“Mendicants, there are these five drawbacks of uninspiring conduct.
Katame pañca?
What five?
Attāpi attānaṁ upavadati,
You blame yourself.
anuvicca viññū garahanti,
After examination, sensible people criticize you.
pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati,
You get a bad reputation.
sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti,
You feel lost when you die.
kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.
And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā apāsādike.
These are the five drawbacks of uninspiring conduct.
