The collection of verses

1. Sattanagaresupaññattasikkhāpada
Training rules laid down in seven towns

“Ekaṁsaṁ cīvaraṁ katvā,
“Arranging your robe over one shoulder,

paggaṇhitvāna añjaliṁ;
Raising your joined palms—

Āsīsamānarūpova,
What are you hoping for,

kissa tvaṁ idha māgato”.
That you have come here?”

“Dvīsu vinayesu ye paññattā,
“What has been laid down in the two Monastic Laws,

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu;
Which come up for recitation on the observance days—

Kati te sikkhāpadā honti,
How many training rules do they have?

Katisu nagaresu paññattā”.
In how many towns were they laid down?”

“Bhaddako te ummaṅgo,
“Your approach is excellent,

yoniso paripucchasi;
You question sensibly;

Taggha te ahamakkhissaṁ,
And so I will tell you,

yathāsi kusalo tathā”.
According to your skill.

“Dvīsu vinayesu ye paññattā,
What has been laid down in the two Monastic Laws,

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu;
Which come up for recitation on the observance days—

Aḍḍhuḍḍhasatāni te honti,
They are three hundred and fifty,

Sattasu nagaresu paññattā”.
Laid down in seven towns.”

“Katamesu sattasu nagaresu paññattā,
“In which seven towns were they laid down?

Iṅgha me tvaṁ byākara naṁ;
Please tell me this;

Taṁ vacanapathaṁ nisāmayitvā,
And after attending carefully to your explanation,

Paṭipajjema hitāya no siyā”.
We will practice for our own benefit.”

“Vesāliyaṁ rājagahe,
“They were laid down at Vesālī, at Rājagaha,

sāvatthiyañca āḷaviyaṁ;
At Sāvatthī, at Āḷavī;

Kosambiyañca sakkesu,
And at Kosambī, and in the Sakyan country,

bhaggesu ceva paññattā”.
And also among the Bhaggas.”

“Kati vesāliyaṁ paññattā,
“How many were laid down at Vesālī?

kati rājagahe katā;
How many were pronounced at Rājagaha?

Sāvatthiyaṁ kati honti,
How many were there at Sāvatthī?

kati āḷaviyaṁ katā”.
How many were pronounced at Āḷavī?

“Kati kosambiyaṁ paññattā,
How many were laid down at Kosambī?

kati sakkesu vuccanti;
How many were spoken in the Sakyan country?

Kati bhaggesu paññattā,
How many were laid down among the Bhaggas?

taṁ me akkhāhi pucchito”.
Please tell me who have asked.”

“Dasa vesāliyaṁ paññattā,
“Ten were laid down at Vesālī,

Ekavīsa rājagahe katā;
Twenty-one pronounced at Rājagaha;

Chaūna tīṇisatāni,
And two hundred and ninety-four,

Sabbe sāvatthiyaṁ katā.
Pronounced at Sāvatthī.

Cha āḷaviyaṁ paññattā,
Six were laid down at Āḷavī,

aṭṭha kosambiyaṁ katā;
Eight pronounced at Kosambī;

Aṭṭha sakkesu vuccanti,
Eight spoken in the Sakyan country,

tayo bhaggesu paññattā.
And three laid down among the Bhaggas.

Ye vesāliyaṁ paññattā,
Those laid down in Vesālī,

te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Methunaviggahuttari,
Sexual intercourse, person, super,

atirekañca kāḷakaṁ.
And extra, black.

Bhūtaṁ paramparabhattaṁ,
True, a meal before another,

dantaponena acelako;
With tooth cleaner, naked ascetic;

Bhikkhunīsu ca akkoso,
And abuse from the nuns—

dasete vesāliyaṁ katā.
These ten were pronounced at Vesālī.

Ye rājagahe paññattā,
Those laid down at Rājagaha,

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Adinnādānaṁ rājagahe,
Stealing at Rājagaha,

Dve anuddhaṁsanā dvepi ca bhedā.
Two on charging, and also two on schism.

Antaravāsakaṁ rūpiyaṁ suttaṁ,
Sarong, money, thread,

Ujjhāpanena ca pācitapiṇḍaṁ;
And with complaining, having almsfood prepared;

Gaṇabhojanaṁ vikāle ca,
A group meal, and at the wrong time,

Cārittaṁ nahānaṁ ūnavīsati.
Visiting, bathing, less than twenty.

Cīvaraṁ datvā vosāsanti,
Gives out a robe, giving directions—

Ete rājagahe katā;
These were pronounced at Rājagaha;

Giraggacariyā tattheva,
Hilltop, wandering, right there,

Chandadānena ekavīsati.
With given consent it is twenty-one.

Ye sāvatthiyaṁ paññattā,
Those laid down at Sāvatthī,

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Pārājikāni cattāri,
Four offenses entailing expulsion,

Saṅghādisesā bhavanti soḷasa.
And sixteen offenses entailing suspension.

Aniyatā ca dve honti,
And the two undetermined offenses,

nissaggiyā catuvīsati;
Twenty-four offenses entailing relinquishment;

Chapaññāsasatañceva,
And one hundred and fifty-six,

khuddakāni pavuccanti.
Minor offenses were spoken.

Dasayeva ca gārayhā,
And ten blameworthy offenses,

dvesattati ca sekhiyā;
And seventy-two on training—

Chaūna tīṇisatāni,
Two hundred and ninety-four,

sabbe sāvatthiyaṁ katā.
All pronounced at Sāvatthī.

Ye āḷaviyaṁ paññattā,
Those laid down at Āḷavī,

te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Kuṭikosiyaseyyā ca,
Hut, silk, and sleeping place,

khaṇane gaccha devate;
On digging, go deity;

Sappāṇakañca siñcanti,
And they pour water that contains living beings—

cha ete āḷaviyaṁ katā.
These six were pronounced at Āḷavī.

Ye kosambiyaṁ paññattā,
Those laid down at Kosambī,

te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Mahāvihāro dovacassaṁ,
A large dwelling, difficult to correct,

aññaṁ dvāraṁ surāya ca;
Evasive, door, and with alcohol;

Anādariyaṁ sahadhammo,
Disrespect, legitimately,

payopānena aṭṭhamaṁ.
And the eighth is with a milk drink.

Ye sakkesu paññattā,
Those laid down in the Sakyan country,

te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Eḷakalomāni patto ca,
Wool, and bowl,

ovādo ceva bhesajjaṁ.
And instruction, medicine.

Sūci āraññiko ceva,
Needle, and wilderness:

aṭṭhete kāpilavatthave;
The eight at Kapilavatthu;

Udakasuddhiyā ovādo,
With cleaning with water, and instruction,

bhikkhunīsu pavuccanti.
Spoken among the nuns.

Ye bhaggesu paññattā,
Those laid down among the Bhaggas,

te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Samādahitvā visibbenti,
They lit a fire to warm themselves,

sāmisena sasitthakaṁ.
Soiled with food, containing rice.

Pārājikāni cattāri,
The four offenses entailing expulsion,

saṅghādisesāni bhavanti;
And seven offenses entailing suspension;

Satta ca nissaggiyāni,
Eight offenses entailing relinquishment,

aṭṭha dvattiṁsa khuddakā.
And thirty-two minor offenses.

Dve gārayhā tayo sekkhā,
Two blameworthy offenses, and three on training—

chappaññāsa sikkhāpadā;
Fifty-six training rules;

Chasu nagaresu paññattā,
Laid down at six towns,

buddhenādiccabandhunā.
By the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.

Chaūna tīṇisatāni,
Two hundred and ninety-four,

sabbe sāvatthiyaṁ katā;
All pronounced at Sāvatthī;

Kāruṇikena buddhena,
By the compassionate Buddha,

gotamena yasassinā”.
The famous Gotama.”

2. Catuvipatti
2. The four kinds of failure

“Yaṁ taṁ pucchimha akittayi no,
“What we have asked, you have answered,

Taṁ taṁ byākataṁ anaññathā;
All is explained, not otherwise;

Aññaṁ taṁ pucchāmi tadiṅgha brūhi,
I wish to ask you another question—please tell me this:

Garuka lahukañcāpi sāvasesaṁ;
Serious, and light, curable;

Anavasesaṁ duṭṭhullañca aduṭṭhullaṁ,
Incurable, and grave, minor,

Ye ca yāvatatiyakā.
And those that are ‘after the third’.

Sādhāraṇaṁ asādhāraṇaṁ,
In common, not in common,

Vibhattiyo ca yehi samathehi sammanti;
The ways that failures are settled—

Sabbānipetāni viyākarohi,
Please explain all these too,

Handa vākyaṁ suṇoma te”.
And we will listen to you.”

“Ekatiṁsā ye garukā,
“There are thirty-one serious ones,

Aṭṭhettha anavasesā;
And eight here are incurable;

Ye garukā te duṭṭhullā,
Those that are serious are grave,

Ye duṭṭhullā sā sīlavipatti;
Those that are grave are failures in morality;

Pārājikaṁ saṅghādiseso,
Offenses entailing expulsion, offenses entailing suspension—

‘Sīlavipattī’ti vuccati.
They are called ‘failure in morality’.

Thullaccayaṁ pācittiyā,
Serious offenses, offenses entailing confession,

Pāṭidesanīyaṁ dukkaṭaṁ;
Offenses entailing acknowledgment, offenses of wrong conduct;

Dubbhāsitaṁ yo cāyaṁ,
Offenses of wrong speech,

Akkosati hasādhippāyo;
And whoever calls another names for fun—

Ayaṁ sā ācāravipattisammatā.
This is considered failure in conduct.

Viparītadiṭṭhiṁ gaṇhanti,
Holding on to distorted views,

Asaddhammehi purakkhatā;
Preferring what is contrary to the true Dhamma;

Abbhācikkhanti sambuddhaṁ,
Misrepresenting the Awakened One,

Duppaññā mohapārutā;
Being foolish, enveloped in delusion—

Ayaṁ sā diṭṭhivipattisammatā.
This is considered failure in view.

Ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā pāpiccho icchāpakato asantaṁ abhūtaṁ uttarimanussadhammaṁ ullapati, ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā sañcarittaṁ samāpajjati, ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā ‘yo te vihāre vasati, so bhikkhu arahā’ti bhaṇati, ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā bhikkhu paṇītabhojanāni attano atthāya viññāpetvā bhuñjati, ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā bhikkhunī paṇītabhojanāni attano atthāya viññāpetvā bhuñjati, ājīvahetu ājīvakāraṇā sūpaṁ vā odanaṁ vā agilāno attano atthāya viññāpetvā bhuñjati.
When, to make a living—having bad desires, overcome by desire—one claims to have a non-existent superhuman quality; when, to make a living, one acts as a matchmaker; when, to make a living, one says, ‘The monk who stays in your dwelling is a perfected one;’ when, to make a living, a monk eats fine foods that he has requested for himself; when, to make a living, a nun eats fine foods that she herself has asked for; when, to make a living, one eats bean curry or rice that one has requested for oneself—

Ayaṁ sā ājīvavipatti sammatā.
This is considered failure in livelihood.

Ekādasa yāvatatiyakā,
There are eleven ‘after the thirds’,

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to them as they truly are:

Ukkhittānuvattikā,
A nun who takes sides with one who has been ejected,

Aṭṭha yāvatatiyakā;
Eight ‘after the thirds’;

Ariṭṭho caṇḍakāḷī ca,
Ariṭṭha, and Caṇḍakālī—

Ime te yāvatatiyakā”.
These are those ‘after the thirds’.”

3. Chedanakādi
3. To be cut down, etc.

“Kati chedanakāni?
“How many on ‘to be cut down’?

Kati bhedanakāni?
How many on ‘to be destroyed’?

Kati uddālanakāni?
How many on ‘to be stripped’?

Kati anaññapācittiyāni?
How many on ‘no other, he commits an offense entailing confession’?

Kati bhikkhusammutiyo?
How many on ‘the monks have agreed’?

Kati sāmīciyo?
How many on ‘what is proper’?

Kati paramāni?
How many on ‘at the most’?

Kati jānanti paññattā,
How many on ‘knowing’?

buddhenādiccabandhunā”.
Were laid down by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?”

“Cha chedanakāni.
“There are six on ‘to be cut down’.

Ekaṁ bhedanakaṁ.
There is one on ‘to be destroyed’.

Ekaṁ uddālanakaṁ.
There is one on ‘to be stripped’.

Cattāri anaññapācittiyāni.
There are four on ‘no other, he commits an offense entailing confession’.

Catasso bhikkhusammutiyo.
There are four on ‘the monks have agreed’.

Satta sāmīciyo.
There are seven on ‘what is proper’.

Cuddasa paramāni.
There are fourteen on ‘at the most’.

Sodasa jānanti paññattā,
There are sixteen on ‘knowing’.

buddhenādiccabandhunā”.
They were laid down by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun.”

4. Not in common, etc.

“Vīsaṁ dve satāni,
“Two hundred and twenty,

Bhikkhūnaṁ sikkhāpadāni;
Training rules for the monks;

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu,
Come up for recitation on the Observance days,

Tīṇi satāni cattāri;
Three hundred and four;

Bhikkhunīnaṁ sikkhāpadāni,
Training rules for the nuns,

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu.
Come up for recitation on the Observance days.

Chacattārīsā bhikkhūnaṁ,
Forty-six of the monks’ rules,

bhikkhunīhi asādhāraṇā;
Are not in common with the nuns;

Sataṁ tiṁsā ca bhikkhunīnaṁ,
One hundred and thirty of the nuns’ rules,

bhikkhūhi asādhāraṇā.
Are not in common with the monks.

Sataṁ sattati chacceva,
So one hundred and seventy-six in total,

ubhinnaṁ asādhāraṇā;
Are not in common;

Sataṁ sattati cattāri,
One hundred and seventy-four,

ubhinnaṁ samasikkhatā.
Are trained in equally by both.

Vīsaṁ dve satāni,
Two hundred and twenty,

Bhikkhūnaṁ sikkhāpadāni;
Training rules for the monks;

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu,
Come up for recitation on the Observance days,

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ.
Listen to them as they truly are:

Pārājikāni cattāri,
The four offenses entailing expulsion,

Saṅghādisesāni bhavanti terasa;
There are thirteen offenses entailing suspension;

Aniyatā dve honti.
There are two undetermined offenses.

Nissaggiyāni tiṁseva,
The thirty offenses entailing relinquishment,

dvenavuti ca khuddakā;
And ninety-two minor offenses;

Cattāro pāṭidesanīyā,
The four offenses entailing acknowledgment,

pañcasattati sekhiyā.
The seventy-five rules to be trained in.

Vīsaṁ dve satāni cime honti,
These are the two hundred and twenty,

There are seventeen offenses entailing suspension;

Nissaggiyāni tiṁseva,
The thirty offenses entailing relinquishment,

Sataṁ saṭṭhi cha ceva;
And one hundred and sixty-six;

Khuddakāni pavuccanti.
Are called minor offenses.

Aṭṭha pāṭidesanīyā,
The eight offenses entailing acknowledgment,

Pañcasattati sekhiyā;
The seventy-five rules to be trained in;

Tīṇi satāni cattāri cime honti,
These are the three hundred and four,

Bhikkhunīnaṁ sikkhāpadāni;
Training rules for the nuns;

Uddesaṁ āgacchanti uposathesu.
That comes up for recitation on the observance days.

Chacattārīsā bhikkhūnaṁ,
Forty-six of the monks’ rules,

bhikkhunīhi asādhāraṇā;
Are not in common with the nuns;

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ.
Listen to them as they truly are:

Cha saṅghādisesā,
Six offenses entailing suspension,

dve aniyatehi aṭṭha;
With the two undetermined offenses are eight;

Nissaggiyāni dvādasa,
Twelve offenses entailing relinquishment,

tehi te honti vīsati.
With these there are twenty.

Dvevīsati khuddakā,
Twenty-two minor offenses,

Caturo pāṭidesanīyā;
Four offenses entailing acknowledgment;

Chacattārīsā cime honti,
These are the forty-six,

Bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīhi asādhāraṇā.
That the monks do not have in common with the nuns.

Sataṁ tiṁsā ca bhikkhunīnaṁ,
One hundred and thirty of the nuns’ rules,

bhikkhūhi asādhāraṇā;
Are not in common with the monks;

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ.
Listen to them as they truly are:

Pārājikāni cattāri,
Four offenses entailing expulsion,

saṅghamhā dasa nissare;
Ten offenses where one is sent away from the Sangha;

Nissaggiyāni dvādasa,
Twelve offenses entailing relinquishment,

channavuti ca khuddakā;
And ninety-six minor offenses;

Aṭṭha pāṭidesanīyā.
Eight offenses entailing acknowledgment.

Sataṁ tiṁsā cime honti,
These are the one hundred and thirty,

Bhikkhunīnaṁ bhikkhūhi asādhāraṇā;
That the nuns do not have in common with the monks.

Sataṁ sattati chacceva,
The one hundred and seventy-six,

Ubhinnaṁ asādhāraṇā;
That are not in common;

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ.
Listen to them as they truly are:

Pārājikāni cattāri,
Four offenses entailing expulsion,

Saṅghādisesāni bhavanti soḷasa;

Sataṁ sattati chaccevime honti,
These are the hundred and seventy-six,

Ubhinnaṁ asādhāraṇā;
That the two do not have in common.

Sataṁ sattati cattāri,
One hundred and seventy-four,

Ubhinnaṁ samasikkhatā;
Are trained in equally by both;

Te suṇohi yathātathaṁ.
Listen to them as they truly are:

Pārājikāni cattāri,
Four offenses entailing expulsion,

Saṅghādisesāni bhavanti satta;
There are seven offenses entailing suspension;

Nissaggiyāni aṭṭhārasa,
Eighteen offenses entailing relinquishment,

Samasattati khuddakā;
Seventy minor offenses;

Pañcasattati sekhiyāni.
Seventy-five rules to be trained in.

Sataṁ sattati cattāri cime honti,
These are the hundred and seventy-four,

Ubhinnaṁ samasikkhatā;
That are trained in equally by both.

Aṭṭheva pārājikā ye durāsadā,
The eight offenses entailing expulsion are dangerous to approach:

Tālavatthusamūpamā.
That person is like the simile of the palm stump,

Paṇḍupalāso puthusilā,
Like a withered leaf, like an ordinary stone that has broken in half,

sīsacchinnova so naro;
Like someone with their head cut off;

Tālova matthakacchinno,
Like a palm-tree with its top cut off,

aviruḷhī bhavanti te.
They are incapable of growth.

Tevīsati saṅghādisesā,
Twenty-three offenses entailing suspension,

Dve aniyatā;
Two undetermined offenses;

Dve cattārīsa nissaggiyā,
Forty-two offenses entailing relinquishment,

Aṭṭhāsītisataṁ pācittiyā;
One hundred and eighty-eight offenses entailing confession;

Dvādasa pāṭidesanīyā.
Twelve offenses entailing acknowledgment,

Pañcasattati sekhiyā,
Seventy-five rules to be trained in.

tīhi samathehi sammanti;
They are settled through three principles for settling legal issues:

Sammukhā ca paṭiññāya,
In the presence of, and with the admission of,

tiṇavatthārakena ca.
And through covering over as if with grass.

Dve uposathā dve pavāraṇā,
There are two observance days, two invitation days,

Cattāri kammāni jinena desitā;
And four legal procedures taught by the Victor.

Pañceva uddesā caturo bhavanti,
There are five recitations, and four, not otherwise;

Anaññathā āpattikkhandhā ca bhavanti satta.
And there are seven classes of offenses.

Adhikaraṇāni cattāri,
The four kinds of legal issues,

Sattahi samathehi sammanti;
Are settled through seven principles:

Dvīhi catūhi tīhi,
Through two of them, through four, through three,

Kiccaṁ ekena sammati”.
And business is settled through one.”

5. Pārājikādiāpatti
5. The offenses entailing expulsion, etc.

“Pārājikan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
“It is said, ‘An offense entailing expulsion’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Cuto paraddho bhaṭṭho ca,
When one has fallen away, offended, and fallen down,

saddhammā hi niraṅkato;
Removed from the true Teaching,

Saṁvāsopi tahiṁ natthi,
And excluded from the community there—

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Saṅghādiseso”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing suspension’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Saṅghova deti parivāsaṁ,
Only the Sangha gives probation,

mūlāya paṭikassati;
Sends back to the beginning;

Mānattaṁ deti abbheti,
Gives the trial period, and rehabilitates—

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Aniyato”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An undetermined offense’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Aniyato na niyato,
Undetermined, not determined,

anekaṁsikataṁ padaṁ;
An undecided rule;

Tiṇṇamaññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ,
It is one of three cases—

“aniyato”ti pavuccati.
It is called, ‘An undetermined offense’.

“Thullaccayan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘A serious offense’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Ekassa mūle yo deseti,
The one who confesses to instigating another,

yo ca taṁ paṭigaṇhati;
And the one who agrees to it—

Accayo tena samo natthi,
There is no offense like that.

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Nissaggiyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing relinquishment’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Saṅghamajjhe gaṇamajjhe,
In the midst of the Sangha, in the midst of a group,

ekasseva ca ekato;
Or just one with one;

Nissajjitvāna deseti,
One relinquishes and then confesses—

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Pācittiyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing confession’.

Taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Pāteti kusalaṁ dhammaṁ,
One drops the wholesome,

Ariyamaggaṁ aparajjhati;
Misses the noble path;

Cittasammohanaṭṭhānaṁ,
Having a deluded mind—

Tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Pāṭidesanīyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing acknowledgment’.

Taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Bhikkhu aññātako santo,
An unrelated monk,

Kicchā laddhāya bhojanaṁ;
Whatever food she has obtained with difficulty;

Sāmaṁ gahetvā bhuñjeyya,
Should he receive it himself and eat it,

“Gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Nimantanāsu bhuñjantā chandāya,
When eating at an invitation,

Vosāsati tattha bhikkhuniṁ;
And a nun there gives directions based on favoritism;

Anivāretvā tahiṁ bhuñje,
If they eat there without having stopped her,

“Gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Saddhācittaṁ kulaṁ gantvā,
Going to a family that has faith,

appabhogaṁ anāḷiyaṁ;
But is poor with little wealth;

Agilāno tahiṁ bhuñje,
If one eats there without being sick,

“gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Yo ce araññe viharanto,
If anyone stays in a wilderness,

sāsaṅke sabhayānake;
That is risky and dangerous;

Aviditaṁ tahiṁ bhuñje,
And they eat there without making it known,

“gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Bhikkhunī aññātikā santā,
An unrelated nun,

Yaṁ paresaṁ mamāyitaṁ;
Whatever belongs to others—

Sappi telaṁ madhuṁ phāṇitaṁ,
Ghee, oil, honey, syrup,

Macchamaṁsaṁ atho khīraṁ;
Fish, meat, milk, and curd—

Dadhiṁ sayaṁ viññāpeyya bhikkhunī,
If she herself asks for them,

Gārayhapattā sugatassa sāsane.
She has committed a blameworthy act in the instruction of the Accomplished One.

“Dukkaṭan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense of wrong conduct’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Aparaddhaṁ viraddhañca,
Offended, and failed,

khalitaṁ yañca dukkaṭaṁ.
Faltered, and what is badly done.

Yaṁ manusso kare pāpaṁ,
Whatever people do that is bad,

āvi vā yadi vā raho;
Whether in public or in private;

“Dukkaṭan”ti pavedenti,
They declare to be wrong conduct.

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Dubbhāsitan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense of wrong speech’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Dubbhāsitaṁ durābhaṭṭhaṁ,
Wrong speech, wrong utterance,

saṅkiliṭṭhañca yaṁ padaṁ;
Whatever sentence is defiled;

Yañca viññū garahanti,
And condemned by the wise—

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Sekhiyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘To be trained in’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it really is:

Sekkhassa sikkhamānassa,
For a trainee who is training,

ujumaggānusārino.
Following the straight path,

Ādi cetaṁ caraṇañca,
This is the beginning and the right conduct,

mukhaṁ saññamasaṁvaro;
With a controlled and restrained mouth—

Sikkhā etādisī natthi,
There is no training like this.

tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

Channamativassati,
It rains on what’s concealed,

vivaṭaṁ nātivassati;
Not on what’s revealed;

Tasmā channaṁ vivaretha,
Therefore, reveal the concealed,

evaṁ taṁ nātivassati.
And it won’t be rained upon.

Gati migānaṁ pavanaṁ,
The forest is the destination of deer,

Ākāso pakkhinaṁ gati;
The air is the destination of birds;

Vibhavo gati dhammānaṁ,
Non-existence is the destination of phenomena,

Nibbānaṁ arahato gatīti.
Extinguishment is the destination of a Perfected One.”

Gāthāsaṅgaṇikaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ.

Tassuddānaṁ
This is the summary:

Sattanagaresu paññattā,
“Laid down in seven towns,

vipatti caturopi ca;
And also the four kinds of failure;

Bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīnañca,
In common, not in common,

sādhāraṇā asādhāraṇā;
Between the monks and the nuns;

Sāsanaṁ anuggahāya,
To support Buddhism,

gāthāsaṅgaṇikaṁ idanti.
There is this collection of verses.”
