The training rule on going wandering
Tena samayena buddho bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrel sanctuary.
Tena kho pana samayena bhikkhuniyo tattheva rājagahe vassaṁ vasanti, tattha hemantaṁ, tattha gimhaṁ.
At that time the nuns were staying right there at Rājagaha for the rainy season, the winter, and the summer.
Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—
People complained and criticized them,
“āhundarikā bhikkhunīnaṁ disā andhakārā, na imāsaṁ disā pakkhāyantī”ti.
“The nuns are leaving the districts in darkness and obscurity. They don’t brighten them up by their presence.”
Assosuṁ kho bhikkhuniyo tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khiyyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ.
The nuns heard the complaints of those people.
Atha kho tā bhikkhuniyo bhikkhūnaṁ etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ.
They then told the monks,
Bhikkhū bhagavato etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ.
who in turn told the Buddha.
Atha kho bhagavā etasmiṁ nidāne etasmiṁ pakaraṇe dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi—
Soon afterwards the Buddha gave a teaching and addressed the monks:
“tena hi, bhikkhave, bhikkhunīnaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññapessāmi dasa atthavase paṭicca—
“Well then, monks, I will lay down a training rule for the nuns for the following ten reasons:
saṅghasuṭṭhutāya …pe…
for the well-being of the Sangha …
saddhammaṭṭhitiyā vinayānuggahāya.
for the longevity of the true Teaching, and for supporting the training.
Evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—
And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:
“Yā pana bhikkhunī vassaṁvuṭṭhā cārikaṁ na pakkameyya antamaso chappañcayojanānipi, pācittiyan”ti.
‘If a nun who has completed the rainy-season residence does not go wandering at least 65 to 80 kilometers, she commits an offense entailing confession.’”
Yā panāti
A:
yā yādisā …pe…
whoever …
bhikkhunīti
Nun:
…pe… ayaṁ imasmiṁ atthe adhippetā bhikkhunīti.
… The nun who has been given the full ordination in unanimity by both Sanghas through a legal procedure consisting of one motion and three announcements that is irreversible and fit to stand—this sort of nun is meant in this case.
Vassaṁvuṭṭhā nāma
Who has completed the rainy-season residence:
purimaṁ vā temāsaṁ pacchimaṁ vā temāsaṁ vuṭṭhā.
who has completed the first three or the last three months of the rainy-season residence.
“Cārikaṁ na pakkamissāmi antamaso chappañcayojanānipī”ti dhuraṁ nikkhittamatte āpatti pācittiyassa.
If she thinks, “I won’t go wandering, not even 65 to 80 kilometers,” then by the mere fact of abandoning her duty, she commits an offense entailing confession.
Anāpatti—
There is no offense:
sati antarāye,
if there is an obstacle;
pariyesitvā dutiyikaṁ bhikkhuniṁ na labhati,
if she searches for a companion nun, but is unable to find one;
gilānāya,
if she is sick;
āpadāsu,
if there is an emergency;
ummattikāya,
if she is insane;
ādikammikāyāti.
if she is the first offender.
Dasamasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.
The tenth training rule is finished.
Tuvaṭṭavaggo catuttho.
The fourth subchapter on lying down is finished.
