18. Dadantī 18. The Chapter about Giving

dadantiveyathāśraddhaį¹ yathāprasādanaį¹ janā ą„¤ The people give according to faith, according to their confidence,

tattha yo duį¹mano hoti paresaį¹ pānabhojane ą„¤ herein the one who becomes depressed because of food and drink given to others,

na so divā ca rātto ca samādhim adhigacchati ą„¤ą„¤ does not, either by day or night, attain to good concentration.

yassa cetaį¹ samucchinnaį¹ mÅ«lo ā€™gghaccaį¹ samÅ«hataį¹ ą„¤ For the one in whom this depression is cut off, destroyed at the root, dug up,

sa ve divā ca rātto ca samādhim adhigacchati ą„¤ą„¤ does, by day and night, attain to good concentration.

aśśo va bhadro kaį¹£Äya puį¹­į¹­ho ātāpino saviį¹gaį¹‡o carāį¹‡o ą„¤ Like a good horse touched by the whip, living ardent and spiritually intense.

śraddhāya sÄ«lena ca vÄ«riyeį¹‡a ca samādhinā dhammavipaśśanāya ca ą„¤ Having faith, virtue and energy, concentration and insight into the Dhamma,

te khāntisoracchasamādhisaį¹į¹­hitā śutassa praį¹Ć±Äya ca sāram ajjhagÅ« ą„¤ą„¤ well-established in patience, meekness and concentration, they have come to the essence of wisdom and learning.

yo driį¹£į¹­e dhaį¹me labhati śraddhāį¹ praį¹Ć±Äį¹ anuttarāį¹ ą„¤ He who acquires faith and wisdom unsurpassed in this very life,

sa ve mahaddhano loke moham aį¹Ć±aį¹ bahuį¹ dhanaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ has great wealth in the world, other wealth, though great, is useless.

śraddho sÄ«lena saį¹panno yaśabhogasamāhito ą„¤ The faithful one who is possessed of virtue, and has wealth and fame,

yaį¹ yaį¹ so bhajate deśaį¹ tattha tattheva pÅ«jiyo ą„¤ą„¤ whatever district he resorts to, right there and then he is worshipped.

śraddhābitiyaį¹ puruį¹£aį¹ carantaį¹ na naį¹ labheyā aśraddho va cāro ą„¤ Faith is a personā€™s travelling companion, he would not accept travelling without faith,

yaśo ca kittÄ« ca tato nam eti saggaį¹ ca gacche śarÄ«raį¹ prahāya ą„¤ą„¤ from that there will be fame and renown for him, and when he abandons the body he goes to heaven.

aśraddho akataį¹Ć±Å« ca saį¹dhicchedo ca yo naro ą„¤ The person who is beyond mere faith, who knows that which is unmade, who has cut off rebirth-linking,

hatāvakāśo vāntāśo sa ve uttimaporuį¹£o ą„¤ą„¤ who has destroyed the occasion, who has thrown out hope and desire, is surely the person supreme.

kiccho buddhāna uppādo kicchā dhammassa deśanā ą„¤ It is rare the arising of Buddhas, rare the teaching of the Dhamma,

kiccho śraddhapaį¹­Ä«lābho kicchaį¹ māccāna jÄ«vitaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ it is rare to acquire faith, rare is the life of mortals.

anavaį¹­į¹­hitacittassa saddhaį¹mam avijānato ą„¤ For the one with unsettled mind, who does not know the True Dhamma,

pāriplavaprasādassa praį¹Ć±Ä na paripÅ«rati ą„¤ą„¤ whose confidence is wavering, wisdom is unfulfilled.

nāprasannacittena duį¹£į¹­ena kupitena vā ą„¤ For one who has a mind lacking confidence, that is base or agitated,

śakkam ājānituį¹ dhammo sāraį¹bhabahulena vā ą„¤ą„¤ and frequently impetuous, it is not possible to understand the Dhamma.

yo tu vinÄ«ya sāraį¹bhaį¹ aprasādaį¹ ca cetaso ą„¤ He who has removed impetuosity, displeasure from his mind,

prasannacitto sumano sa ve nyāyyā subhāį¹£itaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ with confident mind, happy, he can understand well-spoken words.

manuį¹£yapaį¹­ilābhena saggānāį¹ gamanena ca ą„¤ Acquiring birth as a human, or going to the heavens,

pį¹›thivyām ekarājjena sotāpattiphalaį¹ varaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ or having sole sovereignty over the earthā€”better is the fruit of stream-entry.

yassa śraddhā tathāgate acalā supratiį¹£į¹­hitā ą„¤ He whose faith in the Realised One is well-established and unmoveable,

śīlaƱ ca yassa kallāį¹‡aį¹ ayirakāntaį¹ praśaį¹siyaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ whose virtue is beautiful, praised by the noble ones,

saį¹ghe prasādo yassa asti ujjubhÅ«taƱ ca daį¹Å›anaį¹ ą„¤ who has confidence in the Saį¹…gha, who sees uprightly,

adaridro ti tam āhu amoghaį¹ tassa jÄ«vitaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ he they say is ā€˜not poorā€™, his life is not in vain.

tassā śraddhaƱ ca śīlaį¹ ca prasādaį¹ dhammadaį¹Å›ane ą„¤ Therefore with faith, virtue, confidence and insight into Dhamma,

anuyuƱjeya medhāvÄ« saraį¹ buddhāna śāsanaį¹ ą„¤ą„¤ a sage should devote himself to the essence of the Buddhasā€™ dispensation.
