1. Pārājikakaṇḍa
The chapter on offenses entailing expulsion
Methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevanto kati āpattiyo āpajjati?
When having sexual intercourse, how many kinds of offenses does one commit?
Methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
One commits three kinds of offenses:
Akkhāyite sarīre methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevati, āpatti pārājikassa;
when one has sexual intercourse with an undecomposed corpse, one commits an offense entailing expulsion;
yebhuyyena khāyite sarīre methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one has sexual intercourse with a mostly decomposed corpse, one commits a serious offense;
vaṭṭakate mukhe acchupantaṁ aṅgajātaṁ paveseti, āpatti dukkaṭassa—
when one inserts one’s penis into a wide open mouth without touching it, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.

When stealing, how many kinds of offenses does one commit?
Adinnaṁ ādiyanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
One commits three kinds of offenses:
Pañcamāsakaṁ vā atirekapañcamāsakaṁ vā agghanakaṁ adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyati, āpatti pārājikassa;
when, intending to steal, one steals something worth five <i lang='pi' translate='no'>māsaka</i> coins or more, one commits an offense entailing expulsion;
atirekamāsakaṁ vā ūnapañcamāsakaṁ vā agghanakaṁ adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when, intending to steal, one steals something worth more than one <i lang='pi' translate='no'>māsaka</i> coin but less than five, one commits a serious offense;
māsakaṁ vā ūnamāsakaṁ vā agghanakaṁ adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyati, āpatti dukkaṭassa—
when, intending to steal, one steals something worth one <i lang='pi' translate='no'>māsaka</i> coin or less, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
adinnaṁ ādiyanto imā tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
Sañcicca manussaviggahaṁ jīvitā voropento kati āpattiyo āpajjati?
When intentionally killing a human being, how many kinds of offenses does one commit?
Sañcicca manussaviggahaṁ jīvitā voropento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
One commits three kinds of offenses:
Manussaṁ odissa opātaṁ khaṇati “papatitvā marissatī”ti, āpatti dukkaṭassa;
when one digs a pit for people, thinking, “Falling into it someone will die,” one commits an offense of wrong conduct;
papatite dukkhā vedanā uppajjati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when a person experiences pain after falling in, one commits a serious offense;
marati, āpatti pārājikassa—
when the person dies, one commits an offense entailing expulsion.
sañcicca manussaviggahaṁ jīvitā voropento imā tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
Asantaṁ abhūtaṁ uttarimanussadhammaṁ ullapanto kati āpattiyo āpajjati?
When untruthfully and groundlessly claiming a superhuman quality, how many kinds of offenses does one commit?
Asantaṁ abhūtaṁ uttarimanussadhammaṁ ullapanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
One commits three kinds of offenses:
Pāpiccho icchāpakato asantaṁ abhūtaṁ uttarimanussadhammaṁ ullapati, āpatti pārājikassa;
when, having bad desires, overcome by desire, one claims a non-existent, unreal superhuman quality, one commits an offense entailing expulsion;
“yo te vihāre vasati, so bhikkhu arahā”ti bhaṇati, paṭivijānantassa āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one says, “The monk who stays in your dwelling is a perfected one,” and the listener understands, one commits a serious offense;
na paṭivijānantassa āpatti dukkaṭassa—
when the listener does not understand, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
asantaṁ abhūtaṁ uttarimanussadhammaṁ ullapanto imā tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
Cattāro pārājikā niṭṭhitā.
The four offenses entailing expulsion are finished.
2. Saṅghādisesakaṇḍa
2. The chapter on offenses entailing suspension
(…) Upakkamitvā asuciṁ mocento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
(…) When emitting semen by means of effort, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Ceteti upakkamati muccati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa;
when one intends and makes an effort, and semen is emitted, one commits an offense entailing suspension;
ceteti upakkamati na muccati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one intends and makes an effort, but semen is not emitted, one commits a serious offense;
payoge dukkaṭaṁ.
for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct.
Mātugāmena saddhiṁ kāyasaṁsaggaṁ samāpajjanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When making physical contact with a woman, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Kāyena kāyaṁ āmasati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa;
when one touches body with body, one commits an offense entailing suspension;
kāyena kāyapaṭibaddhaṁ āmasati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one touches what is connected to the body with the body, one commits a serious offense;
kāyapaṭibaddhena kāyapaṭibaddhaṁ āmasati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
when one touches what is connected to the body with what is connected to the body, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Mātugāmaṁ duṭṭhullāhi vācāhi obhāsento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When speaking indecently to a woman, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Vaccamaggaṁ passāvamaggaṁ ādissa vaṇṇampi bhaṇati, avaṇṇampi bhaṇati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa;
when, referring to the anus or the vagina, one praises or disparages, one commits an offense entailing suspension;
vaccamaggaṁ passāvamaggaṁ ṭhapetvā adhakkhakaṁ ubbhajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ ādissa vaṇṇampi bhaṇati avaṇṇampi bhaṇati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when, referring to any part below the collar bone but above the knees, apart from the anus or the vagina, one praises or disparages, one commits a serious offense;
kāyapaṭibaddhaṁ ādissa vaṇṇampi bhaṇati avaṇṇampi bhaṇati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
when, referring to anything connected to the body, one praises or disparages, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Attakāmapāricariyāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When encouraging the satisfaction of one’s own desires, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Mātugāmassa santike attakāmapāricariyāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa;
when one encourages a woman to satisfy one’s own desires, one commits an offense entailing suspension;
paṇḍakassa santike attakāmapāricariyāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one encourages a <i lang='pi' translate='no'>paṇḍaka</i> to satisfy one’s own desires, one commits a serious offense;
tiracchānagatassa santike attakāmapāricariyāya vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
when one encourages an animal to satisfy one’s own desires, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Sañcarittaṁ samāpajjanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When acting as a matchmaker, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Paṭiggaṇhāti vīmaṁsati paccāharati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa;
when one accepts the mission, finds out the response, and reports back, one commits an offense entailing suspension;
paṭiggaṇhāti vīmaṁsati na paccāharati, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when one accepts the mission, and finds out the response, but does not report back, one commits a serious offense;
paṭiggaṇhāti na vīmaṁsati na paccāharati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.
when one accepts the mission, but neither finds out the response, nor reports back, one commits an offense of wrong conduct.
Saññācikāya kuṭiṁ kārāpento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a hut built by means of begging, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it built, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
ekaṁ piṇḍaṁ anāgate, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when there is one piece left to complete the hut, one commits a serious offense;
tasmiṁ piṇḍe āgate, āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last piece is finished, one commits an offense entailing suspension.
Mahallakaṁ vihāraṁ kārāpento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a large dwelling built, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it built, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
ekaṁ piṇḍaṁ anāgate, āpatti thullaccayassa;
when there is one piece left to complete the hut, one commits a serious offense;
tasmiṁ piṇḍe āgate, āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last piece is finished, one commits an offense entailing suspension.
Bhikkhuṁ amūlakena pārājikena dhammena anuddhaṁsento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When groundlessly charging a monk with an offense entailing expulsion, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Anokāsaṁ kārāpetvā cāvanādhippāyo vadeti, āpatti saṅghādisesena dukkaṭassa;
when, without having gotten his permission, one speaks with the aim of making him leave the monastic life, one commits one offense entailing suspension and one offense of wrong conduct;
okāsaṁ kārāpetvā akkosādhippāyo vadeti, āpatti omasavādassa.
when, having gotten his permission, one speaks with the aim of abusing him, one commits an offense for abusive speech.
Bhikkhuṁ aññabhāgiyassa adhikaraṇassa kiñci desaṁ lesamattaṁ upādāya pārājikena dhammena anuddhaṁsento tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When charging a monk with an offense entailing expulsion, using an unrelated legal issue as a pretext, one commits three kinds of offenses:
Anokāsaṁ kārāpetvā cāvanādhippāyo vadeti, āpatti saṅghādisesena dukkaṭassa;
when, without having gotten his permission, one speaks with the aim of making him leave the monastic life, one commits one offense entailing suspension and one offense of wrong conduct;
okāsaṁ kārāpetvā akkosādhippāyo vadeti, āpatti omasavādassa.
when, having gotten his permission, one speaks with the aim of abusing him, one commits an offense for abusive speech.
Saṅghabhedako bhikkhu yāvatatiyaṁ samanubhāsanāya na paṭinissajjanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When not stopping when pressed for the third time, a monk who is pursuing schism in the Sangha commits three kinds of offenses:
Ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ;
after the motion, he commits an offense of wrong conduct;
dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā;
after each of the first two announcements, he commits a serious offense;
kammavācāpariyosāne āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last announcement is finished, he commits an offense entailing suspension.
Bhedakānuvattakā bhikkhū yāvatatiyaṁ samanubhāsanāya na paṭinissajjantā tisso āpattiyo āpajjanti.
When not stopping when pressed for the third time, monks who side with a monk who is pursuing schism commit three kinds of offenses:
Ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ;
after the motion, they commit an offense of wrong conduct;
dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā;
after each of the first two announcements, they commit a serious offense;
kammavācāpariyosāne āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last announcement is finished, they commit an offense entailing suspension.
Dubbaco bhikkhu yāvatatiyaṁ samanubhāsanāya na paṭinissajjanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When not stopping when pressed for the third time, a monk who is difficult to correct commits three kinds of offenses:
Ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ;
after the motion, he commits an offense of wrong conduct;
dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā;
after each of the first two announcements, he commits a serious offense;
kammavācāpariyosāne āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last announcement is finished, he commits an offense entailing suspension.
Kuladūsako bhikkhu yāvatatiyaṁ samanubhāsanāya na paṭinissajjanto tisso āpattiyo āpajjati.
When not stopping when pressed for the third time, a monk who is a corrupter of families commits three kinds of offenses:
Ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ;
after the motion, he commits an offense of wrong conduct;
dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā;
after each of the first two announcements, he commits a serious offense;
kammavācāpariyosāne āpatti saṅghādisesassa.
when the last announcement is finished, he commits an offense entailing suspension.
Terasa saṅghādisesā niṭṭhitā.
The thirteen rules entailing suspension are finished.
4. Nissaggiyakaṇḍa
4. The chapter on relinquishment
4.1. Kathinavagga
4.1 The subchapter on the robe season
Atirekacīvaraṁ dasāhaṁ atikkāmento ekaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjati.
When keeping an extra robe more than ten days, one commits one kind of offense:
Nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Ekarattaṁ ticīvarena vippavasanto ekaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjati.
When staying apart from one’s three robes for one day, one commits one kind of offense:
Nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Akālacīvaraṁ paṭiggahetvā māsaṁ atikkāmento ekaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjati.
When receiving out-of-season robe-cloth and then keeping it for more than a month, one commits one kind of offense:
Nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Aññātikāya bhikkhuniyā purāṇacīvaraṁ dhovāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having an unrelated nun wash a used robe, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Dhovāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it washed, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
dhovāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it washed, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Aññātikāya bhikkhuniyā hatthato cīvaraṁ paṭiggaṇhanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When receiving a robe directly from an unrelated nun, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Gaṇhāti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of taking it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
gahite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has taken it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Aññātakaṁ gahapatiṁ vā gahapatāniṁ vā cīvaraṁ viññāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When asking an unrelated male or female householder for a robe, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Viññāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of asking, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
viññāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has asked, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Aññātakaṁ gahapatiṁ vā gahapatāniṁ vā tatuttari cīvaraṁ viññāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When asking an unrelated male or female householder for too many robes, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Viññāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of asking, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
viññāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has asked, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Pubbe appavārito aññātakaṁ gahapatikaṁ upasaṅkamitvā cīvare vikappaṁ āpajjanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When, without first being invited, one goes to an unrelated householder and specifies the kind of robe-cloth one wants, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Vikappaṁ āpajjati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of specifying it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
vikappaṁ āpanne nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has specified it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Pubbe appavārito aññātake gahapatike upasaṅkamitvā cīvare vikappaṁ āpajjanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When, without first being invited, one goes to unrelated householders and specifies the kind of robe-cloth one wants, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Vikappaṁ āpajjati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of specifying it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
vikappaṁ āpanne nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has specified it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Atirekatikkhattuṁ codanāya atirekachakkhattuṁ ṭhānena cīvaraṁ abhinipphādento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When getting robe-cloth after prompting more than three times and standing more than six times, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Abhinipphādeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of getting it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
abhinipphādite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has gotten it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Kathinavaggo paṭhamo.
The first subchapter on the robe season is finished.
4.2. Kosiyavagga
4.2 The subchapter on silk
Kosiyamissakaṁ santhataṁ kārāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a blanket made that contains silk, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it made, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
kārāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it made, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Suddhakāḷakānaṁ eḷakalomānaṁ santhataṁ kārāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a blanket made entirely of black wool, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it made, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
kārāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it made, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Anādiyitvā tulaṁ odātānaṁ tulaṁ gocariyānaṁ navaṁ santhataṁ kārāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a new blanket made without using one measure of white wool and one measure of brown, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it made, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
kārāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it made, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Anuvassaṁ santhataṁ kārāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a blanket made every year, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it made, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
kārāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it made, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Anādiyitvā purāṇasanthatassa sāmantā sugatavidatthiṁ navaṁ nisīdanasanthataṁ kārāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having a new sitting-blanket made without incorporating a piece of one standard handspan from the border of an old blanket, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Kārāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it made, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
kārāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it made, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Eḷakalomāni paṭiggahetvā tiyojanaṁ atikkāmento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When receiving wool and then taking it more than 40 kilometers, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Paṭhamaṁ pādaṁ tiyojanaṁ atikkāmeti, āpatti dukkaṭassa;
when one goes beyond 40 kilometers with the first foot, one commits an offense of wrong conduct;
dutiyaṁ pādaṁ atikkāmeti, nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one goes beyond with the second foot, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Aññātikāya bhikkhuniyā eḷakalomāni dhovāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When having an unrelated nun wash wool, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Dhovāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it washed, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
dhovāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has had it washed, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Rūpiyaṁ paṭiggaṇhanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When receiving money, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Gaṇhāti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of taking it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
gahite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has taken it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Nānappakārakaṁ rūpiyasaṁvohāraṁ samāpajjanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When trading with money in various ways, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Samāpajjati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of trading, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
samāpanne nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has traded, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Nānappakārakaṁ kayavikkayaṁ samāpajjanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When bartering in various ways, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Samāpajjati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of bartering, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
samāpanne nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has bartered, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Kosiyavaggo dutiyo.
The second subchapter on silk is finished.
4.3. Pattavagga
4.3 The subchapter on almsbowls
Atirekapattaṁ dasāhaṁ atikkāmento ekaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjati.
When keeping an extra almsbowl for more than ten days, one commits one kind of offense:
Nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Ūnapañcabandhanena pattena aññaṁ navaṁ pattaṁ cetāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When exchanging an almsbowl with fewer than five mends for a new almsbowl, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Cetāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of exchanging it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
cetāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has exchanged it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Bhesajjāni paṭiggahetvā sattāhaṁ atikkāmento ekaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjati.
When receiving tonics and then keeping them for more than seven days, one commits one kind of offense:
Nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Atirekamāse sese gimhāne vassikasāṭikacīvaraṁ pariyesanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When looking for a rainy-season robe when there is more than a month left of summer, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Pariyesati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of looking for it, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
pariyiṭṭhe nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has looked for it, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Bhikkhussa sāmaṁ cīvaraṁ datvā kupito anattamano acchindanto dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When giving a robe to a monk and then taking it back in anger, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Acchindati, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is in the process of taking it back, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
acchinne nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
when one has taken it back, one commits an offense entailing relinquishment and confession.
Sāmaṁ suttaṁ viññāpetvā tantavāyehi cīvaraṁ vāyāpento dve āpattiyo āpajjati.
When asking for thread and then having weavers weave robe-cloth, one commits two kinds of offenses:
Vāyāpeti, payoge dukkaṭaṁ;
when one is having it woven, then for the effort there is an offense of wrong conduct;
vāyāpite nissaggiyaṁ pācittiyaṁ.
