10. The Rod
Chapter on Violence
Chabbaggiyabhikkhuvatthu
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa,
All tremble at the rod,
Everyone dreads violence,
sabbe bhāyanti maccuno;
all fear death.
everyone fears death;
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā,
Treating others like oneself,
recognizing that you are similar,
na haneyya na ghātaye.
neither kill nor incite to kill.
do not harm or cause others to harm.
Chabbaggiyavatthu
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa,
All tremble at the rod,
Everyone dreads violence,
sabbesaṁ jīvitaṁ piyaṁ;
all love life.
everyone likes to live;
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā,
Treating others like oneself,
recognizing that you are similar,
na haneyya na ghātaye.
neither kill nor incite to kill.
do not harm or cause others to harm.
Sambahulakumārakavatthu
Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni,
Creatures love happiness,
Beings want pleasure;
yo daṇḍena vihiṁsati;
so if you harm them with a stick
if one harms them with violence
Attano sukhamesāno,
in search of your own happiness,
while seeking pleasure for oneself,
pecca so na labhate sukhaṁ.
after death you won’t find happiness.
one will find no pleasure in the future.
Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni,
Creatures love happiness,
Beings want pleasure;
yo daṇḍena na hiṁsati;
so if you don’t harm them with a stick
if one does not harm them with violence
Attano sukhamesāno,
in search of your own happiness,
while seeking pleasure for oneself,
pecca so labhate sukhaṁ.
after death you will find happiness.
one will find pleasure in the future.
Koṇḍadhānattheravatthu
Māvoca pharusaṁ kañci,
Don’t speak harshly,
Say no harsh words to anyone;
vuttā paṭivadeyyu taṁ;
they may speak harshly back.
they might respond in kind.
Dukkhā hi sārambhakathā,
For aggressive speech is painful,
Hostile speech is painful,
paṭidaṇḍā phuseyyu taṁ.
and the rod may spring back on you.
and it may provoke a violent response.
Sace neresi attānaṁ,
If you still yourself
If you are non-reactive,
kaṁso upahato yathā;
like a broken gong,
like a broken bell,
Esa pattosi nibbānaṁ,
you reach extinguishment
then you have reached Nibbāna
sārambho te na vijjati.
and know no conflict.
and no conflict can be found in you.
Uposathikaitthīnaṁvatthu
Yathā daṇḍena gopālo,
As a cowherd drives the cows
Just as a cowherd, using a stick,
gāvo pājeti gocaraṁ;
to pasture with the rod,
herds cattle through a pasture,
Evaṁ jarā ca maccu ca,
so too old age and death
in the same way, decrepitude and death
āyuṁ pājenti pāṇinaṁ.
drive life from living beings.
herd the living through life.
Ajagarapetavatthu
Atha pāpāni kammāni,
The fool does not understand
Performing evil actions,
karaṁ bālo na bujjhati;
the evil that they do.
a fool does not attain awakening.
Sehi kammehi dummedho,
But because of those deeds, that simpleton
The unwise person is tormented by those actions
aggidaḍḍhova tappati.
is tormented as if burnt by fire.
as if burned by fire.
Mahāmoggallānattheravatthu
Yo daṇḍena adaṇḍesu,
One who violently attacks
One who is violent towards the nonviolent,
appaduṭṭhesu dussati;
the peaceful and the innocent
one who harms the harmless,
Dasannamaññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ,
swiftly falls
will soon experience
khippameva nigacchati.
to one of ten bad states:
one of ten consequences:
Vedanaṁ pharusaṁ jāniṁ,
harsh pain; loss;
Harsh sensations, deprivation,
sarīrassa va bhedanaṁ;
the breakup of the body;
physical injury,
Garukaṁ vāpi ābādhaṁ,
serious illness;
severe illness,
cittakkhepaṁ va pāpuṇe.
mental distress;
mental derangement,
Rājato vā upasaggaṁ,
hazards from rulers;
legal trouble,
Abbhakkhānaṁ va dāruṇaṁ;
vicious slander;
severe accusations,
Parikkhayaṁ va ñātīnaṁ,
loss of kin;
loss of relatives,
Bhogānaṁ va pabhaṅguraṁ.
destruction of wealth;
dissipation of wealth,
Atha vāssa agārāni,
or else their home
or their house
aggi ḍahati pāvako;
is consumed by fire.
catching on fire.
Kāyassa bhedā duppañño,
When their body breaks up, that witless person
Then, when the fool is separated from their body,
nirayaṁ sopapajjati.
is reborn in hell.
they will reappear in hell.
Bahubhaṇḍikabhikkhuvatthu
Na naggacariyā na jaṭā na paṅkā,
Not nakedness, nor matted hair, nor mud,
Nudity, tangled hair, filth,
Nānāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā vā;
nor fasting, nor lying on bare ground,
fasting, sleeping on the ground,
Rajojallaṁ ukkuṭikappadhānaṁ,
nor wearing dust and dirt, or squatting on the heels,
squatting in the mud -
Sodhenti maccaṁ avitiṇṇakaṅkhaṁ.
will cleanse a mortal not free of doubt.
these cannot purify a mortal who has not yet gone beyond doubt.
Santatimahāmattavatthu
Alaṅkato cepi samaṁ careyya,
Dressed up they may be, but if they live well—
However, if one who wears adornments is well-behaved,
Santo danto niyato brahmacārī;
peaceful, tamed, committed to the spiritual path,
peaceful, restrained, committed to spiritual practice,
Sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṁ,
having laid aside violence towards all creatures—
and has renounced violence towards all beings,
So brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu.
they are a brahmin, an ascetic, a mendicant.
then they are a saint, a contemplative, a monk.
Pilotikatissattheravatthu
Hirīnisedho puriso,
Can a person constrained by conscience
What person can be found in this world
koci lokasmi vijjati;
be found in the world?
that is restrained by conscience?
Yo niddaṁ apabodheti,
Who shies away from blame,
Who wakes up when criticized,
asso bhadro kasāmiva.
like a fine horse from the whip?
like a fine horse struck by a whip?
Asso yathā bhadro kasāniviṭṭho,
Like a fine horse under the whip,
Like a fine horse struck by a whip,
Ātāpino saṁvegino bhavātha;
be keen and full of urgency.
be ardent and filled with urgency.
Saddhāya sīlena ca vīriyena ca,
With faith, ethics, and energy,
By means of faith, virtue, determination,
Samādhinā dhammavinicchayena ca;
immersion, and investigation of principles,
concentration, investigation of Dhamma,
Sampannavijjācaraṇā patissatā,
accomplished in knowledge and conduct, mindful,
perfect knowledge, perfect conduct, and thorough awareness,
Jahissatha dukkhamidaṁ anappakaṁ.
give up this vast suffering.
abandon this immense suffering.
Sukhasāmaṇeravatthu
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā,
While irrigators guide water,
Irrigators guide water,
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ;
fletchers shape arrows,
fletchers shape arrows,
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā,
and carpenters carve timber—
carpenters shape wood,
Attānaṁ damayanti subbatā.
those true to their vows tame themselves.
those who practice well train themselves.
