Offenses by body, etc.

Kati āpattiyo kāyikā,
“How many kinds of offenses are there by body?

Kati vācasikā katā;
How many are done by speech?

Chādentassa kati āpattiyo,
How many kinds of offenses are there for concealing?

Kati saṁsaggapaccayā.
How many because of contact?

Chāpattiyo kāyikā,
There are six kinds of offenses by body,

Cha vācasikā katā;
Six are done by speech;

Chādentassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three kinds of offenses for concealing,

Pañca saṁsaggapaccayā.
Five because of contact.

Aruṇugge kati āpattiyo,
How many kinds of offenses are there at dawn?

Kati yāvatatiyakā;
How many after the third announcement?

Katettha aṭṭha vatthukā,
How many here have eight parts?

Katihi sabbasaṅgaho.
Through how many are they all included?

Dve yāvatatiyakā;

How many roots are there of the Monastic Law,

Yāni buddhena paññattā;
Which were laid down by the Buddha?

Vinayagarukā kati vuttā,
How many are said to be heavy in the Monastic Law?

Duṭṭhullacchādanā kati.
How many kinds of concealing are there of grave offenses?

Vinayassa dve mūlāni,
There are two roots of the Monastic Law,

yāni buddhena paññattā;

How many serious offenses are there in relation to meat?

Katimaṁsesu dukkaṭaṁ.
How many offenses of wrong conduct are there in relation to meat?

Gāmantare catasso āpattiyo,
There are four kinds of offenses concerning the next village,

Catasso nadipārapaccayā;
Four because of crossing a river;

Ekamaṁse thullaccayaṁ,
There is one serious offense in relation to meat,

Navamaṁsesu dukkaṭaṁ.
And nine offenses of wrong conduct.

How many kinds of offenses are there by speech at night?

Kati vācasikā divā;
How many are there by speech by day?

Dadamānassa kati āpattiyo,
How many kinds of offenses are there for one who’s giving?

Paṭiggaṇhantassa kittakā.
And how many for one who’s taking?

Dve vācasikā rattiṁ,
There are two kinds of offenses by speech at night,

Dve vācasikā divā;
Two by speech by day;

Dadamānassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three kinds of offenses for one who is giving,

Cattāro ca paṭiggahe.
And four for taking.”

2. Offenses that are clearable by confession, etc.

Kati desanāgāminiyo,
“How many kinds of offenses are clearable by confession?

Kati sappaṭikammā katā;
How many require amends to be made?

Katettha appaṭikammā vuttā,
How many here do not to require amends,

Buddhenādiccabandhunā.
According to the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

Pañca desanāgāminiyo,
Five kinds are clearable by confession,

Cha sappaṭikammā katā;
Six require amends to be made;

Ekettha appaṭikammā vuttā,
One here does not require amends,

Eko vikāle dhaññaraso,
One grain juice is allowable at the wrong time,

Pārājikā kāyikā dve,
Two offenses entailing expulsion are done by body,

dve saṁvāsakabhūmiyo;
There are two grounds for belonging to the same Buddhist sect;

Dvinnaṁ ratticchedo,
There are non-countable days for two kinds of people,

paññattā dvaṅgulā duve.
There are two rules that concern 3.5 centimeters.

Katattānaṁ vadhitvāna,
How many are there on having beaten oneself?

katihi saṅgho bhijjati;
How many kinds of people cause a schism in the Sangha?

“How many offenses entailing confession,

sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,

Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
Might one commit together,

āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time?

Pañca pācittiyāni,
There are five offenses entailing confession,

sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases;

Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
That one might commit together,

āpajjeyya ekato.
All at the same time.

Kati pācittiyāni,
How many offenses entailing confession,

sabbāni nānāvatthukāni;
All with different bases,

Apubbaṁ acarimaṁ,
Might one commit together,

Cha vohārapaccayā;
Six because of speech;

Khādantassa tisso āpattiyo,
There are three offenses for one who is eating,

Sabbā yāvatatiyakā,
Of all offenses after the third announcement,

Kati ṭhānāni gacchanti;
How many cases are there?

Katinañceva āpatti,
And for how many are there offenses?

Katinaṁ adhikaraṇena ca.
And for how many is there a legal issue?

Sabbā yāvatatiyakā,
Of all offenses after the third announcement,

Pañca ṭhānāni gacchanti;
There are five cases;

Pañcannañceva āpatti,
And there are offenses for five,

Pañcannaṁ adhikaraṇena ca.
And legal issues for five.

Katinaṁ vinicchayo hoti,
For how many are there decisions?

katinaṁ vūpasamena ca;
For how many are there resolutions?

Katinañceva anāpatti,
For how many are there non-offenses?

katihi ṭhānehi sobhati.
For how many reasons does one shine?

Pañcannaṁ vinicchayo hoti,
There are decisions for five,

pañcannaṁ vūpasamena ca;
And resolutions for five.

Pañcannañceva anāpatti,
There are non-offenses for five,

tīhi ṭhānehi sobhati.
And one shines for three reasons.

Kati kāyikā rattiṁ,
How many kinds of offenses are there by body at night?

Kati kāyikā divā;
How many are there by body by day?

Nijjhāyantassa kati āpatti,
How many kinds of offenses are there for staring?

Kati piṇḍapātapaccayā.
How many because of almsfood?

Dve kāyikā rattiṁ,
There are two kinds of offenses by body at night,

Dve kāyikā divā;
Two by body by day;

Nijjhāyantassa ekā āpatti,
There is one kind of offense for staring,

Ekā piṇḍapātapaccayā.
One because of almsfood.

Katānisaṁse sampassaṁ,
Seeing how many benefits

paresaṁ saddhāya desaye;
Should one confess out of confidence in others?

Ukkhittakā kati vuttā,
How many kinds are said to be ejected?

kati sammāvattanā.
And how many are the proper conducts?

Aṭṭhānisaṁse sampassaṁ,
Seeing eight benefits,

Paresaṁ saddhāya desaye;
One should confess out of confidence in others;

Ukkhittakā tayo vuttā,
Three kinds are said to be ejected,

Tecattālīsa sammāvattanā.
There are forty-three proper conducts.

Kati ṭhāne musāvādo,
How many cases of lying are there?

kati paramanti vuccati;
How many are called ‘at most’?

Kati pāṭidesanīyā,
How many offenses entailing acknowledgment are there?

katinaṁ desanāya ca.
And for how many is there confession?

Pañca ṭhāne musāvādo,
There are five cases of lying,

Cuddasa paramanti vuccati;
Fourteen are called ‘at most’;

Dvādasa pāṭidesanīyā,
There are twelve offenses entailing acknowledgment,

Catunnaṁ desanāya ca.
And there is confession for four.

Kataṅgiko musāvādo,
How many factors does lying have?

kati uposathaṅgāni;
And how many factors does the observance day have?

Kati dūteyyaṅgāni,
How many qualities does a qualified messenger have?

kati titthiyavattanā.
How many kinds of proper conduct are there for the monastics of other religions?

Aṭṭhaṅgiko musāvādo,
Lying has eight factors,

aṭṭha uposathaṅgāni;
The observance day has eight factors;

Aṭṭha dūteyyaṅgāni,
A qualified messenger has eight qualities,

aṭṭha titthiyavattanā.
There are eight kinds of proper conduct for monastics of other religions.

Kativācikā upasampadā,
How many statements are there for an ordination?

Katinaṁ paccuṭṭhātabbaṁ;
For how many should one get up?

Katinaṁ āsanaṁ dātabbaṁ,
To how many should one give a seat?

Bhikkhunovādako katihi.
Through how many qualities is one an instructor of the nuns?

Aṭṭhavācikā upasampadā,
There are eight statements for an ordination,

Aṭṭhannaṁ paccuṭṭhātabbaṁ;
One should get up for eight;

Aṭṭhannaṁ āsanaṁ dātabbaṁ,
Likewise give a seat to eight,

Bhikkhunovādako aṭṭhahi.
One is an instructor of the nuns through eight qualities.

Katinaṁ chejjaṁ hoti,
For how many is there a ‘cutting off’?

katinaṁ thullaccayaṁ;
For how many is there a serious offense?

Katinañceva anāpatti,
And for how many is there no offense—

sabbesaṁ ekavatthukā.
Yet all of them did the same act as basis?

Ekassa chejjaṁ hoti,
There is a ‘cutting off’ for one,

catunnaṁ thullaccayaṁ;
A serious offense for four;

Catunnañceva anāpatti,
And there is no offense for four—

sabbesaṁ ekavatthukā.
Yet all of them did the same act as basis.

Kati āghātavatthūni,
How many are the grounds for resentment?

katihi saṅgho bhijjati;
How many cause a schism in the Sangha?

Katettha paṭhamāpattikā,
How many here are immediate offenses?

ñattiyā karaṇā kati.
How many acts are there through a motion?

Nava āghātavatthūni,
There are nine grounds for resentment,

navahi saṅgho bhijjati;
Nine cause a schism in the Sangha;

Navettha paṭhamāpattikā,
There are nine immediate offenses here,

ñattiyā karaṇā nava.
There are nine acts through a motion.”

4. Avandanīyapuggalādi
4. Persons one should not pay respect to, etc.

Kati puggalā nābhivādetabbā,
“How many kinds of people should one not bow down to,

Añjalisāmicena ca;
Nor raise one’s joined palms to, nor do acts of respect toward?

Katinaṁ dukkaṭaṁ hoti,
For how many is there an offense of wrong conduct?

Kati cīvaradhāraṇā.
How many keepings of a robe are there?

Dasa puggalā nābhivādetabbā,
There are ten kinds of people one should not bow down to,

Añjalisāmicena ca;
Nor raise one’s joined palms to, nor do acts of respect toward;

Dasannaṁ dukkaṭaṁ hoti,
There is an offense of wrong conduct for ten,

Dasa cīvaradhāraṇā.
There are ten keepings of a robe.

Katinaṁ vassaṁvuṭṭhānaṁ,
To how many kinds who have completed the rainy-season residence

dātabbaṁ idha cīvaraṁ;
Should robe-cloth be given?

Katinaṁ sante dātabbaṁ,
When one exists, to how many kinds should it be given?

katinañceva na dātabbaṁ.
And to how many kinds should it not be given?

Pañcannaṁ vassaṁvuṭṭhānaṁ,
Robe-cloth should be given to five kinds

dātabbaṁ idha cīvaraṁ;
Who have completed the rainy-season residence;

Sattannaṁ sante dātabbaṁ,
When one exists, it should be give to seven kinds,

soḷasannaṁ na dātabbaṁ.
It should not be given to sixteen kinds.

Katisataṁ rattisataṁ,
Having concealing how many hundreds of offenses

āpattiyo chādayitvāna;
For a hundred days?

Kati rattiyo vasitvāna,
After spending how many days,

mucceyya pārivāsiko.
Should he be released from probation?

Dasasataṁ rattisataṁ,
Having concealing ten hundred offenses

āpattiyo chādayitvāna;
For a hundred days;

Dasa rattiyo vasitvāna,
Then, after spending ten days,

mucceyya pārivāsiko.
He should be released from probation.

Kati kammadosā vuttā,
How many kinds of flaws in legal procedures

buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were mentioned by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of Campā,

sabbeva adhammikā kati.
How many were illegitimate?

Dvādasa kammadosā vuttā,
Twelve kinds of flaws in legal procedures

buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were mentioned by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun;

Campāyaṁ vinayavatthusmiṁ,
In the Monastic Law, in the account of Campā,

How many are settled without settling?

Pucchāmi taṁ brūhi vibhaṅgakovida.
I ask you who are skilled in analysis, please say.

Yaṁ desitaṁnantajinena tādinā,
In regard to the classes of offenses taught by the unbounded Victor, the Unshakable One,

Āpattikkhandhāni vivekadassinā;
The Knower of seclusion;

Ekettha sammati vinā samathehi,
One is settled without settling,

Etaṁ te akkhāmi vibhaṅgakovida.
Skilled in analysis, I declare this to you.

How many who are destined to misery

buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were mentioned by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
We will listen to the Monastic Law from you,

vinayāni suṇoma te.
One who understands it.

Chaūnadiyaḍḍhasatā vuttā,
One hundred and forty-four

Buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were mentioned by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun;

Āpāyikā nerayikā,
Destined to misery, bound for hell,

Kappaṭṭhā saṅghabhedakā;
He who causes a schism in the Sangha remains there for an eon;

Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
Listen to the Monastic Law from me,

Vinayāni suṇohi me.
One who understands it.

How many who are not destined to misery

buddhenādiccabandhunā;
Were mentioned by the Buddha, the Kinsman of the Sun?

Vinayaṁ paṭijānantassa,
