Chapter on Happiness
Māravatthu
Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,
Let us live so very happily,
Oh so happily we live,
yesaṁ no natthi kiñcanaṁ;
we who have nothing.

Pītibhakkhā bhavissāma,
We shall feed on rapture,
We will feed on bliss,
devā ābhassarā yathā.
like the gods of streaming radiance.
like the radiant angels.
Kosalaraññoparājayavatthu
Jayaṁ veraṁ pasavati,
Victory breeds enmity;
Victory produces hostility;
dukkhaṁ seti parājito;
the defeated sleep badly.
the defeated sleep uncomfortably.
Upasanto sukhaṁ seti,
The peaceful sleep at ease,
The peaceful sleep happily,
hitvā jayaparājayaṁ.
having left victory and defeat behind.
having relinquished both victory and defeat.
Aññatarakuladārikāvatthu
Natthi rāgasamo aggi,
There is no fire like greed,
There is no fire like passion,
Natthi dosasamo kali;
no crime like hate,
no distress like aversion,
Natthi khandhasamā dukkhā,
no suffering like the aggregates,
no suffering like the components of being,
Natthi santiparaṁ sukhaṁ.
no bliss beyond peace.
no happiness greater than peace.
Ekaupāsakavatthu
Jighacchāparamā rogā,
Hunger is the worst illness,
Hunger is the highest affliction,
saṅkhāraparamā dukhā;
conditions are the worst suffering.

Etaṁ ñatvā yathābhūtaṁ,
For one who truly knows this,
for one who truly knows this,
nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.
extinguishment is the ultimate happiness.

Pasenadikosalavatthu
Ārogyaparamā lābhā,
Freedom from disease is the ultimate blessing;
Freedom from illness is the highest acquisition,
Santuṭṭhiparamaṁ dhanaṁ;
contentment, the ultimate wealth;
contentment is the highest wealth,
Vissāsaparamā ñāti,
trust is the ultimate family;
trust is the highest kin,
Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.

Tissattheravatthu
Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā,
Having drunk the nectar of seclusion
Having tasted the flavor of seclusion
rasaṁ upasamassa ca;
and the nectar of peace—
and the flavor of peace,
Niddaro hoti nippāpo,
free of stress, free of evil,
free from anguish, flawless,
dhammapītirasaṁ pivaṁ.
drink the joyous nectar of truth.
one tastes the bliss of the Dhamma.
Sakkavatthu
Sāhu dassanamariyānaṁ,
It’s good to see the noble ones,
It is good to see the Noble Ones,
sannivāso sadā sukho;
staying with them is always good.
living with them is always pleasant.
Adassanena bālānaṁ,
Were you not to see fools,
One who does not see fools
niccameva sukhī siyā.
you’d always be happy.
will always be happy.
Bālasaṅgatacārī hi,
For one who consorts with fools
Those who go with fools
dīghamaddhāna socati;
grieves long.
will sorrow for a long time.
Dukkho bālehi saṁvāso,
Painful is dwelling with fools,
Living with fools is painful,
amitteneva sabbadā;
like being stuck with your enemy.
like being with an enemy all the time.
Dhīro ca sukhasaṁvāso,
Happy is dwelling with a sage,
But living with the wise is pleasant,
ñātīnaṁva samāgamo.
like meeting with your kin.
like being together with one's relatives.
Tasmā hi—

Dhīrañca paññañca bahussutañca,
A sage, attentive and learned,
follow one who is steadfast, wise, and educated,
Dhorayhasīlaṁ vatavantamariyaṁ;
a behemoth of virtue, true to their vows, noble:
a good person who is patient, devout, noble, and astute,
Taṁ tādisaṁ sappurisaṁ sumedhaṁ,
follow a true and intelligent person such as this,
follow that person,
Bhajetha nakkhattapathaṁva candimā.
as the moon tracks the path of the stars.
