13. The World
Chapter of the World

Daharabhikkhuvatthu

Hīnaṁ dhammaṁ na seveyya,
Don’t resort to lowly things,
One should not participate in inferior teachings,

pamādena na saṁvase;
don’t abide in negligence,
one should not live negligently,

Micchādiṭṭhiṁ na seveyya,
don’t resort to wrong views,
one should not participate in wrong view,

na siyā lokavaḍḍhano.
don’t perpetuate the world.
one should not increase worldliness.

Suddhodanavatthu

Uttiṭṭhe nappamajjeyya,
Get up, don’t be heedless,
One should apply effort, one should not be negligent,

dhammaṁ sucaritaṁ care;
live by principle, with good conduct.
one should practice Dhamma well;

Dhammacārī sukhaṁ seti,
For one of good conduct sleeps at ease,
one who practices the Dhamma rests happily,

asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.
in this world and the next.
in this world and the next.

Dhammaṁ care sucaritaṁ,
Live by principle, with good conduct,
One should practice Dhamma well,

na naṁ duccaritaṁ care;
don’t conduct yourself badly.
one should not engage in misconduct;

Dhammacārī sukhaṁ seti,
For one of good conduct sleeps at ease,
one who practices the Dhamma rests happily,

asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.
in this world and the next.
in this world and the next.

Pañcasatavipassakabhikkhuvatthu

Yathā pubbuḷakaṁ passe,
Look upon the world
Like seeing a bubble,

yathā passe marīcikaṁ;
as a bubble
like seeing a mirage -

Evaṁ lokaṁ avekkhantaṁ,
or a mirage,
one who regards the world in this way

maccurājā na passati.
then the King of Death won’t see you.
is not seen by the Lord of Death.

Abhayarājakumāravatthu

Etha passathimaṁ lokaṁ,
Come, see this world decked out
Come, look at this world,

cittaṁ rājarathūpamaṁ;
like a fancy royal chariot.
as splendid as a royal chariot,

Yattha bālā visīdanti,
Here fools flounder,
where fools become immersed,

natthi saṅgo vijānataṁ.
but the discerning are not chained.
but the conscious do not stick.

Sammajjanattheravatthu

Yo ca pubbe pamajjitvā,
He who once was heedless,
One who previously was negligent

pacchā so nappamajjati;
but turned to heedfulness,
but now is not

Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,
lights up the world
illuminates this world

abbhā muttova candimā.
like the moon freed from clouds.
like the moon set free from a cloud.

Aṅgulimālattheravatthu

Yassa pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ,
Someone whose bad deed
One who replaces their evil deeds

kusalena pidhīyati;
is supplanted by the good,
with wholesome ones

Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,
lights up the world,
illuminates this world

abbhā muttova candimā.
like the moon freed from clouds.
like the moon set free from a cloud.

Pesakāradhītāvatthu

Andhabhūto ayaṁ loko,
Blind is the world,
This world has become blind;

tanukettha vipassati;
few are those who clearly see.
rare are those who see clearly.

Sakuṇo jālamuttova,
Only a handful go to heaven,
Like a bird freed from a net,

appo saggāya gacchati.
like a bird freed from a net.
few go to heaven.

Tiṁsabhikkhuvatthu

Haṁsādiccapathe yanti,
Swans fly by the sun’s path,
Like swans moving through the air,

ākāse yanti iddhiyā;
psychic sages fly through space.
like mystics moving through the sky,

Nīyanti dhīrā lokamhā,
The attentive leave the world,
the wise leave this world,

jetvā māraṁ savāhiniṁ.
having vanquished Māra and his mount.
having defeated Māra and his army.

Ciñcamāṇavikāvatthu

Ekaṁ dhammaṁ atītassa,
When a person, spurning the hereafter,
There is no evil

musāvādissa jantuno;
transgresses in just one thing—
that cannot be done

Vitiṇṇaparalokassa,
lying—
by one who tells lies

natthi pāpaṁ akāriyaṁ.
there is no evil they would not do.
and disregards the afterlife.

Asadisadānavatthu

Na ve kadariyā devalokaṁ vajanti,
The miserly don’t ascend to heaven,
Stingy fools, those who do not praise giving,

Bālā have nappasaṁsanti dānaṁ;
it takes a fool to not praise giving.
do not go the deva-world.

Dhīro ca dānaṁ anumodamāno,
The attentive celebrate giving,
The wise rejoice in giving,

Teneva so hoti sukhī parattha.
and so find happiness in the hereafter.
and because of that they are happy hereafter.

Anāthapiṇḍikaputtakālavatthu

Pathabyā ekarajjena,
The fruit of stream-entry is better
Compared to being the sole ruler of the earth,

saggassa gamanena vā;
than being the one king of the earth,
or going to heaven,

Sabbalokādhipaccena,
than going to heaven,
or dominating the entire world,

sotāpattiphalaṁ varaṁ.
than lordship over all the world.
attaining stream-entry is better.
