subhÄvito vasippatto paį¹Ä«totiWhat is well developed and has reached mastery is superior.
evaį¹ hÄ«namajjhimapaį¹Ä«tavasena tividho.So it is of three kinds as inferior, medium, and superior.
Dutiyattike7. In the second triad
paį¹hamajjhÄnasamÄdhi saddhiį¹ upacÄrasamÄdhinÄ savitakkasavicÄro.that with applied thought and sustained thought is the concentration of the first jhÄna together with access concentration.
PaƱcakanaye dutiyajjhÄnasamÄdhi avitakkavicÄramatto.That without applied thought, with sustained thought only, is the concentration of the second jhÄna in the fivefold reckoning.
Yo hi vitakkamatteyeva ÄdÄ«navaį¹ disvÄ vicÄre adisvÄFor when a man sees danger only in applied thought and not in sustained thought,
kevalaį¹ vitakkappahÄnamattaį¹ Äkaį¹
khamÄno paį¹hamajjhÄnaį¹ atikkamati,he aspires only to abandon applied thought when he passes beyond the first jhÄna,
so avitakkavicÄramattaį¹ samÄdhiį¹ paį¹ilabhati.and so he obtains concentration without applied thought and with sustained thought only.
Taį¹ sandhÄyetaį¹ vuttaį¹.This is said with reference to him.
Catukkanaye pana dutiyÄdÄ«suConcentration without applied thought and sustained thought is the unification in the three jhÄnas beginning with the second in the fourfold reckoning
paƱcakanaye tatiyÄdÄ«su tÄ«su jhÄnesu ekaggatÄ avitakkÄvicÄro samÄdhÄ«tiand with the third in the fivefold reckoning (see D III 219).

catukkanaye Ädito dvÄ«suconcentration accompanied by happiness is the unification in the two first jhÄnas in the fourfold reckoning
paƱcakanaye ca tÄ«su jhÄnesu ekaggatÄ pÄ«tisahagato samÄdhi.and in the three first jhÄnas in the fivefold reckoning.
Tesveva tatiye ca catutthe ca jhÄne ekaggatÄ sukhasahagato samÄdhi.Concentration accompanied by bliss is the unification in those same jhÄnas and in the third and the fourth respectively in the two reckonings.
AvasÄne upekkhÄsahagato.That accompanied by equanimity is that in the remaining jhÄna.
UpacÄrasamÄdhi pana pÄ«tisukhasahagato vÄ hoti upekkhÄsahagato vÄtiAccess concentration may be accompanied by bliss and happiness or accompanied by equanimity.

Catutthattike upacÄrabhÅ«miyaį¹ ekaggatÄ paritto samÄdhi.9. In the fourth triad limited concentration is unification on the plane of access.
RÅ«pÄvacarÄrÅ«pÄvacarakusale ekaggatÄ mahaggato samÄdhi.Exalted concentration is unification in profitable [consciousness, etc.,] of the fine-material sphere and immaterial sphere.
AriyamaggasampayuttÄ ekaggatÄ appamÄį¹o samÄdhÄ«tiMeasureless concentration is unification associated with the noble paths.
evaį¹ parittamahaggatappamÄį¹avasena tividho.So it is of three kinds as limited, exalted, and measureless.
