Chapter Two
Soceyyasutta
Purity
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, soceyyāni.
“Mendicants, there are these three kinds of purity.
Katamāni tīṇi?
What three?
Kāyasoceyyaṁ, vacīsoceyyaṁ, manosoceyyaṁ—
Purity of body, speech, and mind.
imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi soceyyānī”ti.
These are the three kinds of purity.”
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
“Kāyasuciṁ vacīsuciṁ,
“Purity of body, purity of speech,
cetosucimanāsavaṁ;
and undefiled purity of heart.
Suciṁ soceyyasampannaṁ,
A pure person, blessed with purity,
āhu sabbappahāyinan”ti.
has given up everything, they say.”
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
Sattamaṁ.
