giving a Teaching

Chattapāṇissa saddhammaṁ, The true Teaching to someone holding a sunshade, Sk 57.

na desenti tathāgatā; The Buddhas do not instruct;

Evameva daṇḍapāṇissa, Nor to someone holding a staff, Sk 58.

satthaāvudhapāṇinaṁ. Or to someone holding a knife, or a weapon. Sk 59 and 60.

Pādukupāhanā yānaṁ, Shoes, sandals, vehicle, Sk 61, 62, and 63.

seyyapallatthikāya ca; Lying down, and clasping their knees; Sk 64 and 65.

Veṭhitoguṇṭhito ceva, Headdress, and covered head: Sk 66 and 67.

ekādasamanūnakā. Eleven rules, not less.

Vācācittena jāyanti, Produced from speech and mind,

na te jāyanti kāyato; Not from body;

Sabbe ekasamuṭṭhānā, All have one origination,

samakā dhammadesane. Like the offenses on giving a teaching.

Dhammadesanāsamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offenses on giving a Teaching are finished.

2.11. Bhūtārocanasamuṭṭhāna 11. Originations like the offense for telling truthfully

Bhūtaṁ kāyena jāyati, Truthfully: produced from the body, Bu Pc 8.

na vācā na ca cittato; Not from speech or mind;

Vācato ca samuṭṭhāti, Or it originates from speech,

na kāyā na ca cittato. Not from body or mind;

Kāyavācāya jāyati, Or it is produced from body and speech,

na tu jāyati cittato; Not from mind;

Bhūtārocanakā nāma, So informing of what is true

tīhi ṭhānehi jāyati. Is produced for three reasons.

Bhūtārocanasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for telling truthfully are finished.

2.12. Corivuṭṭhāpanasamuṭṭhāna 12. Originations like the offense for the admission of a female criminal

Corī vācāya cittena, A female criminal: produced from speech or mind, Bi Ss 2.

na taṁ jāyati kāyato; Not from body;

Jāyati tīhi dvārehi, Or produced from the three doors.

corivuṭṭhāpanaṁ idaṁ; This offense for admitting a female criminal

Akataṁ dvisamuṭṭhānaṁ, Has two originations,

dhammarājena bhāsitaṁ. As spoken by the King of the Teaching.

Corivuṭṭhāpanasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for the admission of a female criminal are finished.

2.13. Ananuññātasamuṭṭhāna 13. Originations like the offense for lack of permission

Ananuññātaṁ vācāya, Lack of permission: from speech, Bi Pc 80.

na kāyā na ca cittato; Not from body or mind;

Jāyati kāyavācāya, Or produced from body and speech,

na taṁ jāyati cittato. Not from mind;

Jāyati vācācittena, Or produced from speech and mind,

na taṁ jāyati kāyato; Not from body;

Jāyati tīhi dvārehi, Or produced from the three doors.

akataṁ catuṭhānikaṁ. One that has four bases is not done. This seems to say that there is no fourth door for committing offenses.

Ananuññātasamuṭṭhānaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ. Originations like the offense for lack of permission are finished.

Samuṭṭhānañhi saṅkhepaṁ, For the contraction on originations

dasa tīṇi sudesitaṁ; Has thirteen classes that have been well taught;

Asammohakaraṁ ṭhānaṁ, A cause for non-delusion,

nettidhammānulomikaṁ; In accordance with the Teaching that guides;

Dhārayanto imaṁ viññū, The wise person remembering this,

samuṭṭhāne na muyhatīti. Is not confused about origination.”

Samuṭṭhānasīsasaṅkhepo niṭṭhito. The thirteen groups of originations of offenses is finished.
