1. Parimaṇḍalasikkhāpada

The training rule on evenly all around

Ime kho panāyyāyo sekhiyā dhammā uddesaṁ āgacchanti.
Venerables, these rules to be trained in come up for recitation.

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time when the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery,

Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo puratopi pacchatopi olambentī nivāsenti.
the nuns from the group of six wore their sarongs hanging down in front and behind.

Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—
People complained and criticized them,

“kathañhi nāma bhikkhuniyo puratopi pacchatopi olambentī nivāsessanti, seyyathāpi gihiniyo kāmabhoginiyo”ti.
“How can nuns wear their sarongs hanging down in front and behind? They’re just like householders who indulge in worldly pleasures!”

Assosuṁ kho bhikkhuniyo tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khiyyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ.
The nuns heard the complaints of those people,

Yā tā bhikkhuniyo appicchā …pe… tā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—
and the nuns of few desires complained and criticized them,

“kathañhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo puratopi pacchatopi olambentī nivāsessantī”ti …pe…
“How can the nuns from the group of six wear their sarongs hanging down in front and behind?” …

“saccaṁ kira, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo puratopi pacchatopi olambentī nivāsentī”ti?
“Is it true, monks, that those nuns do this?”

“Saccaṁ, bhagavā”ti.
“It’s true, Sir.”

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe…
The Buddha rebuked them …

kathañhi nāma, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo puratopi pacchatopi olambentī nivāsessanti.
“How can the nuns from the group of six do this?

Netaṁ, bhikkhave, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe…
This will affect people’s confidence …” …

evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—
“And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:

“Parimaṇḍalaṁ nivāsessāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.
‘“I will wear my sarong evenly all around,” this is how you should train.’”

Parimaṇḍalaṁ nivāsetabbaṁ nābhimaṇḍalaṁ jāṇumaṇḍalaṁ paṭicchādentiyā.
One should wear one’s sarong evenly all around, covering the navel and the knees.

Yā anādariyaṁ paṭicca purato vā pacchato vā olambentī nivāseti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
If a nun, out of disrespect, wears her sarong hanging down in front or behind, she commits an offense of wrong conduct.

Anāpatti—
There is no offense:

asañcicca,
if it is unintentional;

assatiyā,
if she is not mindful;

ajānantiyā,
if she does not know;

gilānāya,
if she is sick;

āpadāsu,
if there is an emergency;

ummattikāya,
if she is insane;

ādikammikāyāti …pe…
if she is the first offender.
