4. Bhikį¹£u 4. The Chapter about Monastics
sabbattha saį¹varo sÄdhu sÄdhu sabbattha saį¹varo ą„¤ Restraint is good everywhere, restraint is everywhere good,
sabbattha saį¹vį¹to bhikkhÅ« sabbadukkhÄ pramuccati ą„¤ą„¤ a monastic who is restrained everywhere is liberated from all suffering.
kÄyena samvaro sÄdhu sÄdhu vÄcÄya saį¹varo ą„¤ Restraint of body is good, restraint of speech is good,
manasÄ pi saį¹varo sÄdhu sÄdhu sabbattha saį¹varo ą„¤ restraint of mind is also good, restraint is everywhere good,
sabbattha saį¹vį¹to bhikkhÅ« sabbadukkhÄ pramuccati ą„¤ą„¤ a monastic who is restrained everywhere is liberated from all suffering.
hastasaį¹yyato pÄdasaį¹yyato vÄcÄsaį¹yyato saį¹vį¹tendriyo ą„¤ą„¤ One who controls his hands, controls his feet, controls his speech, controls the mind faculty,
ajjhattarato samÄhito eko saį¹tuį¹£ito tam Ähu bhikkhuį¹ ą„¤ with inner delight and composure, solitary, content: that one is called a monastic.
ÅÄntakÄyo ÅÄntacitto ÅÄntavÄ susamÄhito ą„¤ą„¤ Calm in body and calm in mind, having calmness and composure,
vÄntalokÄmiį¹£o bhikkhÅ« upaÅÄnto ti vuccati ą„¤ having thrown off worldly gain the monastic is called one at peace.
yo mukhe saį¹yyato bhikkhÅ« mantÄbhÄį¹£Ä« anuddhato ą„¤ą„¤ That monastic who restrains the mouth, who speaks well, and who is modest,
atthaį¹ dhammaƱ ca deÅeti madhuraį¹ tassa bhÄį¹£itaį¹ ą„¤ who teaches the meaning of the Dhamma, his speech is sweet.
saį¹ lÄbhaį¹ nÄtimaį¹Ć±eyÄ nÄ āį¹Ć±esaį¹ prihayaį¹ care ą„¤ą„¤ One should not despise oneās own gains, one should not live envious of others,
aį¹Ć±esaį¹ prihayaį¹ bhikkhÅ« samÄdhin nÄdhigacchati ą„¤ the monastic who is envious of others does not attain concentration.
appalÄbho pi ce bhikkhÅ« saį¹ lÄbhaį¹ nÄtimaį¹Ć±ati ą„¤ą„¤ Even if a monastic gains little he should not despise his gains,
taį¹ ve devÄ praÅaį¹santi ÅuddhÄjÄ«viį¹ atandritaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ even the very gods praise the one of pure life who is diligent.
siƱca bhikkhu imÄį¹ nÄvÄį¹ sittÄ te laghu hehiti ą„¤ Please bail out this boat, monastic, when bailed out it will go lightly,
hettÄ rÄgaƱ ca dosaį¹ ca tato nibbÄį¹am ehisi ą„¤ą„¤ cutting off passion and hatred, from here one will go to NibbÄna.
udÄggracitto sumano adhibhÅ«ya priyÄ āpriyaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ With uplifted mind, happy, having overcome what is dear and not dear,
tato prÄmojjabahulo sato bhikkhÅ« parivraje ą„¤ then with lots of happiness, the monastic should wander mindfully.
mettÄvihÄrÄ« bhikkhÅ« prasanno buddhaÅÄsane ą„¤ą„¤ That monastic who dwells in loving-kindness, with faith in Buddhaās dispensation,
paį¹ivijjhi padaį¹ ÅÄntaį¹ saį¹khÄropaÅamaį¹ sukhaį¹ ą„¤ has penetrated the state of peace, the joy in stilling of all conditions,
dį¹į¹£į¹e va dhamme nibbÄį¹aį¹ yogacchemaį¹ anuttaraį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ here and now there is NibbÄna, the unsurpassed release from all bonds.
suį¹Ć±Ä āgÄraį¹ praviį¹£į¹assa ÅÄntacittassa bhikkhuį¹o ą„¤ For the one who has entered an empty place, a monastic with a peaceful mind,
amÄnuį¹£Ä ratÄ« hoti sammaį¹ dhammaį¹ vipaÅÅato ą„¤ą„¤ there is superhuman delight from insight into true Dhamma.
yathÄ yathÄ sammasati khandhÄnÄm udayavyayaį¹ ą„¤ Just as one with right mindfulness regarding the rise and fall of the components of mind and body
labhate cittassa prÄmojjaį¹ amatÄ hetaį¹ vijÄnato ą„¤ą„¤ gains happiness in mind, this is the deathless state for the one who knows.
nÄsti jhÄnam apraį¹Ć±assa praį¹Ć±Ä nÄsti ajhÄyato ą„¤ There is no concentration for one without wisdom, there is no wisdom for one without concentration,
yamhi jhÄnaƱ ca praį¹Ć±Ä ca sa ve nibbÄį¹asantike ą„¤ą„¤ that one in whom there is concentration and wisdom is indeed close to NibbÄna.
tatthÄyam ÄdÄ« bhavati iha praį¹Ć±assa bhikkhuį¹o ą„¤ This is the very beginning for the wise monastic here:
indriyagottÄ« sÄntoį¹£į¹Ä« prÄtimokkhe ca saį¹varo ą„¤ą„¤ contentment, guarding the senses, and restraint in the regulations.
mitte bhajetha kallÄį¹e ÅuddhÄjÄ«vÄ« atandrito ą„¤ One should resort to spiritual friends, ones of pure life, ones who are diligent,
paį¹isandharavaį¹į¹i ssa ÄcÄrakuÅalo siyÄ ą„¤ one should be one of friendly disposition, one who will be skilful in conduct,
tato prÄmojjabahulo sato bhikkhÅ« parivraje ą„¤ą„¤ rejoicing frequently because of that, the monastic should wander mindfully.
