8. Matakabhattajātaka

The Feast for the Dead: a past life story

“Evañce sattā jāneyyuṁ,
If beings only knew

dukkhāyaṁ jātisambhavo;
how this suffering is created by birth,

Na pāṇo pāṇinaṁ haññe,
no creature would kill another,

pāṇaghātī hi socatī”ti.
for the slayer of creatures grieves.

Matakabhattajātakaṁ aṭṭhamaṁ.
